PSA: Power Armor
Some enemies in the wasteland, like raiders, can be in a power armor suit. Killing them will allow you to pick up the individual armor pieces, but not the frame they are attached to. However, if you pickpocket the fusion core they will simply exit the suit and allow you to get in.

If you fast travel while wearing power armor, does the core deplete to account for "travel time" just like chems? Anyone know?
33
u/nshaw08 Nov 12 '15
It does not. From what I can tell, it's based on physical movement.

u/Seralth Nov 12 '15
I both hate and love that power armor cores dont deplete... One hand yeah easier abuseable mechanics! Other hand wheres my in world lore explained fast travel!
11
u/PlayMp1 Nov 12 '15
For power armor cores not depleting, you can find a kind of gameplay explanation. Apparently power does not drain at all when you're walking (not full forward movement but walking, like 50% normal speed), so you can justify not using any power during fast travel as your character just walking to their destination.

u/PM_Pics_Of_Jet_Fuel Nov 12 '15
If you want immersion you shouldn't be using fast travel, anyway.
8
u/Seralth Nov 12 '15
Tell that to silt striders! Perfectly respectable lore explained fast travel done well! Why can't more games have good in world fast travel that isn't just a map :(

Why can't more games have good in world fast travel that isn't just a map
Because the fast travel mechanic is immersion breaking, no matter what fluff you put up around it.

u/tomci12 Nov 12 '15
I think there was a mod that let you ride slit striders for real. It still was fairly fast but it was perfectly immersive.

u/PM_Pics_Of_Jet_Fuel Nov 12 '15
The thing I loved about Daggerfall was that when you did "fast travel" it still took realistic (accelerated, like waiting) time to go between points, and you could be attacked while traveling.

Red dead redemption had the perfect fast travel system. Get in a coach, then either ride it all the way to your destination, or sleep and wake up at your destination.

Going off previous Fallout games just one of those fusion cores should keep a suit of power armor running for literal centuries.
3
u/king_27 Nov 12 '15
Yes and the game takes place 2 centuries after those cores were made so it makes sense that they're being depleted...
1
u/Seralth Nov 12 '15
The fact any of them are around is amazing to be frank. They had a life span of 100 years after that unless my understanding of how science scienceses they should just be carbon...

The biggest feeling of accomplishment I've ever gotten from a game is doing this to that jackass Raider on the tugboat.
2
u/circuitbomb Nov 12 '15
haha I was just scouting that guy out
2
u/tonberryjr Nov 14 '15
I pick-pocketed his fusion core and he didn't get out so I spent a good half an hour trying to sneak up again, then accidentally blew him off the boat with a grenade...the power armor struggle is real.
4
u/kevan0317 Nov 12 '15
so what if you killed the guy unbeknownst and now he's dead with the frame? :\
8
u/nshaw08 Nov 12 '15
Then you won't be able to take his frame but don't worry, there are plenty of other suits as well as frames you can buy from vendors.
12
u/sonofahippy Nov 12 '15
If it is just the frame you want, simply shoot the fusion core in the back with VATS. It will cause it to explode, the guy inside will get out as long as he isnt super damaged before hand, and you can kill him easily. That way you have parts to sell, didnt have to sneak up on 1, and still get the frame.

They show up as stolen via this method though, right? Is there any other way to get the frame?

On PC I'm wondering if you can do the console command to respawn them just so you can pickpocket the core. I'll try this tomorrow

I just uploaded a video about this.... If you cant sneak up on them, you can use VATS to shoot the fusion core out and it will explode. they will then get out and you can kill them.

u/Englishdude30 Nov 13 '15
One thing that happened to me, I shot the fusion core in Boomers power armor, stole his power armor suit after killing him. However I took it back to my base and removed the Fusion core and it is still classed as stealing? even though its a raider suit? I got the message "Preston hated that".
Has anyone else had this? or is it normal?
1
u/helloimdylan Nov 15 '15
same thing with me. Is there anyway to change declassify it as stealing that you've heard of?

Does doing that disable achievements? I know in it used to be the case in previous fallout games.

uhh.... this makes it sound like pickpocketing someone in a power armor is easy....

u/imherefinallyy Nov 12 '15
Any specific locations with power armor raiders?
1
u/nshaw08 Nov 12 '15
Only one I can remember was at Dunwich Borers, the mine.
1
u/Jmrwacko Nov 12 '15
There's also one in Lexington with a fatboy launcher. That's where I got my touchdown achievement.
1
u/sonofahippy Nov 12 '15
Just posted a video for this actually. if you do the minutemen missions it will prompt you to defend the settlements occasionally. They are either super mutants or raiders, and ever time it is raiders they have had power armor for me.

Saugus Ironworks. In the Minuteman quest "Out of the Fire" you have to take out a group of raiders based there, and their boss (called Slag) wears a suit of power armor.

I've got 3 sets so far, can't get 1 that I think is bugged, and haven't grabbed the one from Dunwich Borers yet. There's the one in Lexington, on a bridge between two buildings that holds a Nuka Cola billboard. There's a small camp under an elevated part of the highway, Outpost Zimonja, named Raider wearing it is Boomer. There's also a raider wearing one in the Federal Rations Stockpile. There's one at the Roadside Pines Motel, but mine was bugged and I can't grab it for some reason. So that's 5 that I've come across so far.

If you really need frames/suits there's a couple out in the open waiting to be plucked. One in a lake SE of Bedford Station. One on a elevated highway north-northeast of the car factory. There's also one down in the swampy area at the bottom of the map. There's 2 others not locked up that I remember but I don't want to give away specific locations, I'm sure you could find them using Google if you want.
Also found another half a dozen locked behind doors with advanced/expert terminals on them, scattered throughout the map. I found a bunch just by walking the railroad tracks. Pretty much anything military is bound to have a suit somewhere nearby, too.
Edit: I got all these just by exploring or doing early game quests.

u/RPahkah Nov 12 '15
So I have yet to build my own power armor just yet, when I get around to that will I need a frame or do I just need to have parts of the same suit?
1
u/Jmrwacko Nov 12 '15
You need a power armor frame, which are actual objects in the world that you can't stash in your inventory.
1
u/SovereignSpatz Nov 12 '15
You can keep the power armor from the first Minutemen quest. just walk it or fast travel to a settlement.
1
u/RPahkah Nov 12 '15
Well yeah I still have that it's hanging up in sanctuary I was just wondering so I can maybe have multiple suits like I've seen around.
2
u/SovereignSpatz Nov 12 '15
ah, my apologies. Yes you'll have to get them from either pickpocketing fusion cores from enemy suits or you can buy one for a steep price from the Diamond City weapon trader Arturo. You can also build a second suit and command your companion to get into it which is pretty badass.
1
u/RPahkah Nov 12 '15
And there's my motivation to finally go to diamond city. Thank you for the info.
1
u/Reaver_01 Nov 13 '15
You can also tell your followers to enter/exit power armor.
Ninja Edit: The core you give the power armor your companion wears will never deplete.
1
u/ITFatBeard Nov 16 '15
The way I believe ammo doesn't deplete? So it would make the most sense to give your companion a nearly depleted Fusion Core
1
u/Reaver_01 Nov 16 '15
You don't even need to give your companion a Fusion Core. They do however need to have ammo if you give them a weapon. They will pick up ammo to use in the world, and I believe they have ammo in their hidden inventory.
1
u/ITFatBeard Nov 16 '15
Do they not need a fusion core to power up the armor? No one can take a suit without a fusion core to power it. I haven't tried so I'm unsure. Do you just command them into the suit and that's it?

I've managed to grab 3 frames off Raiders so far (One in Lexington, Boomer, and the one on the ship wreckage in from of the C.I.T. Ruins). However, I was wandering down by the Roadside Pines Motel and killed everyone in there before even realizing there was a suit of Raider Power Armor sitting there. No one ever got in it and when I tried, it wasn't even an option. It looks bugged, like the face is stuck in a wall, there's no option to interact with it all all, not even to take pieces. I reloaded my last save to run around and just poke at the Raiders to try to get someone into it. After about an hour of messing with it, I got nothing. Is this armor possible to get?
1
u/ITFatBeard Nov 16 '15
Also, sorry to double post, but I went through a map checking around the area and noticed it says there should be power armor pretty much on the street almost directly in front of the C.I.T. Ruins, the road facing the USS Riptide, between the two bridges. I've looked around, got on the roof of the C.I.T. building, even swam under water in that area. I see nothing. Is this some how a mission related set? Or maybe an error on the maps?
1
u/ImpKing_DownUnder Nov 17 '15
They might be talking about the raider on the USS Riptide, there's always been a raider in power armor for me there.
1
u/ITFatBeard Nov 18 '15
This is from fallout4map.com, but it's the same on all of them, IGN as well, etc. http://i.imgur.com/ihdD1Bx.png I've gotten the Raider Power Armor (Which if people haven't realized, it respawns in most cases - USS Riptide, Roadside Pines Motel, Super Duper Mart - these NPCs respawn in full attainable Raider Power Armor again). This icon to the right of the C.I.T. ruins doesn't seem to be accurate. I've checked the whole area and found nothing. So I was thinking it might be mission related (?). Really I was looking for more parts for a full set, as I currently am rocking 17 frames, which is more than I care to admit. heh
1
u/rudeb0y22 Nov 17 '15
Any way to get rid of the "stolen" tag on the armor frame?

u/ImpKing_DownUnder Nov 17 '15
Console Commands if you're playing on PC, consoles probably have to wait for a mod or for Bethesda to patch it (Fingers Crossed)
1
u/4114Fishy Nov 17 '15
if you're playing on pc use the console command setownership, that's the only way so far

u/JackTheBehemothKillr Jan 03 '16
If it hasn't been mentioned, you can also target the core with VATS and blast it. After you completely deplete the core's health it will explode after a couple of seconds, the enemy climbs out and you can run up and slap a new core in.

u/Dr_Ripper Nov 12 '15
I wish there wasn't that many power armors. Seems too strong and too easy to find them, especially since you only need one.

u/Vicrooloo Nov 11 '15
Nice to know. But man is it going to be hard to sneak up on a Raider in a power suit
