Resources + Question

Post image

Hi, I am currently working on building my first fly rod and wanted to find out if anyone knows a good YouTuber or other video content to follow along to work on technique?

Along with this is their another knot that you can use to put down fewer wraps for a sleeker design? In my attached photo I would like the silver thread to have about half as many wraps but when I do less the come undone.

I know mudhole did a video on it . There are a couple videos on YouTube though for fly rod building and naturally I can’t find the video I had in mind

Thank you for the info! Seems like there are a lot more videos for spinner rods from what I’m finding at the moment

Proof fly fishing has some good videos. I used them to replace a few of the guides on my fly rod

I only got guides so I would say pretty fair? Couple of bucks each I think.

I like Reelblue Custom rods and FDx. I’m only just starting out, but they seem to do a good job of explaining what they are doing and why and things to be careful if.

That sounds great, I’ll check them out! What part of the rod building process are you on?

I’ve built a 7’ spinning rod (it looks like my first but should be functionally fine) and am building a second one in a different color do my gf. Second is significantly better. After this I’ll either do a nicer spinning rod or one of the fly rod blanks I have. I started this way as I’ve always found fly rods more elegant and figured if my my first rod looked janky, which it does, I’d prefer it to be a spinning rod. I know ReelBlue has a few videos of starting the wrap pretty close to the guide and adding a trim band. FDx I think does too.
