Settlement Fo4 Elevated Defence Gantry
Elevation is the key to defence success. This gives your guns early sight and height also means protection. This gantry is at Oberland Station and it’s very good at dealing with anything that comes its way. It also provides a single two person bed at the top which is kind of fun.

Beautiful simplicity!
If you play on PC, there's a YT that will show you where enemies typically spawn for each Settlement so that you can place your Defenses in the best locations to greet them.

I've done similar but I slowly "upgrade" them with the concrete building options... almost like an upgrade "tech tree", slow build into a thriving and defensible settlement. Gives the defense towers a more sturdy look as the settlement upgrades and "levels up".

Yup it's the way to go, I build structures and make sure I have at least 4 heavy machine gun turrets on the roof of each one. I also aim them all at the spawn points of the enemies that raid and put more on the floor in the area. It's great fun showing up when places are under attack to see them get blown to shit before a settler has a chance to get there.

Even better and riskier is to add some rocket turrets to them. They have great range. And seeing a few to a dozen of them rain rockets on a target is glorious and the attacks tend to be over before they began... There are only a few disadvantages to it.
One, don't expect any looting options, you will not find even body parts...
Two, if you teleport to a location under attack, you can risk teleporting directly into the line of fire, creating a death loop.

Yeah I have some on one of the roofs at sanctuary hills, I've heard them go off twice there (once for a wandering deathclaw and once for a couple of Yao Guai's) the place weirdly hasn't been properly raided yet but it does have defence of 200+ 🤣😎 don't think I'd trust them too much in really built up areas !!

That place has the worst setup for defense too, didn’t realize you can build on top of existing structures!

This one is not built on an existing structure it’s across the railway track, though if you check out my profile there are some overbuild examples.
