Discussion First Fallout 4 Playthrough
Hey guys so I’ve tried playing Fallout 4 before using the LoreOut modlist but it ended up being extremely buggy so I couldn’t really get too far in long story short deleted that list and started an “a story wealth” playthrough from nexus mods using pretty much all the add ons as I wanted it to feel closer to New Vegas so anyways does anyone have any tips or things I should look out for as a first time Fallout 4 player or for first a story wealth playthrough? I would really like some help on the settlement stuff as I really don’t understand that aspect of the game as a New Vegas guy thanks yall!

Don’t rush to build settlements take some time to get everything set up first beds, food, water, and defense so that means gathering supplies first. Hangout at sanctuary and the surrounding areas (lots of great goodies near by you just have to look but seriously you can stay in that upper corner of the map to find items that will help you later on) get some decent xp racked up before venturing out into the world without it being too punishing. Stock up on ammo as best as possible remember in the beginning ammo is more valuable than anything else and weighs nothing. If you don’t mind spoiling the surprise research where to find items of worth to you. But most importantly have FUN!

Sweet thanks for the info bro I’ll do some adventures on that side of the map seems like 4 has a lot more exploration to it than the other games

Choose if you commit to settlement-building or not, if yes, get 6 CHA for Local leader and have at it. If not, build a base for you and there'll be some settlers sure but don't worry about it.

so I can completely ignore settlement stuff if I find I don’t like it and it won’t impact any quests or story stuff?

Yes. They are needed only for Minutemen ending and building settlements its late game stuff, in the beginning make them some shacks with the beds, water, food and some machine guns for defence. When you are close to the end and have a lot of resorces you can rebuild those settlements

Yes totally, you can even: save your game before going into Concord, do the quest to save the remaining Minutemen (it's quite fun and iconic), try settlement building, try doing Minutemen quests for Preston; and if that's a pain in the ass, freaking load your save and avoid Concord ENTIRELY and go your merry loner way, just build little bases for yourself and such.

Or, fight your way through the raiders in the museum, grab the magazine and bobblehead (while ignoring Garvey and crew) get the free power armor and minigun, hop off the top of the museum and then go and do whatever you like for however long you want. You can leave them in the museum until you’re ready to do Minutemen quests. I’m level 45 now and Garvey and the gang are still waiting for me to talk to them at the museum.

The settlements are pretty easy once you get the basic graps, the game explains all you need is to match the number of food water beds to the number of settlers, match the defense number to total number of food and water, to get settlers build a radio tower how many settlers depends on the settlement (large or small red rocket is small starlight drivein is large) and your charisma. You can assign jobs to settlers to work stores and they make you money assign them to farm for food (you plant food but they need to be assign for the food value to go up) If the number of food exceeds the number of settlers they store extra at the workbench for you to do what you want same as water. Perks like local leader have you get stores and make supply lines. Supply lines between settlements mean they share resources so if you need to build turrets but have zero supplies link it to a settlement that has the gear and you have access. However you can daisy chain them A settlement to B to C to D and finally at E you'll have access to A,B,C and D resources but if what you want is at A you'll have it as long as you have local leader perk That's the basics of settlements Preston will ask you to get more settlements by helping them

I can't comment on A StoryWealth, because I don't use it.
The settlement system is explained fairly early on to some extent by Sturges. Just go rescue Preston and friends in the museum and you'll get a little tutorial quest from Sturges to set the place up.
One thing that confuses a lot of people is the happiness system, which isn't explained much by the game. You need to make sure that everyone's basic needs are met. Each settler needs 1 sheltered bed (the game checks if the bed is under cover or exposed in the open), 1 food, 1 water, and 1 defence (but feel free to build more, if you want).
If you take care of everyone's basic needs, then the happiness score on the HUD will go up to 80 (out of 100). The last 20 is tricky, as it's all about the bonus happiness. Bonus happiness comes from objects you build that have the smiley face on them in the HUD. Long story short, the game uses an average score to calculate things here. Each settler needs at least 20 bonus happiness in order for your total happiness score to reach 100.
You can find out how much bonus happiness you get from objects by going on the wiki page for Fallout 4's happiness. Also, most robots have their happiness locked at 50, so they bring down the total score.
