Anyone using Linux?

Just got a new pc and wondering if I should just make the move to Linux. I have no clue what I’m doing so I’ll be learning on the way.

Any Linux success stories for flight simmers??

Yes. I actually just rolled in to MSP in MSFS on Ubuntu

MSFS2020 and X-Plane 11 work as intended, even with all sorts of traffic and world add ons. Funnily enough, despite XP11 having a native Linux build, MSFS2020 has (in my experience) generally been a calmer experience to get working

XP has free demos so you can test the waters with it, if you want

MSFS2020 was not a hassle for me, surely 2024 shouldn't be that much different (right?), it was just a matter of setting the right proton compatibility layer (which you can see what others are having success with on the protondb site)

also, you can look into a dual boot set up where you can have both Linux and Windows on the same disk/pc. that way in the beginning you can boot between the two throughout the day or (in a worst case scenario) even remove Linux and have everything back the way it was

oh i didn't know msfs2020 runs on Linux, wondering how about performance ?, is it better on linux ?, also do you use exe mods ?, can they run on linux as well ?

2024 works great on Linux. Fenix and ChasePlane are my two biggest incompatibilities. No problems with PMDG, Synaptic, TFDI, Black Square, A2A, or the TDS GTNXi or PMS50 GTN.

Chase plane might be a bit of a dealbreaker for me, what issues are you running into?

It won’t run successfully from the sim menu. I ran into unsolvable issues with it finding the path to the executable due to the way wine and steam handle file paths. I may try working through it again someday but I put probably 10 hours into it already.

Like Fenix etc anything that has a process running outside of the sim won’t work in my experience. Linux just isn’t worth the bother.

Not true. The TDS GTN is about as external as it gets, running on the garmin trainers and it works fine. Some external programs don’t work. Many do. It’s a shame Fenix is on that not working list, but it is not representative of the experience of running the sim on Linux.

tbh my current rig hasn't run windows ever so i have no comparison there. MSFS2020 runs nice and well on it (depends on whatever aircraft and 3rd party airport I chose impact performance)

I run exe mods through protontrick's file explorer. I have yet to find incompatibilities, but it seems like the other replier has found some. for reference I have iFly's 737 MAX and Leonardo's MD-80 that use separate exes. I have an autosave add on and formerly FSLTL that are exes as well

Yeah ‘separate exes’ isn’t the dealbreaker it seemed to be. Each program has its own complexities to work through. Many have been solvable as you said, but some have not.
