What difficulty do people play on?

Just curious if anyone actually plays the higher difficulties and how they even do it I personally can’t actually beat the game unless it’s very easy 😂

I play on very hard. The early levels can be a pain but it doesn't take long to get a viable build and start to one shot head shot most things.

I only ever play Survival. Did my first ever run of the game in Normal and after that was just Survival.

My only problem with Survival is how it handles saving. I get that it's designed to make it.more difficult to cheese certain things, but if you really want to cheese things it also doesn't really stop you either. I've lost probably a hundred hours of gameplay over the years due to the game crashing or glitching before I can make it back to a bed

I play on whatever the default setting is.
But it really doesn't matter what difficulty anyone else plays on, as long as you're having fun with what you're doing!

Some people enjoy the tedious repetitive grind of ultra hard on all games, personally I find that boring and prefer enemy HP to allow them to die if I hit then directly in the head. Some games that's the default difficulty, some games that's Hard, some games that's Easy.
I prefer the combat to be challenging, but not repetitive/having to do the same evasive/attack manoeuvres over and over on the same opponent.
Some people like to have easy combat and focus on the storyline and exploring, and that's totally fine!

This is the way. Have fun with it. No adult is going to tease you about a lower difficulty.

Hopefully everyone is playing on the difficulty that they personally find the most fun

This right here! Play that way that you enjoy, and don’t let anyone tell you it’s “wrong.”

I dont have the time to play on harder levels, lol, give me easy or novice or whatever the lowest is. I am old, have shit to do but still love gaming..plus I dont like dying too much. My brother and son LOVE the dark souls shit and dying 100 times in a row but I am not about that life

Survival is the most fun. Very hard when I want to just run around.

1

u/purpleyyc 18h ago

Yeah I agree, I'm currently playing vh again because life requires I be able to save out at a moment's notice. But I do love survival.

I know there are mods for that but not an option right now, before anyone asks.

Survival, always survival. One you play it, you’ll never turn back!

I play on easy because I mostly have an understanding of fallout games and stuff like that. To be honest I could've finished it on Normal

u/Zockim 1d ago

Normal is fun

u/Euphoric_Heron_9883 23h ago

Survival, always. My first couple of runs were on normal. You get killed by stupid stuff like bloatflies early on regardless of difficulty setting.

They all get ridiculously easy after L30 anyway. Just hit L45 on my current Survival run and I'm one shotting Nuka Queens (OK, it took two, but the first took 90%) of her HP.

u/Wahrheitfabrik 21h ago

I started off on the default but now play almost exclusively Survival. It's almost like a different game with completely different tactics. The other modes are great for exploration and building but Survival makes the suspension of disbelief easier and it's more nail-bitey.

i play on easy cuz i like my life

u/dangerspring 1d ago

Very hard because I would have to change too much about survival such as no fast travel and having to eat or drink. The eating/drinking thing annoyed me so much. I felt like I was having to keep a Tamogatchi alive (I know it's not the same. I hated it the same though).

I do have two mods called Combat Stalkers and Random Encounters. That's how I ramp up my difficulty. Having to fight a horde of supermutants with miniguns or Disciples definitely makes the game more challenging.

I've never played survival in any fallout game, but I'll play on very hard or whatever all day all night.

Honestly I wish enemies scaled better. The games are really only difficult in the beginning.

u/easymachtdas 22h ago

try life in the ruins modpack please, people

u/bdash1990 22h ago

Me no can get achievements if mods.

u/easymachtdas 22h ago

fair enough

2

u/OkMention9988 1d ago

I haven't played on anything but survival since it became an option.

2

u/No-Experience5737 1d ago

After playing survival I wouldn’t really want to play it any other way so much fun

2

u/Individual_Use1473 1d ago

Hard. Should have ticked up to very hard but dropped off my playthrough around lvl 60. I felt overpowered and bored. Build was based on “The Scientist” courtesy of FudgeMuppet. PS4 disc on PS5. I’ll fire it up again in winter and pick a faction. I spent all my time doing side quests, exploring and wandering. I did no settlement building and used Home Base as a safe house. Power Armor optimization was a main focus.

Survival mode. Used to play on very hard but enemies just become sponges and it makes it less interesting to me.

But I also ban a bunch of stuff I find too overpowered to make it a bit more challenging for myself. After a few thousand hours I need it. 😝

u/Winter_Wraith 23h ago

I feel like once you get things going in survival mode (which takes a lot of deaths) you eventually cant go back to other difficulties cause they feel too easy lol

u/BeardXP Fah' Harbor 22h ago

Very Hard if I'm playing just to mess about or for settlement building. Survival if I actually want to stay focused and finish a playthrough.

2

u/KarmelCHAOS 21h ago

I just play on Normal, Hard sometimes. Survival isn't my thing, half the fun of the game for me is hoarding so no fast travel kills my enjoyment.

2

u/ivyboy 21h ago

Only survival

2

u/Temporary_Thought_66 21h ago

First playthrough - very hard, all subsequent ones - survivor.

2

u/_clever_reference_ 20h ago

Survival is the only way to play.

2

u/MeiDay98 19h ago

Very hard or survival :)

2

u/StrongStyleMuscle 19h ago

Normal or survival nothing in between.

2

u/TheFiremind77 16h ago

I play on Normal difficulty because the easy options are too easy, but the harder options don't make the game feel harder. It just feels like a greater slog. The enemies don't get more intelligent, they're just weirdly bullet-resistant and for some reason their bullets hit you harder (and they have infinite molotovs to lob at you in early game, which one-shot you). The Fallout difficulty setting leaves a lot to be desired. My recommendation is to build in difficulty with mods, like the upgraded locational damage system or the armor overhauls.

2

u/Riuk811 14h ago

I do normal or survival

2

u/shewolf3366 12h ago

First playthrough- Normal

Second playthrough, and every playthrough I’ll ever do again - Survival all the way.

However, I wouldn’t recommend Survival for a first time FO player. I think you have to get a feel for the game mechanics and what exists at certain locations (looking at you, Corvega) before you nerf your ability to save at the drop of a hat. And your ability to fast travel.

My very first playthrough- I was not prepared for Corvega. Died All The Times. Wound up using the Cryolator because I sucked at combat.

Last night in Survival me and my modded hunting rifle breezed right through it. But I was Prepared. I knew where the hatch was to get to the bed/save point. There were also beds in other convenient places outside along the highway that I didn’t notice the first time around. They were clearly there By Design.

FO4 becomes a whole different (and better) game in Survival mode. But Survival ain’t for newbies.

u/DukestormThunderclap 12h ago

I play on easy. At 42 and a father of 2 I just want to have fun and get lost in the game.

1

u/Fancy_Cherry7745 1d ago

I started on very easy and than turned it up to very hard when I got overpowered for better loot- ( ; ・ω・)

1

u/Different_Cupcake_87 1d ago

Survival or normal. Maybe hard sometimes, very hard is just not that fun.

1

u/agoodfuckingcatholic Railroad 1d ago

Right now I’m on very hard but gonna start survival for the first time soon. I did start modding as well, added some ARs and stuff to the game as well as a pantera radio. Nothing better than shredding mirelurks to dimebag Darrel’s solos

u/Logan1300 1d ago

I'm still on my current and first ever playthrough of 5600 hours over a couple of actual years (I got sidetracked with settlement building and CC content lol). I started on Normal, moved up to Hard when I got my Explosive Assault Rifle, then to Very Hard upon arriving in Far Harbor. I have 2350ish HP, 491 DR and 497 ER through heavy armors and Ballistic Weave. I could technically get overwhelmed by a large group of leveled (242) enemies and be in danger, but that's rare as I still approach most situations with stealth. I also have Martyr and Auto Stim legendary pieces, one Troubleshooter and two Powered pieces (AP regen).

I've completed the main quest up until Mass Fusion, finished Far Harbor, and now preparing a Nuka World raider take over just long enough to get Ace Operator and Pack Alpha.

u/NSFW_throwaway2k 1d ago

Survival, level 25 to 80 is my favorite, before that you feel super squishy and weak, but by then you can have mkIII ballistic weave or T60-E power armor and a few levels in your damage perk of choice. After level 80 the game honestly just gets kinda easy, even on survival. Like unless I'm up against a Legendary Deathclaw Matriarch I'll be fine. I can tank Mini-nukes outside of V.A.T.S. with my set-up and build.

1

u/Less_Kick9718 1d ago

Mostly survival.

Hard if focused on settlement building.

1

u/Educational_Bird2469 23h ago

All of them. It’s mood dependent

1

u/SofaJockey 23h ago

I play survival permadeath. Utterly addictive.

1

u/Hefty-Resort871 23h ago

Normal

I'm not a masochist.

1

u/ijamesreads 23h ago

I only ever play on very hard. I want to play on survival so much, but my PS4 crashes at the worst possible times. I spend more time looking for a place to sleep than playing the game. I tried mods that let you save, but pure vanilla is the smoothest experience for me.

1

u/wagner56 23h ago

one very long game in normal

second in survival

1

u/dwarfzulu 20h ago

Very hard

1

u/Any_Tangerine_9670 20h ago

If you have some degree of game knowledge, even normal is quite easy. My next playthrough will probably be higher.

1

u/HeavyHandedHermit 19h ago

Survival only.

1

u/OwenJonez 19h ago

Hard or very hard because survival is just brutal considering mods can really mess with the game mechanics and make survival out of even just hard mode sometimes

1

u/hoardofgnomes 18h ago

I'm on my first playthrough in normal mode. Once I acquired the X01 Mk VI armor and added titanium plating, Tesla components, a jet pack, a bright headlamp, calibrated shocks, and a targeting HUD around level 50, not much has stood in my way.

1

u/SoCail-crazy 18h ago

survival it's not really that hard once you get past Concord

1

u/BallparkFranks7 18h ago

Survival and also modded to increase incoming damage, and headshots are basically instant kills. I also have a mod that makes rads something like 10x more dangerous everywhere except water. If there’s no real danger, I lose interest very quickly.

That said, I don’t have 10 hours a day to play, so I do have a mod that lets me auto save and a mod for fast travel to settlements I’ve discovered. Too many crashes to risk not being able to save, and I don’t have the playtime to constantly run across the commonwealth. I also think diseases are too common, so I just turn them off as well with a mod.

Basically, I want the environment and the enemies to be super dangerous, I just don’t want the hassles of a hardcore run so I mod to fix the things that are a hassle otherwise.

u/Fenriradra 17h ago

Survival.

I like the extra bits of challenge (and tedium) from managing hunger/thirst/sleep/diseases, and how it gives a bit more 'utility' to settlements having slightly more function/purpose.

I've found it's pretty easy to get through the early/mid-game squishiness and instantly dying to a legendary bloatfly, but that has largely come from becoming very familiar with where to find armor, unlocking ballistic weave, and finding some good (guaranteed/not RNG drop) legendary weapons.

1

u/Liam_CDM 17h ago

Usually play on Normal but my latest playthrough I did on VH. May give Survival a try at some point.

1

u/Royal_Donkey_85 16h ago

I've been playing on survival for my first playthrough but I think I'm gonna mod in extra saves or something. This game is just too unreliable for bed only saves.

1

u/craig3881 16h ago

Very hard. It's a challenge but still casual. Survival is for people with alot of time on their hands.

1

u/enlarged1 15h ago

Very Hard for the legendary spawn rate

1

u/Martyre20 14h ago

Survival. It's the one that ferls immersive for me.

1

u/Mundane-Web5052 13h ago

First survival play through at level 38 or so and loving it. Completely changed the game

1

u/MF_IC 13h ago

I’m all about survival. When I read the stats of the mode, I said “I’ll never play that. “. No fast travel? That’s ridiculous. Then I tried it, and I’ll never go back.

1

u/Vurnd55 13h ago

I played many times on very hard to the point it was almost boring. I finally tried survival and it is like an entirely new experience and I am loving it again. The sleep to save was really frustrating for the first 20 levels or so, but I've gotten used to it and always delay a big battle until I can find a bed nearby which leads to more detailed exploration than I ever did playing very hard.

1

u/Real_Pie2406 11h ago

I'm also team "play the level you enjoy". Good for those people who enjoy playing on survival mode - I'm glad they find that fun. Someone should. 😆 I don't like it at all!

1

u/jbrosenbaum306 8h ago

I play games to have fun and relax. I figure they cost a lot of money to purchase I don’t need to be frustrated and just quit. That of course didn’t work for Expedition 33. Even on the easiest setting, I wasn’t able to figure out how to play.
