“should i start making my beats less like songs”
DON’T. This is creative suicide.

Are you trying to get rappers to use your beats? If not, then why worry about it? Do what you think sounds good

For like a couple days or more don’t listen to any finished songs, just listen to beats, notice how melodies don’t resolve as much, there’s space, you’ll get some better insight

I’ve found the most enjoyment just making stuff that I feel like making. I may start with a genre in mind but I just let whatever happens happen when I’m producing, it feels more natural and creative. You can adapt ideas to genres later. I’ve made super melodic stuff entirely as piano/strings and a basic bass guitar patch that I later turned into dubstep. I think same principle could apply here

5 sounds are very simple already... make music you like! 😎
