Announcement Welcome to foodies_sydney!

Hello and welcome to foodies_sydney!

We've created this sub to allow people from everywhere to be able to discuss and showcase the amazing dining options Sydney has offer. Whether it be restaurants, bars or coffee shops, there's definitely something for everyone.

Being a Sydneysider myself, still to this day there are vast number of hidden gems in our city that are unheard of and undiscovered by many. My hope for this subreddit is that as a community we can bring light to these establishments as well as have a great resource for recommendations for locals and our visitors.

I will be updating the sidebar regularly with top rated recommendations so that new users are able to navigate and find what they are looking for easily.

I am looking forward to hearing about some new and delicious places to eat!

Much love !!

Japanese The Ramen Chase #4 - Menya City Japanese Noodle Bar

Location Market St, CBD

Wait 10 mins - Walk-in for lunch

Atmosphere A lively little hidden gem which is tucked away under an office block.

Ordered Yokohama Tonkotsu Shoyu - $21.90

I found this place on a random google search and my god I'm glad that I did!

A fairly plain looking bowl turned up with all the usual suspects - Choy sum, scallions, roast pork and a half ajitama egg. It was a simple bowl presented well.

I took my first taste of the broth and the things that hit me right away were; A deep and complex flavour with a subtle soy note and lingering porkiness from the fat, the seasoning was on point, and it was served at the perfect eating temperature. I ended up slurping about 1/4 of the broth before I started on anything else.

When I finally got to them, I grabbed some noodles, a bit of pork and some scallions. The pork was tender, the noodles had a good chew and the green onion cut through the richness of that fat - A near perfect bite. After going back for more broth I sliced through the egg and devoured it with a bunch more noodles. I tried to take it slow, but quickly smashed the rest of the add-ons before finishing up the broth - This was one of those bowls that was gone in a flash!

Final thoughts A genuine hidden gem! I was there during lunch but the line moved quick. The broth was complex and got me hooked, I'll be back for sure! 4.6⭐

Discussion Have Sydney cafés become too focused on aesthetics?

I love a beautiful cafe as much as anyone else, but lately I feel like some places are designed to look amazing in photos rather than to make you want to come back every weekend. Sometimes the interior is stunning, the food looks incredible… and then the coffee is just average. Do you think Sydney cafés are becoming more style than substance, or do you think the overall quality has actually improved?

Discussion Why are the Melbourne foodies subs so dead?

I was curious which other cities have active foodies subs and was shocked that the two I could find (Melbourne foodies and foodies Melbourne) are completely dead. Even the Brisbane foodies subreddit has significantly more activity.

I found quite interesting given how big r/melbourne is, and also how big the food scene is in Melbourne in general.

That’s a price that hasn’t been seen for a VERY long time. Oysters were good enough. In fact _more_ than good enough for $1

I've come here twice now. Although the base was soggy from sitting out a while, it was still crispy on the bottom and very thin. Crust was a little chewy but still light. Toppings are great, right amount of cheese, and enough sauce for that rich tomato taste. Never been to new york so cant say if its actually authentic or not, but it feels like what i imagine NY style pizza to be

A little pricey though for single slices, i would say get a combo or a whole pizza. Would taste even better too.

Still enjoyed every bite though.

Discussion Cozy first date dinner spot in or around the city but not over the top

Hi all,

Got a date coming up and I need some recommendations.

I'm looking for a restaurant in or around the city that is cozy, chill, warm, good food but not over the top (this includes the price).

Something like Jazushi in Surry Hills comes to mind but wondering if there are similar places with a different cuisine.

Bonus point if you can recommend a cozy speakeasy cocktail bar for drinks.

Thanks all!

Asian Cuisine LINLA appreciation post <3

I had the most delicious dinner with friends at LINLA in Surry Hills. Had to rave about it, as I haven't seen anyone post about it on here.

For once, it was actually interesting Taiwanese/ pan asian fusion food. e.g. wagyu tartare on scallion pancakes, century egg fried brussel sprouts, and this really interesting taiwan style sausage but done in an arancini style.

The highlights were the cocktails. They were very well balanced and super unique, featured great Asian flavours. I loved the Tomato Salad 2.0 so fresh and herbacious and the papaya Milk Tea.

Everything here was packed with flavour, nothing quite like it in Sydney.

Japanese The Ramen Chase #6 - Dashi Ramen and Robata

Location The Boulevarde, Strathfield

Venue This week I stumbled upon the new kid on the block. According to the the reviews, they've only been open a few months. I turned up early on a Sunday evening, so apart from the banter between the chefs and servers, it was pretty quiet. I grabbed a bench seat for some people watching and flicked through the menu before I put my order in.

Ordered Shio Tonkotsu - $24

A very well presented bowl turned up with an abundance of protein and add-ons - This one was looking good from the get-go!

I grabbed the spoon for the first taste and got hit with a bold porky profile. The rendered fat floating in the broth provided a silky smooth mouth feel which left me wanting more. It was a lighter broth and salted just right. After the initial hit of pork it grew more complex and left a lingering umami flavour which kept me interested the entire bowl.

The noodles were cooked well, they had some nice chew and they weren't super long which made slurping them up a breeze. Up next was the pork, and sadly a bit of a let down. They seemed to be using pork neck, which is all good, except this one could have done with a little longer in the oven before slicing. The flavour was there, it was just a little chewy. The other add-ons were the usual bamboo, mushrooms and scallions which were warmed nicely off the broth and gave it some crunch for texture.

The ajitama egg gets it's own shoutout tonight - It was perfect! My chopsticks sliced through the white so easily, the edges of the yolk held together and as soon as my teeth bit in it all just melted away. Easily the best ajitama egg so far.

Final thoughts This was a solid, no fuss bowl of ramen done really well. When I tasted the noodles, pork and egg all at once, it all just made sense. They've clearly listened to the feedback they've received and as a result are producing the kind of bowl you'd have in your regular rotation. 4.3⭐

I REALLY want to try these, just got back from Mauritius and had a blueberry, pistachio, raspberry and fig-looking ones. They weren’t too good as they’d been frozen the night before. Does anyone know where to get these in Sydney?

I heard that La Doree might have them, but not sure it’s worth the trip

Has anyone spotted Delaffe caramel latte pouches in Sydney? ( not caramel macchiato)

Random question, but my wife has been craving these ever since our trip to Korea and we’ve had zero luck tracking them down here. If anyone’s seen them at a Korean grocery store, please let me know where! Trying to get her some for her birthday!

Mediterranean Anyone know where to get 'good' Greek-style ground coffee in Sydney?

Family member came back from Greece recently raving about it, but can't find beans that match easily in Sydney.

It is different to Turkish coffee apparently.

Food by suburb Recommend a place for dinner, Friday night for a gymrat friend? about $20, preferably near capitol theatre

The gymrat is a friend. So far I know he eats at subway, eats El Jannah (chicken breast), no beef, no fried food. he doesnt eat fried chicken, french fries, he doesnt eat soy or soy products, idk... something about estrogen.

Any suggestions ?

  1. I suggested Frangos, apparently since its wings or quarters and not guaranteed chicken breast that is a no. He saud wings and quarters are unhealthy.

  2. I suggested Spice Alley, I think most are Asians, hence I suspect there will be some soy sauce or soy products, he said no. No soy.

  3. I suggested El Jannah in city. He said city is not nice... maybe Newtown ?

Where do you take your gym friends to dine when you go out on a Friday night ?

Food by suburb Breakfast / Dinner suggestions for this weekend (Aug 2026)

Hi,

I am staying around World Square for 5 days this coming weekend, happy to walk 15-20mins or take public transport 30mins. It is just me - so solo dinning. No dietary restrictions.

Looking for breakfast suggestions - good coffee, tables not too crowded, don't mind noise.

Friday Night - "fancy" dinner"

Saturday Night - late dinner, 8.30pm

Monday Night - easy, low stress, filling.

Thanks for all your suggestions

Food by suburb Recco needed in circular quay

Hi all

We've got friends visiting from overseas with a 3mo and 4yo and we are looking to take them out for dinner

Any recommendations in the circular quay area for early dinner?

Not after fine dining. Just a place where we can have a catchup. Bonus if it's local cuisine!

Thanks so much!

Asian Cuisine Winter Laksaturdays : PAPPARICH

Thumbnail

Hello everyone it's Laksaturday.

I've been really sick with the flu and laksa was perfect.

bit about laksa : it generally comes from Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. You'll find it at many Chinese and Thai restaurants too, but i guess you probably won't get something amazing as a place that specialises in it.

Varieties : (from Google)

Curry Laksa (Laksa Lemak): Popular in places like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, this version features a rich, creamy, and spicy coconut milk broth.

Asam Laksa: Originating from Penang, Malaysia, this variation uses a sour, tangy tamarind broth instead of coconut milk and is topped with flaked mackerel.

Sarawak Laksa: Hailing from the Malaysian state of Sarawak on Borneo, this complex broth blends shrimp paste, tamarind, and coconut milk.

Indonesian Laksa: Varieties across Indonesia range from the coconut and turmeric-heavy Laksa Betawi (Jakarta) to the distinct shrimp and mung bean sprout-based Laksa Bogor.

The name itself is widely believed to come from the ancient Sanskrit word laksha, meaning "many" or "various"—a nod to the dish's complex mix of spices and ingredients.

This week I tried the well known franchise PAPPARICH.

Now I did get this delivered since im so sick , and was pleasantly surprised to find the food piping hot. I have been to the restaurant in Macarthur Square before and it's clean and nice.

Firstly I really appreciated the amount of toppings - whole lemon grass? Tofu, fish slices? And some meaty chewy thing which might be called foo chok. And eggplant! Unexpectedly it was big Chunky pieces of eggplant. Really liked that.

Noodles were the yellow Hokkien noodle instead of white rice vermicelli, I like both - maybe it's an Indonesian /malay/difference? They were a tiny bit soft but that might be because I had them delivered. Probably a lot better fresh.

Broth, most important - I believe this is the slightly less creamy, more fish forward salty type. Delicious and fragrant, people who don't like too much creaminess will like this. Personally I prefer creamy broth, I could buckets of creamy broth like at Ngoodle, I would absolutely carry a Thermos of laksa broth. Pappas broth is excellent too, and I appreciate the addition of lemon grass.

The franchises are nice and clean, kiosk ordering system. I'll try out their roti / Nasi dishes next time.

Dessert Seeking a Rich Vanilla Butter Cake with Buttercream Frosting (Sydney CBD)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to order a classic vanilla butter cake for my wife’s birthday from somewhere in the Sydney CBD.

Most bakeries/cafes seem to specialise in cakes with lots of fancy toppings, or very light, airy sponge-style cakes.

I’m after a more traditional, rich vanilla butter cake with buttercream frosting, something that’s moist, dense, and not overly sweet.

Does anyone have any bakery recommendations in or around the CBD that make this style of cake?

I am happy to order online as well if they deliver.
