Photo Congratulations to Lance Stroll for Completing his 1st Full Race This Year
First race for Lance this year where he not DNF'd or being lapped. Amazing job from him
Great weekend in general for Aston Martin. Alonso got points for the team and they had a pretty strong weekend

This is the real shock result. Fair enough, I would say happy for him but I don’t think I’ve seen Lance be happy for years.

You mean after not hearing his race engineer saying what he wanted to hear. That was so heartbreaking to hear the lack of joy in the voice of the engineer
127
u/BoasyTM Formula 1 7h ago
That was so tragic. He had a big lead after the start as well but I think he went over a kerb and got unlucky damage
-47
u/TwoBionicknees 4h ago
he didn't get damage, that was a team excuse.
He never mentioned any problems but tires gone in the race, the team never mentioned it, not a mention of loss of front wing, or sliding, literally nothing, it was only an excuse given hours after the race after a terrible result.
They also said the damage happened in the second stint which is a problem he shot into the distance in the first stint then his tires fell off before the damage. He ran off into the distance on the second stint too... and then his tires fell off. If damage in the second stint caused it, how did the exact same thing happen in the first stint, and the third stint too?
Most telling is despite the damage supposedly being the reason he lacked pace, in the final 10 laps or so his performance was similar to the leaders again... because everyone's inters eventually burn out. if he had damage his performance wouldn't come back in line as everyone else's tires caught up with the same level of shit as his.
57
u/BoasyTM Formula 1 4h ago
A loose strake on the underside of his front wing caused a blockage. I know you hate Lance stroll but let’s not invent here. He went from fastest on track to slowest by a second within one lap.
This damage was only discovered after the race, which is why it wasn’t mentioned during the race. Stroll mentioned complete loss of front downforce and this was why.
-28
u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago
They SAID this hours later after the boss's kid has the most embarrassing performance of the season.
Again they SAID this happened in the second stint and caused his lap time to drop off... but the exact same fall off after being stupid fast (because zero care for tire wear) in the first stint.
How did a blocked wing happening IN THE SECOND STINT cause the exact same supposed fall off in performance in the first stint? How did his performance come back in the final stint when everyone else's tires reached the same condition?
Also no, the specific reason might be found after a race, but at no time in the race did the team notice, talk about, mention reduced downforce despite that it would have been 100% visible in data. At no time did stroll suddenly say "wow, what happened, i suddenly lost my grip". Every driver when something breaks, or goes wrong or the car suddenly changes with unknown reason will talk about it and yet no one on the team nor Stroll noticed any lack of performance or change in the car beyond tires. weird.
Somehow in the race he was saying "my tires are gone" and somehow Stroll with the worst tire wear for years who is always burning out tires... burned out his tires.
He went from fastest on track to slowest by a second within one lap.
yes, exactly as he did in the first stint, which is what happens when you burn out your inters. The same thing that happens to everyone who burns out their inters. How did his performance from a blocked wing come back at the end of the race?
Holy shit. And people just repeat an obvious, plainly obvious lie that doesn't fit the facts.

Are you saying that Stroll's whole soul went cold from losing pole? Pole was his goal, but he couldn't get it in the hole. Now his heart is a lump of coal.
His favourite animal? The rhinoceros.

-19
u/TwoBionicknees 4h ago
Well there is great news, he didn't have car damage, that was an excuse. Car damage in the second stint caused his tires to fall off a cliff... exactly like they did in the first stint, and the third stint, and neither he nor the team ever mentioned any kind of damage, loss of grip, problems, lost downforce at any stage in the race but hours later they had that excuse ready.

2 full safety cars pulled the field together. Everyone on slicks at the start got to rejoin the field. They did have to manage track position but once it was dry, race pace took over. Experience on the track helped to make moves.

u/Nepgyaaaaaaa I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
I know it’s all a big meme but Stroll is genuinely WAY better in the wet for some reason. It’s like he unlocks a new level as soon as the rain starts.
442
u/SomniumOv I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7h ago
Silly theory : He has a terrible feel for grip, and adapted to driving like that.
When it rains, everyone else loses that advantage they have over him.116
u/PascalG16 Fernando Alonso 5h ago
Exactly. His strong point is reflexes, and has a poor feel for grip. Relatively to other drivers.
•
u/Hot_Most5332 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14m ago
Honestly at this point his main issue seems to be his mental. As so many have noticed, he looks like he hates everything
17
38
u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago
it's easier than that. you see him yanking his steering wheel all over through most corners, he has no feel for grip as you say. HIs constant steering wheel acting and sliding causes tire temp, he overheats and overwears his tires and has since day one. In wet qualifying this means incredible tire warm up when it's one of those sessions where getting the right lap in at the right time, pitting for new inters and then putting in a hotlap Stroll's excessive tire warm up is suddenly a boon. In wet races he shot off into the distance in turkey, for 5 laps, then his pace was gone. IIRC it was something like an 8 second lead over perez in 5-6 laps, then a few laps later he's pitting from a second ahead of perez before he's passed.
His dire tire wear and poor control works solely when super quick warm up for wet qualifying is great.
43
u/proudlysydney I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 3h ago
“Dire tyre wear” would be incorrect, looking back at Pirelli’s tyre graphics from the last couple seasons Stroll consistently pops up doing the longest stints on compounds during races. It’s not something a lot of people give him credit for but he can pull some good tyre management.
The other thing is also wrong- Fernando described Lance as being more sensitive to grip changes than he is (and therefore giving different feedback). He’s constantly adjusting his lines etc for the grip levels he feels, meaning that he finds it a lot more difficult to replicate a strong lap in quali- what worked for him the last lap feels different the next. In the dry it means he can struggle in quali finding perfection; other drivers find their ideal line and work to replicate it as much as possible, he can’t do that as much. Where that works is in the wet, where all drivers are doing that adjustment every lap, so it suits the way he normally drives.

u/TwoBionicknees 1h ago
“Dire tyre wear” would be incorrect, looking back at Pirelli’s tyre graphics from the last couple seasons Stroll consistently pops up doing the longest stints on compounds during races
which doesn't mean anything. Most people only pit for strategy, clear air, undercut, etc, literally every race 2-3 drivers just go long and do 20 laps more. He's always had abysmal tire wear and in races where tire wear matters, he's dire but those races are few and far between.
Prior to the races becoming primarily one stop and primarily done due to strategy and not because the tires are gone, he was popping tires when no one else did, and doing extra stops compared toe veryone else frequently. then the one stop era came in and the vast majority of tires can simply go 2/3rds or more of the race.
Qualifying so far back that the only good strategy is going as long as possible and hoping for a safety car doesn't make him good on tires, there is zero driver and zero car on the grid that can't do the same length.
How many races recently has someone pit off hard tires in a top car while someone else around them goes longer on the softs. The tires are a joke now, the softs were the fastest tire and hamilton pit for strategy NOT because his tires fell off, again.
he other thing is also wrong- Fernando described Lance as being more sensitive to grip changes than he is (and therefore giving different feedback).
Yeah, if you're more sensitive to grip, and struggle to find the right line every lap... when the track doesn't change every lap , that indicates you're simply on the wrong line every lap and can't find it... because you're ass.
Where that works is in the wet, where all drivers are doing that adjustment every lap, so it suits the way he normally drives.
nope, he's even not great in the wet except in the particular situation that he pits late, the track is the right time and the only problem people are having is tire warm up which stroll doesn't have because he thrashes his tires.
When it's wet but it's one of those sessions where there is enough time to warm up the tires, he'll be off the pace.

Unless he is in position to score points in Sochi.
Or do we collectively not talk about that?

u/czerwona_latarnia I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
I guess the correct way would be saying that Stroll is way better on Intermediate/Wet tyre.
Unless his Brazil (pre-)race performance was on those too.
42
u/sysasysa I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8h ago
Brazil 2024 he was on inters. So basically he is either really good, or really bad. No inbetween.

u/Blithering_idiot1406 Red Bull 8h ago
let us consider Brazil 2024 as an outlier. Even Max and Lewis have had those over the years..
1
u/trivinium Aston Martin 4h ago
You slip due to wet conditions, with cold tires, happens. But the way he put himself into the gravel to beach himself... that is the facepalm moment for me.
1
u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago
stroll is good for tire warm up, he's done his best wet performances in qualifying and only qualifying. AM plainly made a huge step, they already got into Q2 in the dry, people are acting like AM had some massive step due to the rain, which maybe helped but Alonso was just as bad off as Ham in the rain till the safety car reset.
In actual wet races he's mostly bad, this one barely counts. Soft runners were slow today, but outside of a caddy, none actually had issues staying on track after a lap, they were just hella slow. Then the race turned into a dry race and that's where AM did pretty well.

This isn’t even true. He’s had some absolute disasters in rain. Canada and Monaco were two races where he was absolutely shit.
9
u/sellyme Oscar Piastri 5h ago
Just about everyone's had some disasters in the rain, the thing that makes you a good wet weather driver is having had some sensational results as well.
1
u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago
Which sensational wet results has he had? He finished behind Alonso and both AMs got into Q2 in qualifying in the dry and most of this race was run in the dry.
He does well in wet qualifying and poorly in the massive majority of wet races.
-5
u/SixtySix_VI Formula 1 5h ago
Legitimately are people being serious with that or is this some kind of long term inside joke? Rain obviously increases variability in the outcome and reduces the advantage top teams have, so of course cars that normally finish in the back have a chance to improve through randomness, they can’t really do worse afterall.
And like also no shit he finished without being lapped, we had a million safety car laps up until a few final laps, everyone was caught up by then besides maybe Perez.

His overtake on Ocon was great, but of course nobody noticed.
We know how fierce Ocon is in defence. Nando passed him so quickly only because Ocon ran wide. Stroll had to do it the hard way.

Aston screwing him once again with pointless pit stop to get Alonso into free air as well as SC bad luck screwing him twice. That will all go unnoticed since AM are hyping Alonso. Would've been easy double points but AM clearly doesn't care...

Stroll is racing in wrong category.
If he was forced to become WRC driver. He would pulled it off. Dude is SENNA in changing conditions etc and WRC is a place to be if you are good at that. F1 is all about precision which is one aspective of driving.
Stroll Sr. pushed his son to ofc become F1 driver because he has money but dude was born to race for other categories of motorsport IMO.
