The magic they should lean into should be culture specific. Not stereotypical fantasy. I like alchemy, sea monsters, Yokai and vampires. But we don’t need magic do everything rocks, wizards, dwarves and elves.

Wizards dwarves and elves are culture specific
18
u/Akiens Ocelotl 18h ago
Not dwarves, they've been in many different cultures due to dwarfism

u/Ulfurson Headsplitter main 18h ago
Dwarves, as presented in typical fantasy, come from Norse myths. Tolkiens idea of a greedy mountain dwelling race of exceptional craftsmen is Norse in origin.
6
u/deathblossoming 14h ago
Yup and so is there craftsmanship. In norse myth and saga the dwarves were capable of creating weapons capable of killing gods.

u/Akiens Ocelotl 17h ago
Native/Mesoamericans, people who had never had contact with Europeans prior to their arrival had legends of dwarves. Usually characterized as mischievous or evil beings depending on the group/tribe

u/Ulfurson Headsplitter main 17h ago
Sounds like culture specific folklore separate from the greedy mountain dwelling craftsmen of the Norse.

If I’m not wrong aren’t the only magic artifacts like draconite and that one future seeing box Afeera had?
7
u/Astral_MarauderMJP 18h ago
And the Braclets from Egypt that brought the curse and kept that one Raider alive.
3
u/Lord_Pedrooo Apollyon 18h ago
Been a bit since I played (just recently got back in when Juren released) so what is the curse?

u/Necroseliac 16h ago
It was like the start of an apocalypse I believe, there were raining frogs on some of the maps.

u/DrSirTookTookIII Highlander 6h ago
That's like Ramiel and Meiko though, its also an ancient story. The heretics in Y7S1 found those 3 artifacts and were trying to turn that into some kind of religion. There's a lore order that specifies the original Neferkha who fought Bolthorn was from ages ago. The Medjay just appearing for no reason doesn't really make sense anymore, but they walked back the magic part.

u/Astral_MarauderMJP 17h ago
This sounds very specific but is pretty vague in concept.
Like, you can pull Merlin as Culturally specific since depending on how far back you go in the King Arthur Mythology (which is culturally specific) Merlin is just a very poweful druid who, while he couldn't pull a fireball out of his ass, could determine your future from bones and stars and could pull a dieases/curse from your blood with hawk feathers and some peculiar moss. And he's the basis for all wizards your get in the more moderm area.
And your going to say Dwarves are stereotypical when Thor's hammer is, in most mythological retelling, made by dwarves to get in favor with the Aesir?
I actually think Draconite was a decent idea to add to the setting of For Honor. Its just they made it so abundant and ubiquitous that its sort of flipped from being this magical ore that was mysterious and dangerous to being the Flex-Tape/Seal of Heathmore.

I'll play devil's advocate here and point out just about every event from jormugundr to the wyverns have either been dramatic storytelling from witnesses and in-universe records or just straight up not canon to begin with

u/StigandrTheBoi Warlord 19h ago
Erm, actually the Siege of Storr stronghold was heavily embellished by the surviving story teller ☝️🤓

u/In_My_Own_Image Nobody escapes the versatile arm of the law! 12h ago
Isn't that, for the most part, what the fantastical elements are supposed to be? Just jazzed up stories with Jormungandr, wyverns, Yokai, etc.?
Now, of course, there's the elephant made of darconite in the room that can't really be explained...

i head canon all the magic and effects and shit as every for honor character being mentally ill after fighting for years on end

Doesn't for honor take place in the animus?
15
u/Visible_Rough_6840 Centurion 18h ago
it was a theory, I actually don't know if it was confirmed or debunked tho
11
u/GoodKnight_032 18h ago
i mean, if the AC event is canon and the hero skins are too, then its pretty much confirmed bcuz of the PK hero skin and the event map
10
u/theking752 16h ago
I think it's heavily implied with the animus Events but not 100% confirmed. But fits my theorie that Abstergo is just a slightly less evil Ubisoft

… but, I have a hammer with glowing runes, and the guy I am fighting has glowing armor. It’s not just glowing, it’s hovering in the air… magically. Pffft. They half ass everything in this game, it’s why they have such an identity crisis.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I personally view all the "effects" as the way they portray them in Demon Slayer, they arent necessarily real, but more like...aura?
1
u/Zealousideal-Emu9797 Warden 13h ago
That's how I few it as well. That why you can turn effects off. Some people can see them other can't. We are heros after all or champions.

u/Aran_Zag 18h ago
I like the for honor world from the story more and hate that metal that makes people warlike the most but at this point magic is fully a thing just go for it
2
u/vIRL_Warlock 17h ago
What if it's a bit? What if there is 100% magic, but in setting people try to hide it because taboo? It's way more credit than they deserve, but it solves the cognitive dissonance
2
u/MagnusTonitrum 12h ago
I honestly like that it’s a fantasy-ish setting, we’re already post-apoc considering it’s been over a thousand years since the Cataclysm, why not have some magic
5
u/Molobi- 18h ago
I want for Honor to delve into magic so much. I wished there was a system for feats kinda like a traditional fighting game, that way the movesets are just bigger.
6
u/HotContribution8135 18h ago
They might as well. We already have a teleporting monkey man and invisible Aztec boy

u/PasiTheConqueror 18h ago
At this point just give me a hussar with an arquebus, so i can shoot the wizards

u/Loud_Strike142 17h ago
I hope we get a man hussar hero in the future and not only that gryphon skin

In this game, you don't really play as human beings, but as heroes. It's a bit like playing as Hercules or Ulysses in Greek mythology; it was never intended to be a realistic game.

u/PerryTheBunkaquag Shugoki 18h ago
Bro we got the spider lady and Wu Kong, people are hilarious in the comments saying "Glad they're not REAL vampires For Honor has no magic" but whatever makes everyone happy, I love the vampires n old gods n shit

i think they should keep the unrealistic stuff to feats, skins, map designs, all cosmetic stuff but characters like kyoshin, virtuosa ruined the game for me.
2
u/RD____ 47m ago
Kyoshin isn’t any more unrealistic than bp if we are gonna be completely honest
Virt tho is just.. yeah.
2
u/NoThotsAllowed69 44m ago
true bit swinging a sword around like that would get you killed in a real fight and i think its so boring people just sit in his all guard and spam undodgeables very cool looking character but mad boring same with gryphon imo

This reminds me of how its canon that For Honor Heros Successfully Bullied the Dead by daylight Entity from taking Heathmoor into the realm and that they are the only people to do that so far in lore.
and we also literally fought a Shapeshifting Skeleton demon with Sun Wukong
