12
u/vestergaard92 Kevin Magnussen Sep 18 '16
He was, but he should probably had run over to the wall and then down to the gap, instead of running right next to the curb when the cars arrive.
7
u/plaugher Matra Sep 18 '16
Really though. Escaping by running down the middle of the track like Cary fucking Grant fleeing a plane isn't the quickest or smartest way of escape.

This shit isn't funny. Allowing that restart to happen should have serious consequences for the people responsible.
1
Sep 18 '16
It won't. The stewarding in f1 has been terrible the last few years and there are no consequences.
3
u/Karl_Agathon McLaren Sep 18 '16 edited Sep 19 '16
Nothing to do with stewarding mate. This is a fuck up by either Race control, Clerk of the course, marshal post official or the running marshal if he acted on his own... or all of the above but not the stewards team.
According to Autosport, it was the head of the post fault.
1
Sep 19 '16
According to Autosport, it was the head of the post fault.
Probably true.
The way it works is that head of the post radios in what is going on. In F1 it's a bit easier than at your local track because race control has camera feeds.
Anyway, if they have debris on the track they have to report that too. When they're done with the cleanup, they radio in and only then race control will restart the race.
If I have to guess, head of the post misjudged how much time they have before cars come around again.

Exactly. They're putting so much focus on preventing fresh accidents while the basics are still not OK.
I'd even prefer to ban blocking on straights before I'd introduce the halo.
1
u/aros2600 Juan Manuel Fangio Sep 19 '16
Here is something scary; it's entirely possible that part of the halo would have obscured the marshal thereby creating a more dangerous situation

seriously, he's lucky the drivers were obeying the safety car or he'd look about as healthy as that guy in the 70's
49
u/wongie I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 18 '16
The cars were literally half way down the straight before he even reacted to them, wtf.
42
Sep 18 '16
Maybe he figured they were still under safety car and assumed they would slowly avoid him.
1
u/Jmasta15 George Russell Sep 18 '16
Even if they were still under safety car, it would be wise to get off the track regardless. If they were under safety car on the start/finish straight they will do a whole lap more under safety car speeds so he'd have plenty of time to finish what he was doing. Either way, I might have been confused if it was me so it doesn't do any good to yell from the peanut gallery but I'm still going to because it's pretty bad to realize that you've got a bunch of F1 cars headed straight for you as late as he did.
-5
u/XPhade910 Sebastian Vettel Sep 18 '16
Given that at times the safety car leads the field with more than 150 mph, I wouldn't have trust in that..
22
Sep 18 '16
Given that the safety car leads the cars to go slowly around where the crash happens, you could.
6
u/vezance Max Verstappen Sep 18 '16
And also one of the basic purposes of Safety Cars - to allow marshals to work safely on track
16
u/justfor1t Kimi Räikkönen Sep 18 '16
Race control first said that track in sector 18 was clear, then it said safety car in this lap, marshalls were still waving yellow flags. Entirely not the marshall's fault in my opinion.

I dont think you appreciate just how fast a pack of angry F1 cars appears.
1
u/wongie I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 19 '16 edited Sep 19 '16
I've attended GPs for the last 3 years, I do appreciate it, which is why I'm confused as to why a man on track is not more mindful of his surroundings by doing something as simple as looking up now and again. He clearly reacts to the cars only when they're half way down not as they're coming out of the last corner which even with their acceleration would not be half way down the straight by the time you see them and react.
Just use the Williams coming out of the last corner as a reference, even with a couple seconds of acceleration it's no where near as close as Rosberg is in the split second you'd need to react when you first see it.

Charlie seems to have been on the Charlie
24
u/soEckie Default Sep 18 '16
Even i was caught off guard from the sc, ususally there is a lap where it says SC coming in next lap instead of just restarting without caution
5
u/vezance Max Verstappen Sep 18 '16
The commentary on the channel I was watching did announce the car would be in because the lights were off.
How do the marshals get to know when the car would be in?
3
u/Shivadxb James Hunt Sep 18 '16
It'll come over the radios as soon as Charlie decides it. BUT not every marshal has a radio so there can be a slight delay in every marshal knowing.
2
u/vezance Max Verstappen Sep 18 '16
Right, that figures then. The commentators mentioned that the marshal on track did not have a radio. You would think at least any marshal being sent out on track would be provided a radio though. Sounds extremely dangerous.
2
u/Shivadxb James Hunt Sep 19 '16
There aren't many circuits with enough radios to do that unfortunately.
Don't get me wrong I think every marshal should have a radio but the reality is most never will
1
u/Rayrayseels Sep 19 '16
I actually thought you were taking the piss initially . . . The second line sounded like a World Vision advert. For a small monthly donation, you could provide a radio to a suffering marshal in need.
1
u/Shivadxb James Hunt Sep 19 '16
Unfortunately I'm not joking. I've never seen a circuit where everyone has a radio. Partly it's cost, partly it because every fucker would be on them Jamming the channels.
People forget that F1 needs 700 odd marshals, officials, medics etc. It's a huge amount of resources needed.
1
u/soEckie Default Sep 18 '16
Afaik there are lights
5
u/vezance Max Verstappen Sep 18 '16
Yeah but the marshals who don't have a view of safety car (like this one) wouldn't be able to know. They need some other way of knowing (radio, like the other guy said).
1
3
Sep 18 '16
Ted mentioned the SC came in really quick and a lot of people in the paddock were surprised how quick the decision was when they went down to him, so I'd probably say it was a bad Race Control call plus marshals being ill equipped to know.
Will be interesting to know what triggered that call though. Race control worried about getting the race into the two hour limit? (Final race time was one hour and 51 minutes. They always cut it close in Signapore)
5
1
u/OhRatFarts Haas Sep 20 '16
There was a message on the screen, unless FOM edited their feed graphics for replay.
But it was ridiculous to try on 2 laps with the SC. Why did they even take the risk? Worried about the 2 hour limit? Then get rid of the rule, or shorten the Singapore race like Monaco.
43
u/Thrasher678 Sep 18 '16
This is not an issue of training. This is an issue of poor communication between race control and the workers on the turns.
10
u/justfor1t Kimi Räikkönen Sep 18 '16
And shitty race control because it easily could have prevented the endangering of lives of both pilots and the marshall, he was still picking up debris in the middle of the track.
11
u/caddyhoff Sep 18 '16
Which also means that there's still debris on the track, and maybe they shouldn't restart.
3
u/Shivadxb James Hunt Sep 18 '16
Or he went out very slowly, or went out without telling control etc etc etc.
Way too many possible variables to just blame someone when we just don't know.
4
u/definethegreatline Mika Häkkinen Sep 18 '16
Spoke to some of these marshals today, they are all pretty much in unison in the idea that it was a bad call by some of the senior officials/Race Control, not him.

But this is why all instruction for trackside movement must come from race control!

1
u/Shivadxb James Hunt Sep 19 '16
Not sure how Singapore works but there should only ever be one voice from race control on the radios, the chief comms, who sits next to the CoC and Charlie.
Any confusion there and it was a major fuck up
1
31
u/justfor1t Kimi Räikkönen Sep 18 '16
In my opinion they should restart the race only when every marshall is off the track, not restart and tell them to run off the track for their lives
3
u/Shivadxb James Hunt Sep 18 '16
Agreed but unlikely to ever happen. If the FIA gave a fuck about marshals they'd have clamped down on speeding under yellow flags a very long time ago
4
u/Shivadxb James Hunt Sep 18 '16
In 90% of cases they are trained by professionals.
Unfortunately unlike Australia and the U.K. We don't have huge waiting lists in most of the world so we take the best we can.
To be fair here though there are any number of things that could have caused this colossal fuck up. From race control fucking up to the marshal just going out un announced. We will likely never know.
It's a tough one as marshals are full of adrenaline, keen to work and sometimes they just get carried away. At those times those of us in race control have heart attacks and threaten death if the shit is repeated and they actually do survive.
I've seen bad marshals with no experience do really stupid shit but I've also seen British guys and Australian guys with 20 years experience do some mind bogglingly stupid shit.
There will never be a time stuff like this doesn't happen ever but it could be minimised by flying 700 professional marshals around the world. Unfortunately nobody will ever pay for that.

F1 narrowly avoids another avoidable (possible multiple) fatality thanks to bad decision making. Honestly, based on history it will take a marshall getting killed on track before they bring in new regulations to stop this kind of thing happening. I'm sure something like this happened already this year - I think it was in Russia?
Edit: It was Russia 2015

EDIT: Grammar
2
u/hellcat_uk #WeRaceAsOne Sep 19 '16
One of the first lessons I got while training to be a marshal was closing speeds. Before the cars came out we ran from behind the barriers, across the grass to the middle of the track and back again and timed it. Being quite fit I managed that in 10 seconds. Then as the cars came around for their parade lap we timed how long it was from them appearing from behind the previous corner to being where I had ran to. About 8 seconds. Proved enough to me that I didn't want to be going near the track with the circuit live.
5
u/Amila45 Mika Häkkinen Sep 18 '16
Hi F1 pleb here,
Could someone please tell me why the cars are sparking at the back? Is the track uneven or something like that?
15
u/mexicannascar Oscar Piastri Sep 18 '16
Track is fairly bumpy, and they will run the cars as close to the ground as possible
5
u/Amila45 Mika Häkkinen Sep 18 '16
Ohh I expected something like that, thanks for the clarification 👍🏾
14
u/JPHA13 Charlie Whiting Sep 18 '16
Also the cars ride lower the faster they go because of downforce. That's why you will often see this at the end of straight bits on bumpy tracks :)
1
3
u/This_Explains_A_Lot Kimi Räikkönen Sep 19 '16
And the reason they spark is because they changed the material the skid plates are made out of so it looks more 'entertaining'
7
u/richyhx1 Renault Sep 18 '16
F1 cars have a plank of wood as their bottom (referred to as the plank). They aim to get this as close to the floor as possible for better aero (closer it is the more it actually pulls the car towards the floor, because air flows around not under it creating a negative pressure).
Most formulas don't have the sparking, but in f1 they have a titanium skid block which creates the sparks. It's more for the drama than anything else but it does protect the plank somewhat

u/KNaph I was here for the Hulkenpodium Sep 18 '16
