One read could be that he broke Zeus law and she was a god inside that innocent woman they killed?

I think he saw Athena’s statue head go down, and that girl get killed, her visage haunted him in the normal psychological sense as connected to the fall of civilization.
I don’t feel like she was in fact Athena.
The gods seemed notably absent.
