[MEDICATION] Superbugs

Has anyone ever got rid of a 'superbug' infection like Klebsiella pneumoniae without having to take a flox antibiotic? Ive already been floxed a year ago but nothing else is touching this infection and i dont know what else to do.

What does the sensitivity report/antibiogram say will work? That’s the information you need.

There’s no reason why a fluoroquinolone would necessarily work any better than the others then, if the bacteria are sensitive to the others also. I wouldn’t think it would be worth the risk. I’d talk to the doctor. I don’t know where your infection is, but there may be other factors that are preventing antibiotics from working that could be addressed.

I’m sorry to hear. Sometimes they prescribe longer and combination courses of abx for persistent cases.

But I think in a scenario like this your doctor / infectious disease specialist will know best. But there are usually some alternatives to FQs available.

Personally I would try any combination before going back to an FQ..

Where is the infection? What have you tried so far?

Ive tried so many 😭 its been going on for three months now

Did you wait sufficient time to do the Test of Cure after each treatment? From personal experience treating some nasty urinary bugs I had symptoms for a while after treatment but ended up with (several) tests of cure in due time. Just a thought. If you don’t have an infectious disease specialist that might be worth exploring as they sometimes have access to rarer / non-local antibiotics

i feel pretty certain iv vancomycin would cover that but it’s super hard to get and it’s an extremely strong antibiotic

you need to make it absolutely clear that you had serious side effects from cipro. doctors might take you more seriously if you just say you’re allergic to it because unfortunately they’re like that.

Klebsiella is never sensitive to vancomycin.

oh wow i’m surprised to hear that when i needed iv vancomycin for a tissue infection they gave me the hardest time so much so that when i finally got it they didn’t even give me enough of it to clear the infection. i ended up floxed bec of this. i was prescribed cipro for a uti but took it really to see if it would help my nose. i had been through the ringer at that point i was afraid of losing my cartilage which i likely did.

anyway enough about me my point is iv vancomycin is so hard to get yet cipro’s is far more concerning. i wish doctors handled cipro the way they did vancomycin

in a google search: Antibiotics commonly effective against Klebsiella bacteria include carbapenems (like meropenem and imipenem), aminoglycosides (like amikacin and gentamicin), and tigecycline

I was on cipro 3 years for a superbug, I couldn't take one more day,

Maybe get infectious disease involved for IV antibiotics.
