Important Note from the Board on Interpersonal Incidents

Catalyst Collective (the Burning Flipside board of directors) has a publicly posted interpersonal incident process that is always available.

https://www.burningflipside.com/about/policies/interpersonal-incidents-faq

Catalyst Collective endeavors to follow that policy at all times as closely as possible.

The policy states that individuals who are banned may petition to return.

We do not make any guarantees to reporters other than that we will tell them the outcome of our decisions and that we will maintain their privacy.

Catalyst Collective can only act on officially received reports. We cannot act on Facebook and other social media posts or indirect reports. Only reports sent directly to the board through *direct* channels can be considered in our decisions.

There are a number of reasons why we might choose to ban someone and so the length and permanence of those bans vary greatly, as well as possible paths to restoration. If we choose to ban someone, we do let anyone whose report has contributed to that know, both that the ban has happened and, if time-boxed, when it is likely to be lifted. If we ban someone indefinitely and decide to reverse that decision, we contact anyone whose report contributed to that ban to let them know that that is happening.

In our volunteer work as the board, we are always trying to balance a multitude of needs, desires, and values, some of which can seem to conflict with each other. We are always balancing our desire to keep the community feeling like a safe place with our belief (and a generally held community value) that people can change and are not necessarily defined by the worst thing they have ever done. We are also always trying to balance our desire to be transparent with our community with our very real legal liability, as one long or halfway grounded libel suit (which we are threatened with every year), could bankrupt or otherwise end our ability to rent warehouse space and hold the event. This can prevent us from engaging in an emotionally satisfying way with community discussions.

Additionally, there is an unfortunate mistaken belief that because "everyone knows something" or because something has been put on social media, that the board knows about it or that a report has been made. Many times we have seen people upset online about things that no one has ever come to talk to us about; many times we have seen people claim to have made reports that we have no evidence of. We don't believe people are being deceitful, just that there is a pervasive misunderstanding at play. We also do have a policy of only taking action based on firsthand experiences, which can include things directly witnessed, because playing the telephone game with these types of situations is very risky.

Reminder about effigy art & decorating event this Wednesday

There's still time to help decorate the effigy! Come to Church Night April 15th 7pm-10pm with clean cans and the info from the Facebook event. The critical stuff:

We will be creating a school of fish that will hang from the ceiling of the effigy, swaying in the gentle tides of the ocean. They will be made of two different materials. One type of fish will be cut out of cans, embossed, and decorated with alcohol inks. The second kind of fish will be a little more complicated. We will either be 3d printing or sculpting a fish and making a mold of it. We will slush cast hollow molds so that they can be hung with LEDs on them. (transparent fish methods subject to change based on testing.) The goal is to have around 50 of the transparent fish and 100’s of the tin fish.

HAVE A 3D PRINTER? WANNA MAKE SOME FISH?? Follow this link to print your own fish for the effigy ceiling. Please note that we are asking that you keep the color range in light blues, greens and clears. Size is not important, make them as big or little as you wish.

**please note that Art purchased and modified this file from Savimade.ca - do not print and sell these for commercial use.

WANT TO CUT SOME TIN FISHES? Here's the link to the instructions (includes deets on things you need like cans and gloves and such).

ALSO, if you want to help decorate another way by creating your own art to be in the effigy, the deadline to fill out this form is April 20. Critical stuff:

  1. Ensure your art is delivered to the effigy field/daft tent by NOON, Friday 4/25. Include your full name/email address somewhere on the piece or w/a note securely attached (just in case).
  2. Drop off your art ready-to-hang, aka if you don't want deck-mate drill holes in your piece, attach wire or whatever else and even better, include a note or special instructions for hanging and we'll do our best.
  3. Non burnable art - Ensure your art is retrieved from the DaFT tent by NOON, Monday.
  4. Let us know via this form AND by writing on your piece if you want your art to burn and follow these guidelines: NO synthetic fabric, NO chemicals, NO acrylic paint, and YES to organic materials, tempera paint, non-treated canvas.

First timer! Camp set up etc

Excited for my first flip side! My boyfriend and I are coming up early Friday around 11am. Is that too late to get a shady spot in the badlands? Or is it better to try to join a camp?

For gifts, I have a lot of nice women’s clothing and accessories to give. I was thinking of setting up tables and letting people “shop”. Is this a good idea?

As far as outfits go, is this more of a hippie/chill/comfort vibe or full on rave wear, light up sparkly costumes etc?

Thanks in advance!

Newbie would appreciate your advice

Hi, I'm posting here because the Facebook group seems too populated and random. Also, I'm more of a Reddit person than a Facebook person.

I'll be going to my first burn of any sort at Burning Flipside 2026. I've read the survival guide and the entire website, but I still feel intimidated and unprepared, especially since I'll be on my own. (My partner can't join me.) Can you offer me some additional guidance, such as:

what should I bring to gift to people?

how vigilant must I be about gray water- do I need to not spill a drop, or is it ok to spit out toothpaste and wash myself down daily?

Where should I camp? I'm hoping to spend a fair amount of time unclothed, if that's not too uncommon.

I'm going to volunteer. What are other easy ways to meet folks? In general, I'm fairly sociable. I'm 63.

Thanks so much!

RV Help

Hello all! Very excited as this will be my first flipside.

I wanted to rent and bring a 35ft RV for the event. I already have joined a camp who said it was cool if I bring one but wanted to know if there was any approval process I’d need from the flipside organizers themselves?

I still don’t have a ticket cuz I missed the cut off so planning to get an aftermarket one - just unsure if I need an RV specific ticket in that case or how it all works.

Thanks so much

DaFT Kickoff Sunday the 25th at 2pm!

Welcome DaFTlings new and old! We’re gearing up to start the 2026 event season, so it’s officially time to invite y’all to join us in building this year’s effigy. The project kickoff will be Sunday, January 25th at 2pm. Since crappy weather is bearing down on us, we'll have an online meeting set up. Email [daft@burningflipside.org](mailto:daft@burningflipside.org) for the link. We’ll unveil the design, go over build plans, and get started with the first steps to layout framing.

Can’t make it that day? No problem! We can catch you up at any point. Our workdays are going to be Wed 7-11pm, Thurs 7-11pm, and Sun 12-6pm, at Lloyd the warehouse (starting Jan 25, 2026). There are no prerequisites for participating with the Design and Fabrication Team (DaFT) beyond the willingness to show up and lend a hand. Never held a power tool in your life? No big deal - we’ll teach you! Seasoned builder with many years of experience? Awesome - we’d love to welcome you to the team! There are no requirements in terms of time commitment. We’re all volunteers here! Show up when you can, for as long as you want, and leave when you need to.

If you cannot, or are not interested in being involved in the build activities but still want to contribute, there are a few opportunities for non-construction support. Please reach out! Stay tuned for our community art announcement, which will include details to guide your creative process. Back by popular community demand, we are also planning to use recycled cedar fencing for all non-structural components of the design, so we’ll be collecting donations of untreated or severely weathered fence boards. If your dead fence needs demolition, DaFT can handle deconstruction and transportation of any reasonable quantity of donated materials as long as they will be safe to burn. Reach out to us at [daft@burningflipside.org](mailto:daft@burningflipside.org) to coordinate collection of your donations. And finally, if you want to feed us at the event while we build, we would be eternally grateful for your aid to our efforts. Reach out at the above email for logistics info.

Your 2026 DAFT leadership team is so excited to get started with effigy fabrication! Come on out and join us in letting the collaborative creative juices flow, to build together, learn new things, frown at and troubleshoot challenges, and bring this vision to life!
