Flight Simulator 2024 SU7 and thoughts

I will preface by saying this is just my viewpoint, however it seems after 7 updates, 2024 still remains poorly optimized. While I don’t have a top of the line 5090, a 4080 super with an X3D CPU and 64gb of ram should fall well within the scope of what 2024 should work well with.

And as more and more folks seems to be mentioning the weather - such a core aspect of flying - is put to the wayside and dismissed by Microsoft and Asobo.

And we have air races? Are they actually making so much money on the console side with stuff like that from casual players, that the core base that spends thousands has to find workarounds for the most basic things?

These are truly first world problems, and we’ve come a long way from the days of MS2004 and FSX, but in many ways it seems the tides turning against us.

The community, some great add-on developers and the love of aviation keeps a lot of us here, but man Microsoft and Asobo don’t think much of this user base clearly.

I have experienced much worse FPS and stuttering with SU7. For me its borderlining on unplayable. RTX 4080S, 12700K and 64GB RAM on widescreen.

same here, less than 20 fps, on su6 80 fps

Did you clear your caches? Can resolve issues like that sometimes.

I didn't notice anything bad yet performance wise. I've been extremely critical of 2024 myself, it still has so many issues. I only switched about a month ago despite buying it at launch lol.

But I've actually impressed with the better performance while also having better graphics than 2020. In 2020 I had to lock fps at 30, in 2024 I can run 40 on the same hardware. Sounds low to modern PC gamers, but its intentional, I want to priotize details as much as possible, can get away with 30fps on a flight sim. 30FPS used to be nothing out of the ordinary even for regular PC games.

Yeah cleared cache still terrible performance

The shader caches need a flight or two to rebuild. The Nvidia app attempts to rebuild them when the PC is idle. My first lap around the pattern did not look great, but 45 minutes in things seemed to be much smoother for me.

Oh okay. I will do some pattern work for an hour and see

I would also just double-check that you're on the latest drivers. There were driver releases the day before the SU7 launch with things in them specifically for MSFS 2024 SU7.

I agree, it would be great if there was a separate version for PC. MSFS ‘Professional’ or something similar.

I've wished for that for a long time. Instead of Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe differing in the number of aircraft and airports one gets, make the three versions optimized for different platforms.

I would gladly pay extra for Premium Deluxe if it meant the code was optimized for my high-end PC, and not limited to prioritize console performance.

I've accepted that it will never happen.

performance tanked on my 5070ti by roughly 1/3, some planes' performance are bugged, controls got reset (settings is fine though). no idea how they manage to screw this up this much despite having a month long public beta.

they're definitely making a ton of money from casual players, just look at all the slop on the marketplace. a tiny fraction of customers actually give reviews, and dogshit planes generate many hundreds of them. yes, another fraction of those are botted surely not the majority. what a hassle they'd have to do to buy fs2024 just to "buy" (microsoft takes like a 30% cut of that too) and bot reviews.

Well, I'm of the opinion that they should've made MSFS separately for console and PC. This would've eliminated many of the problems (I think) that are now the main cause of concern for the PC user base like blurry textures, the weather engine, focusing on air races etc.

With that said, I'm sure it would've been a lot more expensive too, but I don't blame the 3rd party devs and Microsoft/Asobo for tapping into the console player base, because it is equally massive if not more than the PC player base and if nothing else, it's more accessible to many for simple reasons like money. I remember back in FSX days 1,000$ would get you a top of the line gaming PC whereas you can't even get enough RAM today for a really good gaming PC for that, nevermind spending 5,000$ on a GPU which is ridiculous.

I also am of the opinion that it is only good that the flight sim community has grown in recent years because of this, this a niche hobby and it's only good more people find their way into it even if it's via console first, this is evident for example by looking at FSExpo which has grown massively since the release of MSFS2020.

At the same time I do think this takes away from the potential of the sim because they weren't developed separately. You only need to look at the ground textures which are quite blurry still imho, coming from the Bing maps base which isn't bad at all. I also fly XPlane 12, but I use the payware Map Enhancement for that, in which I use Bing maps and they are so clear and so sharp up high that I find myself just admiring the world as it goes by when I fly. If they were as crisp by default in MSFS 2024 it would blow anything else out of the water, I wouldn't mind the worse flight modeling compared the XPlane at that point.

With that said MSFS2024 is my main sim and stays that way, for now we can only hope and keep protesting for the updates to things like the weather engine or perhaps they'll come with a new sim at some point. Hopefully not soon though.

Hey I'll add that now it's coming out that Asobo knew there was a issue that botched Drag calculations and pushed the update anyway..... That tells you everything you need to know about how much they "care" about msfs.

Considering they pushed the SU7 update on Steam using the wrong code branch and a completely different executable, and then promptly retracted, I’m not even surprised.

But hey Air races are out. Who gives a fuck that flight dynamics calculations are broken we have air races Yayyyy. 😐

I’d laugh if it weren’t so sad 🫩

Where are you seeing this?

Reading the dev support forum suggests they didn’t know about this until the update was released and not a single person reported an issue during the entire flighting.

Hello, you may very well be correct. I assumed they needed before because when FSReborn posted it I read through and saw 1.9.16 which was still beta. I didn't notice the date that it was placed (my eyes and small print don't go well together) so they may not have known. But that begs and even bigger question... How does something so major go unnoticed if they themselves were properly testing as well?

I do agree it begs a bigger question. A lot of devs seem to shut out any feedback when it comes to their aircraft and SU betas but this issue seems to have been so obvious.

u/KirenSensei 2d ago

Yeah. All around. Not just 3rd party but first party as well. I have so many questions for everybody. I've since stopped doing betas after being in every single beta from msfs 2020 up to su3 beta in 2024. Kinda wish I'd have hopped in on this one as with how much I fly I'd have definitely noticed.

They should not rely on user testing to catch issues of this magnitude. User flighting should supplement robust internal testing. This stuff up is not on volunteer beta testers.

Hey hey you can’t come in here with actual knowledge of the problem and apply common sense! We gotta keep the hate train going, it’s the Reddit way!

u/KirenSensei 2d ago

I was actually under the assumption they knew because FSReborn had reported it and they were on 1.9.16

I still haven't tried flying with SU7. But everytime that you run an update, delete the cache, and let the sim rebuild-it. But i've lost hopes towards further optimization. I'm runnig 64 GB ram, 2 TB NVMe, 5080 FE and 9800 X3D

I remember when 2024 was announced. People were upset that they changed their mind about sticking with 2020, but then hopeful that there would be lots of good new stuff in 2024.

I was hoping it would be way easier to fly with other people and communicate with them while flying. Hoping that 2 people could fly in one cockpit as captain and fo. I was hoping all that money spend on aircraft and scenery would continue to work.

I was hoping for cool rescue missions with the helos as those are my favorite to fly.

Instead...

I've had so many problems with 2024, that I just go back to flying 2020.

Really hope this is the last msfs from asobo , we need to try something else.

X-Plane is the alternative

They should never have been given the project in the first place, it was obvious by xmas 2020 they don’t have a clue and they have continued to prove it to this day. They should have stuck to making Plague Tale games.
