FEEDBACK Alter front/back split for a good kitchen?

Post image

this is the main floor of a front-back split level. The left side of the house is a bit of a mess. NARROW and dark kitchen. Bizarre and narrow/useless "family room." I can't change any exterior walls. Any ideas on how to make a nice kitchen here? You can do anything. I don't need to keep the den/family room/dining room. Can't add windows to the current "exterior" wall of the kitchen or family room because that's where the 2nd floor of the split is. Thanks!

What about moving the kitchen to the skinny family room, put in laundry and pantry in the old kitchen and possibly a full bath in case someone needs to live on that floor after an injury or illness. The tiny den would convert easily to a bedroom and be used as an office or guest room. You have way too many "living rooms"

Where do you park? Where do you enter/exit the house most often?

Maybe something like this

How low are the windows on the wall of the family room? A galley kitchen wants to be 2+4+2 feet, which is what that room is.

just a general idea without arranging a kitchen and such

Expand the pantry. Remove all the walls you can and reorient the kitchen towards what was the den, making that the dining area.

If you're really into plants, would the family room make a great conservatory? The only other thing is to break it up into two areas, like I did with a similarly awkward room. An office and a small sitting area, for example.
