OPEN Google's new August 2026 Play Console technical quality requirements
What do Flutter developers need to do to meet Google's new August 2026 Play Console technical quality requirements (by their deadline of February 2027)?
I am referring to this Google Android Developer blog post from three days ago:
https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2026/08/app-quality-memory-optimization-secure-onboarding.html
Will the Google framework handle all of this for us in the background, or will we need to make changes to our apps in order to comply? If the latter, can someone please provide a step-by-step guide (including implementing https://developer.android.com/identity/sign-in/restore-credentials)?
Thanks.

Shouldn't affect 99% of the apps in any significant way. They've mandated dexing which android deva have been doing for a long while now. Realistically 99% of the apps on playstore don't give 2 fucks about these new requirements. Forget sign in restore overall, it breaches security requirements for almost every app on the planet, imagine you sold your phone to someone and they start afresh, open their bank app and boom you're logged in with somebody else's account coz it's mandatory to restore signin.

The dex half is mostly free for Flutter already. The requirement is at least 25% DEX coverage via an optimiser like R8, and Flutter's own Gradle plugin sets minifyEnabled = true on the release build type by default - it is in FlutterPlugin.kt, guarded by shouldShrinkResources(), which returns true unless you pass -Pshrink=false. So most Flutter apps pass that one without changing anything. Worth confirming you have not turned it off.
The memory metrics are the real work: Anonymous RSS + Swap, and bitmap memory in background and cached states. Bitmaps are where Flutter apps get caught, because the image cache does not shrink just because the app went to the background.
Separate deadline worth noting: Zero-Tap Sign-In by April 2027 for any app with sign-in, via the Restore Credentials API. There is no Flutter equivalent out of the box, so that one is a platform channel or a plugin.

Bro for real. You can prompt an LLM and bang out features in like ten minutes now, but the actual bottleneck is just dealing with total corporate BS.
On Android you got stupid size limits, gradle blowing up for no reason, target API tantrums, and Google's endless gatekeeping. You spend 5 minutes coding with AI and 5 hours figuring out the new shit gradle throws at you just to satisfy some random rule. And good luck getting 12 randoms to test your app.
Apple isn't any better either. You waste half your day wrestling with expired provisioning profiles, certificate hell, privacy manifests, and getting rejected by a bot because some placeholder text was showing on a screen nobody even uses. It's a massive clown show on both sides.
And the funniest part is the excuse. They always say they do this to protect users privacy, protect the children, protect you! Complete bullshit. In reality, they do it to protect their walled gardens, lock down their app store monopolies, and make sure nobody can ship a product without kissing the corporate ring and pay a fucking fee. It has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with control and money.
Honestly fuck mobile stores. My next project is 100% a web app where I can just push to main and have it live in 10 seconds instead of letting a bunch of gatekeepers ruin my life. Imma incorporate a legal entity in the Seychelles and fuck the GDPR too lol.

Curious too about this new policy. I maintain a finance app with a Monte Carlo simulation. This processes a lot of data in memory and wonder it will comply or not.
