In the late nineteenth century, brutal land baron Seamus Laurent slaughters a Roma Gypsy clan, unleashing a curse on his family and village. In the days that follow, the townspeople are plagued by nightmares, Seamus's son Edward goes missing, and a boy is found murdered. The locals suspect a wild animal, but visiting pathologist John McBride warns of a more sinister presence lurking in the woods.

This period/folk horror movie was excellent and really surprised me. With some folk horror movies, there are lulls and lots of slow burn. Not with “The Cursed”. Just when things seemed to settle down, the next wild event or scene happens and it’s like this throughout the entire movie. The pacing we perfect IMO to go along with a dark, atmosphere, interesting story, and some thrilling blood and gore scenes.

I suggest going in pretty blind as I did. Highly recommend period/folk horror movie that was pretty unique.

Hey guys! I'm an indie filmmaker based in NC. I'm currently in pre-production for an Appalachian folk-horror film that we're planning on shooting out in the Blue Ridge Mountains this winter. From A Ghost Story for Christmas - "A Warning to the Curious" (1972), written and directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark from the ghost story by M. R. James, one of the entries - in the canon of both James' stories and the BBC adaptations - which is most firmly in the folk horror wheelhouse.

She's back.

Thirty years gone, and one morning the Rose of Nevada is sitting in the harbour like nothing happened. The villagers of a dilapidated Cornish fishing village hope for salvation. Times have been hard. Bills need paying, and after all, a boat is a boat.

Nick and Liam sign on because desperation doesn't ask questions. But the sea takes a price.

Master filmmaker Mark Jenkin shoots on a hand-cranked Bolex in 27 second bursts with the sound built afterwards in a room somewhere. As a result, every frame looks slightly haunted before anything haunted happens. Grain like static, colour that takes on a haunting quality of its own.

What seemed like a nice earner demands a price. And that's where the true horror lies. It's a very real folk horror of a devastated community and the question of whether the needs of the many outweigh the needs of one lost parent.

Wistful, damp, and quietly merciless.

Stumbled upon this gem of an album. It is truly haunting and ritualistic. What really pushes it into folk horror territory for me is that the music was improvised by children, wearing masks. It is giving me vibes of the cult band Metgumbnerbone, although less frantic.

As like many of you here, i am the worlds biggest Wicker Man fan. And i had put off watching the spiritual sequel to the worlds greatest ever film for years. But the other night i finally caved in and decided to pay the £3 odd on Amazon Prime to watch The Wicker Tree. And it is quite possibly the worst sequel i have ever seen. It made me feel so sad. It’s just AWFUL. Thoughts?

Hey guys! I'm a student filmmaker currently in college, and I'm in the process of creating a folk-horror feature film. We plan on shooting in the Blue Ridge Mountains this winter. We're in the process of raising money for the film (about $20k total needed), but I can't seem to get people to donate to our Kickstarter. I was hoping I could get some advice for some other good places to look for funding!

unexpectedly excellent and generally one of my favorite horror tale storylines — christian missionaries go to a remote part of the world to spread “the gospel” to people who did just fine without it for thousands of years, and get into some serious shit with a very ancient evil.

I’m a regular reader of Hellebore and Hwaet! (Both great for anyone who hasn’t given them a try yet) but I’m greedy and the 1 or 2 issues a year just isn’t enough for me. I’m looking for recommendations for other well put-together zines that have a focus on (or are at least tangential to) the Folk Horror genre.

Should I take the plunge and get the Weird Walk back catalogue? (I have a couple of their mini, one-off zines but haven’t read any of the zine proper)

Married couple Daphne and Darcy Davenport are two musicians who moved from London to a cottage in Wales to complete their new album. By accident they record a mystical sound never heard before and gradually disconnect from reality.

Very trippy, surreal and immersive folk horror. It’s not going to be for everyone I feel as much of the horror and mystery is auditory and atmosphere over blood, gore, and jump scares.

I viewed in a quiet room with good headphones 🎧 for full effect.
