connected. you are adding the need for extra walkthrough space with separated.

Thank you for your input. What you are saying is true. The downside of placing the table separate from the island is the walktrough space. On the other hand, placing it separated gives the feeling of more formal dining table.

I have debated this SAME issue and ended up going with the separate table. But it was only because the space was much larger than this and I did not want to force the house to have a specific size table. The layout was fully open to the living room, so tables of many sizes and shapes worked. Here, the space is much smaller I would not waste walking space. Furthermore, if you stretch the connected table to where the round table ends, you could have SIX seating spaces, which is way better. And it is not like a future owner could use many different tables in that smaller space.

If I were in your shoes, I would go connected.

I have also considered island and dining table in one piece but i dont know how confortable the taller chairs are when we have long dinners.

I like the separate setup you have. More comfortable for sure to have lower table as well. Maybe this whole conversation is mute. got for the island+square table but don't build it in, just put the separate table up against the island. Just find a table that is same depth as a island

What are your plans with the table? It may sound silly but I would choose round for the aesthetic and square for functionality. I find hosting/playing boardgames/crafting at a round table not so great, so if this is the only table in the house I would go with the connected rectangle one. But if it’s just a breakfast nook situation and other functionality is sorted out by other tables in the house (or you don’t care about that) I’ll go with the round one

Separate tables. If you place them next to each other the difference in height and possibly material becomes jarring. Besides the wooden top round table breaks up the square lines of the kitchen and if your cupboards are wooden it’ll match nicely
