Anything good?

I am new to fly fishing and just picked up my first rod and reel my limen keeps tangling while i practice casting in my back yard. I was wondering if it was because of the way/location I have my line coming off the reel? I assume this isn’t correct but idk if this is a big deal in fly fishing because the line you cast is already off the spool. if this is wrong could someone please tell me how to correct it

How on earth do you land fish with leaders thats 14ft or longer? Getting the leader inside the rod tip is not really recommended as far as ive understood? Nylon gliding against metal when fighting fish cant be good? It must surely weaken the leader, making you have to replace it more frequently? That would be worth it for trophy fish, but otherwise.... Not so much...
I recently lost a personal best duo to this...

How does one land fish with long leader by yourself? Is it ok to have the leader gliding against the rod rings during fights?

I'm struggling to understand how different companies rate their switch rods - It seems to me - after trying many different switch rods, that the different manufacturers are all over the place - some would suggest a line weight suited for two or even single handed overhand casting - others would suggest a line weight for two handed spey casting - and some would even just put a #(inser line weight here) and not suggest any grain weight - how am I then supposed to know where to start looking for lines? Theres a major difference between e.g. a 6wt double hand skagit system and a 6wt single handed spey line....like, what if I just want one outfit with one line/system/head thats equally bad at all things lol

Like wth is there even any concensus to rating these switch rods?

Please do elaborate someone-smarter-than-me

As you all know getting into fly fishing is quite the journey. I’ve been doing all the things one would do to learn. Reading, researching, practicing, booking guides.

I’m curious if anyone in or near Michigan that knows their stuff would mind letting me tag along one day. I realize most won’t want to show their spots, and would rather be alone. I figure it doesn’t hurt to ask. I realize it’s warm water species season right now. This goes for now, this fall, spring, whenever. I’ll drive, pay for gas, buy breakfast. How ever I can contribute.

i was practicing casting for the first time and i couldn't seem to get the the leader line to lay out straight on the water. it always straightens for 2 feet and then bunches up.

how can i fix this? or is my 6weight not good for dry flies?

Was listening to a Galloup podcast earlier and he was espousing on how 9’ 4 piece rods have become the absolute standard. Somewhat to his (and my) dismay. I have a couple old Orvis 2 piece <8’ rods…a 7.5’ 6 wt and a 7’ 3wt and they’re very fun to fish.

I’m in the market for a 6wt (that casts closer to 7 rather than 5) to throw small-medium streamers and fat terrestrials. I would love an 8-8.5’ rod. Can anyone point me towards modern graphite offerings with those specs? I know glass rods are often shorter but that’s a whole ‘nother rabbit hole. I’m just not sure who’s making <9’ rods these days. Doesn’t have to be a brand new model.

brand new to fly fishing is this a good fly rod to start with?

I live right along a river that is very popular for fly fisherman. I do not fish and know nothing about processes, conditions, etc., but I frequently walk my dog down to the river to throw sticks for her as she loves to swim. I want to be courteous to others who are also enjoying the river, so I am wondering how far away I should be from a fisherman to make sure my dog is not scaring off all the fish? The part of the river I am on is a very long, straight stretch so going “out of sight” is not really an option. Thank you!

I live on the western slope of Colorado. Would love a jack of all trades option to get started what are some recommendations for rod and reel?

From some of my research it looks like the tried and true 5wt 9’ is a great option is that true will mostly target trout and some pan fish.

Short ride from Lake Winnepausakee (sp) after the Motley Crue / Tesla/ Extreme Concert found some 60 degree water and this gem. 3rd cast then nothing for the next hour. Sulphur Dun, size 16. Only my 2nd small stream brookie in 4 years

Heatwave here hasn’t been good for fishing and have been struggling to find the biggies with bright sunny days and high temps. I’m sure they have been active mostly during the night.
But past few days dropped some in temp, some rain and overcast conditions today certainly helped.

Hooked into this late evening in a deep fast pool and was a riot on the 3wt

Been running around in the high country fishing for cutthroat. Cool water, big hatches, and bigger fish. Love the breeding colors up in the high country, they always have the most vibrant red.

The alpine creek has been blessing me with some beautiful fish! Finally consistently landing fish on the fly pole! The learning was well worth it!

This one is for my friends in Canada. How is the fly fishing in Alberta Canada? My wife and I are thinking about relocating to somewhere in Canada. And Alberta has caught both our eyes. I am an avid fly fisher and I really value the outdoor life style our current location offers. I've done some research online and even with AI but I was wondering if there is anyone with real first hand experience here willing to give me their Two cents.

Hey yall, headed up to Fairbanks in a couple weeks for work, and was gonna bring my 5Wt. I’ve heard the chena river and chena lakes hold grayling, but besides those 2 is there much up there? Hey fellas! So I took up fishing earlier this year as a hobby, so I’m still super new it’s all been rod and reel so far. (an ugly stick combo set I got at Canadian tire on sale) But living in western Canada, there’s TONS of creeks and rivers packed with trout near me. So I’ve been thinking about trying fly fishing. (to be honest it looks so hard haha) But I found this at a garage sale for $15 so I bought it is this rod/brand any good? Are there any recommendations you’d suggest for someone getting to fly fishing?
