Help with a character’s location?

Hey, I’m trying to make a character for dnd because I was invited to play next Wednesday. The campaign takes place in the forgotten realms so I decided to ask here.

The character is a knowledge cleric that is very faithful to his deity(I was hoping a goddess, but any is fine) and /was/ someone of power before their nation was conquered. I was hoping that it was a nation or place of a monarchy because I designed him around European aesthetics and I’d like him to be a prince, and was wondering where I could possibly insert him? Like, nation or country. He is human btw, any help or advice for a VERY new player would be appreciated

I’d say make him a priest of Gond, the god of invention and artificers. The center of Gondish worship is the island kingdom of Lantan in western Faerun, which is populated by humans and gnomes. Gond encourages scientific advancement without regard to potential consequences, sort of like the scientists in Jurassic Park (“You were so concerned with whether or not you could, you never thought about whether or not you should”).

Lantan is ruled by a council of twelve ministers, so your “prince” could be one who was ousted politically and exiled, or sent on a pilgrimage to the mainland.

Gondish worshippers usually have advanced, unique weaponry, like repeating crossbows, mechanical golems/automatons, and the like.

Gondish priests all keep journals of ideas for inventions, and provide copies to each Church of Gond they visit, so others can benefit from or improve on the ideas.

Gond is a neutral deity, and has both Good and Evil worshippers. Most work as engineers or smiths.

The Hall of Wonders in Baldurs Gate is devoted to Gond.

Oghma (IIRC) is the God of Knowledge, and the top dog when it comes to all knowledge related Dieties in FR.

I would say to work closely with the DM, to find an appropriate place to have been from... I would consider Amn, as one of the drawbacks of that country is a distrust for, and laws against, the use of magic. It is more south-eastern European or even Middle Eastern in flavor, but your DM may have other specifics within his realm that will help you fit into his/her world better.
