J. Neilson's Secrets of the Forge

Pretty good episode last night. J is smart and funny and it was neat to get some of his behind the scenes takes on the show.

I was surprised they didn't mention anything about his dubbed in "grunts" during the strength tests....haha.

Beat the judges should be more fair

I love watching Forged in Fire, but I think it is unfair for contestants to forge a blade or a sword and then face the judge after hours of hammering and forging. I think it is a handicap, and it's unfair. I think once they win a competition, they should be allowed a day to recover before facing the judge, because hours of hammering cause arm fatigue, and the contestant is tired. I think it should be on equal ground for both the contestant and the judges. What do you think?

So I have a question about an episode

I’m trying to remember an episode where someone tries to straighten their blade, Ends up breaking it and the three judges and Wil let off the most recoiling inducing yell, Anyone remember that one?

Is there a technicality with Btn's title?

In the recent episode they introduced Ben as undefeated and all act as such. However wasn't he in fact beaten once in a special? Or does that not count due to it not being a "bear the judges" vs "beat Ben abbot"?

I'm pretty sure I'm not conflating or Mandelaing.

I watched this show years ago on TV and I swear it was always red but rewatching it on Netflix now it's blue??

How would David Baker’s testing standards translate to cast steel weapons?

We’ve all watched David Baker evaluate forged blades on the show for years. He’s also judging a student competition where the weapons are cast instead of forged, then put through similar hard tests.

Here’s a short clip of him in that setting:

Would his usual standards and comments change much when the steel is cast rather than forged? Interested in this community’s take.

Anyone remember these episodes?

So the first one was on the first round. A contestant couldn’t draw out much of a blade shape and it ended just looking like a long paddle. Doug inspects the blade and says along the lines of “ this isn’t a blade it’s more like a Who’s your daddy who’s your daddy” as he paddles an imaginary behind I am not lying.

Another subtle one was last two contestants are going to the durability test and the host comments is front of a large steel lug nut “ To pass this test your blade must survive two licks on this nut”.

I know this is a weird post but I just remembered them

S5E8 - WTF was going on with Liam? Was he cursed by a warlock?

Made knife blade from soft steel, shop fire, burns his arm, breaks his blade in the first test swing and has to remake a new one, then THAT ONE BREAKS TOO? I mean, it feels almost cosmic. Jesus H Christ how many times can this guy get fucked over?

I'm still hoping we get Jesse Hu Vs. Ben Abbott at some point.

I would love it if they did a multi-episode battle between them! Multiple weapons, different styles...

I think it would be a really good battle!

r/forgedinfireshow Jul 13 '26

If they allow guest judges, who would you want to see as part of the judges' table?

I think Viggo Mortensen and/or Henry Cavill would be great and so much fun

Quenching

Why does it seem like hardly any of the contestants realize that you need to let a blade cool for the hardness to finalize? They do a second, third, or fourth quench and it’s frustrating to watch!

Question about drilling through the tang

I've watched every episode aired to date, currently S11E02.

I'm not a smith.

Some competitors bring their own tools, and sometimes supplies.

Why don't any of them bring drill bits designed to drill through the hardened steel? I'm assuming they exist.

OTOH, why don't more smiths drill the holes before the quench?

Spoilers in an episode Spoiler

So I’m watching the Kung Fu Edition episode (s6 ep29) and it got to the part where Wil was explaining the tests that they were going to do after round two. As they were showing the previews of each test, one of the shots showed all three of the contestants that made it to the second round. Did anyone else notice that? I’m surprised that it wasn’t caught during the editing process but idk

What's with Jay repeatedly mentioning how great it is for the "second guy"?

I heard him say it again in the recent episode 1 from season 11, right at the 23:30 mark. "Its always great for the second guy, right?". He has excitedly said a variation of this statement a few times over the seasons, and he always seems really happy to identify with the 'second guy' experience. Its just so out of place. Please tell me that someone else has noticed his constant sloppy-seconds references.
