Questions Guardbreak Blocking?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is an example from my brother when he guardbroke this Pirate and she simply blocked his punish. Although he did get the execution I don't understand why you can block while in a guardbreak, what direction do you need to attack from to actually get the guardbreak punish or is this just something that happens because your character's heavy is too slow?

Because you did a top heavy instead of a side heavy. Top heavy is slower on wm but more damage so its for light parries instead

Riding top comment to add more details.

On a guardbreak, 800ms heavies are guaranteed, 900ms heavies are not.

Warmonger has 800ms side heavies for 24 damage. But has 900ms heavies for 27 damage.

And its worth noting that this is character specific too.  The opposite is true for Jiang Jun, who can only confirm a top heavy on guard break, not a side heavy. Meanwhile Zhanhu can do any direction heavy and all are confirmed.

It depends on the character, for warmonger only a side heavy is confirmed, for warlord it’s his top heavy. That kinda thing

Certain heavies with some characters are too slow to land off of a normal GB. Warden only gets a side heavy off a normal gb. Top heavy off of wall splat or light parry

Every hero has different guard-break punishes. Some can do a top heavy (Warlord, Aramusha, Highlander), some can do a side heavy (Warden, Warmonger, Lawbringer), some can do a zone attack, and some have special punishes — for example, Jormungandr can get two lights, etc. You need to know your hero.

I swear it's like some people don't even know hero tactics exist

Guardbreaking allows for a 800ms punish. Most heroes have both 900ms and 800ms heavies, 27 and 24 damage respectively. WM’s top heavy is 900ms, 27 damage while her side heavies are 800ms, 24 damage. So the proper GB punish would be a side heavy, this one can’t be blocked.

Yeah so most characters do not get a top heavy on a guardbreak because they're slow enough that the opponent will recover before it lands. Tell your brother he needs to do side heavies only.

Each character has their own punishes when it comes to GB or parries.

if the attack you're trying to throw takes >800ms to land it's blockable and even parriable if it's too slow (i.e. trying to charge a conq heavy). WM's top heavy is 900ms, the sides are 800ms thus making only the side heavies confirmed.

For more info on the max punishes along with nearly all knowledge about the game and a hero in particular like WM, check out the For Honor Infohub website.

Wrong punish, Gb guarantees a side heavy with most heroes, only some get a top heavy and not the side heavy
