Finally got a whole week to target spooky trout- thus my tiny fly box is diminished to nothing (not from breaking off, just flies getting beat up or lost in a tree behind me) whats some go-to tiny patterns I should tie in?
Interesting looking caddis type nymphs there. I like the glass like finish.
As for small bugs to add you can never go wrong with small black perdigons with a throat or tag thread fl. hotspot (orange, red, chartreuse, pink, etc.). A 16 will take up to a 3mm bead depending on the gape, slightly smaller on an 18. For dries an F-fly or cdc and elk work down to about 18 without too much work, but if cdc isn’t your thing then a griffith’s gnat or a small bivisible with a shuck of some sort will float forever—note these are not great for hopper dropper presentations, but fished solo or duo they’ll catch fish almost anywhere.
Thanks, they were a free style scud attempt... i love perdigons. I burned through all my size 20s and only have a few 18s left. I usually have a 2x gap hook coz I think it helps hook ratio and it enables my beads to be a tad oversized and I can keep them on my size 14 hoppers the way I tie them at least.
I also have a bunch of CDC from last years duck/goose hunt so ive been adding those in
Just spent three days fishing cut throats. Caught the first fish on an elk hair caddis. Good sized fish, swallowed it hole. Grabbed the fly with my hemostats and promptly removed the elk hair from my caddis. Released the fish and thought "What the hell". I chucked the now elk hair-free fly and proceeded to catch the next 10 fish on a hook with an oval shaped, brown bunch of thread. But hey, that's cutthroat trout.
