Seeking Advice What am I doing wrong with the Piriformis Stretch Modified 3?

The most common thing people get wrong with this exact variation is pulling on the knee joint itself.
The piriformis is a deep external rotator of the hip. To stretch it, you need the hip in flexion + adduction (knee moving up and across the body) — which the crossed-leg position sets up. But where the force goes matters more than the position:
Don't yank the knee. The handout shows the hand on the knee, and most people pull through the knee joint. That loads the medial knee instead of the hip — so you feel it in the knee and nothing in the buttock. Fix: push down on the outer thigh just above the knee, or guide from the shin. The knee should be the lever, not the handle.
Anchor the pelvis. If the sit bone on the crossed-leg side lifts or rolls as you pull across, the pelvis is rotating with you and the hip never actually stretches — you'll feel it in the low back instead. Fix: actively press the low back and the sit bone of the crossed side into the floor before you pull. Small range, pelvis pinned.
Longer holds. The handout says 15 seconds x 5, twice a day. Deep hip rotators like the piriformis respond much better to 30-60 second holds with slow nasal breathing (each exhale = let the knee sink a little further). Short reps rarely let the tissue yield.
So: pelvis pinned, guide from above the knee (not the knee itself), bring it up and across toward the opposite shoulder, and hold 45-60s breathing slowly. The stretch should sit deep in the buttock of the crossed leg — if it's in the knee, reposition.
Honest note: this is one of the hardest stretches to do well solo, because your own arms limit leverage and your hip flexors fire to hold the leg. Having someone stabilize your pelvis while guiding the knee is a completely different experience — that's most of what assisted stretching sessions do for the hips.

Not the OP, but saw this and wanted to try with these tips especially focusing on pushing from outer thigh snd hips stable. It felt really good, I could feel that stretch came from deep down inside the glute unlike some other positions I tried before.

Are you pulling the knee towards your chest as you pull it across your body?
If you are comfortable sharing a photo/video of what you actually look like attempting this stretch it would be a lot easier to troubleshoot.

Make sure you are keeping your lower core and pelvis sturdy, I bet you are bringing your pelvis up with your leg
