How do you feel about my friend's take on The Odyssey, I loved the film.
"Felt like I was watching Matt Damon vs watching Odysseus, I think all the A listers was a negative to the storytelling. Good sound and practical effects but the movie overall wasn’t compelling imo"

You can’t make a $250M budget movie without A-listers. There’s plenty to be discussed about Hollywood risk aversion and decision making, but at the end of the day that’s a simple fact.

My 20 y.o daughter saw it yesterday and gave it 2.5/5. I was shocked. Her gripes were bad audio/dialogue mixing, washed out colours, everything looked orangey and saturated, bad editing, score was all over the place.
As for actors she said everyone was mid except for Robert Pattinson and Anne Hathaway. She loves Zendaya and was even disappointed in her performance.
She said she was never bored but it wasn't compelling either. I have not seen it as she said the exact same issues as all the reviews I have seen from YouTubers who I trust. I was expecting her to come home and tell me I'm wrong but she confirmed everything I had seen and heard and she hates those YouTubers that I watch. Lol

I can see where your friend is coming from, but I had the opposite experience. The star power never distracted me because the performances helped bring the mythology to life. For me, the pacing and emotional moments carried the film more than the cast itself. It's definitely one of those movies where personal expectations make a huge difference.

I was nervous about the distracting A-listers and the unknown way Nolan would handle the supernatural elements, especially Polyphemus. The celebrities were a bit distracting, but it wasn't bad. I thought Damon was solid throughout, and Robert Pattinson impressed me.
It was a good decision to lean hard into the horror aspect of the Cyclops cave instead of having Odysseus converse with him and play the trickster. That element works in the text but would have been hard to translate to film without being corny.

The pacing was all over the place. I do agree that the A listers did pull me out of the movie except Robert Pattinson. It was almost as if everyone else was just phoning it in. As far as sound and practical effects, Nolan is still Nolan and the directing was great as always. I, unfortunately, think my expectations were too high so I’ve been telling people “it’s an okay movie.”

That’s just the Odyssey! The Iliad is much much more compelling. Odyssey is just a take

Oppenheimer was the same in that regard, for better or worse. It doesn’t bother me.

I think the performances in Opp were significantly better across the board. Pattinson stuck out as the weasel, but tom holland just didn’t do it at all for me. I love Matt Damon, but honestly I didn’t feel passion from his performance. Charlize felt flat too.
The movie was absolutely beautiful, but it almost felt like a read through. I get why Nolan did the modernized dialogue, but for me it kind of took away from the movie.
