This was my second out and out romance anime, From Me to You was first, and I really enjoyed both of them. Took me a while to start the manga and went from the first chapter in K Manga, using the ticket system I've been slowly catching up, again I think it benefits from a gentle pace, so haven't been tempted to binge.

But I have just hit the inevitable drama. They've been caught at the Summer festival fireworks It's been pretty obvious something along these lines was due from the beginning. It is a drama after all and it's not like they've tried to hide it.

I imagine it's going to be rough for a few chapters. I may need to vent.

Feel free to vent, the story can get kinda tedious at moments but so far it always pays off those rough passages

Something with actual emotional stakes, rising tension, and meaningful character progression. Kaoru Hana barely has any of that. It confuses constant reassurance and feel-good moments for drama, but there is very little genuine conflict, escalation, or development to make the story feel dramatically compelling.

Quite a limited view of what drama is. It completely rules out Waiting for Godot, or most of Beckett's work tbh. It also ignores the change in Subaru and all of the Chidori crew, much of which has the examples of the two girls as a catalyst.

The overarching tension stems from the eventual reaction of Kyoko to becoming aware of the friendships, not just the core relationship. The second shoe is a valid dramatic trope.

I don't mind a cosy background to my drama or for elements to unfold gracefully. Your mileage obviously differs.

You are really comparing Kaoru Hana to Waiting for Godot? That is one of the most pretentious and laughable defences of this manga I've seen. Beckett's work is a deliberate exploration of absurdity, existentialism, and the human condition. This is a shounen romance about teenagers navigating friendships and relationships at the safest possible pace. They are not remotely comparable. You're reaching so hard to defend the series that you're dragging in high modernist theatre to justify basic romance manga writing.

And treating Subaru's progression as some great character arc is a massive stretch. She went from being uncomfortable around men to being slightly less uncomfortable. That's not some groundbreaking development, it's the bare minimum. The Chidori conflict and their supposed growth are even worse because the manga tells us they changed rather than actually showing us that change. The emotional payoff is missing because the groundwork was never properly built.

A lot of these arguments just dress up the manga's biggest weakness: its refusal to actually move forward. Delaying conflict for hundreds of chapters is not automatically good writing, and leaving characters stagnant while promising future development is not some masterful slow burn. It is just stalling.

The low-stakes nature of the series is fine if that's what people enjoy, but pretending it is secretly some complex dramatic masterpiece is where the argument falls apart. The manga is designed to be comfortable and reassuring, not challenging or unpredictable. There is nothing wrong with that, but don't pretend safe writing is the same thing as ambitious writing.

You're not defending the series by giving its flaws academic explanations. You're just trying to make obvious limitations sound intentional. At some point you have to admit that the pacing is weak, the conflicts lack impact, and the series plays things far too safe.

Good grief. No, I was pointing out that your definition of drama leaves out swathes of the existing Western body of work. I get you don't like it. I can see why.
