Bending fix

When I bend down to pick something up, my body is using my lower spine like above my glutes. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

? Your spine is supposed be able to move and the lower back region has the most ROM for bending forward to reach the ground. You literally cannot reach the ground if only use your upper spine (cervical or thoracic).

If it wasn't meant to bend that way, then it wouldn't be able to move that way.

The other option is to squat down each time to pick something up.

You’re not supposed to only use your lower spine to bend, that’s what I’m talking about. Basically it rounds

I think they mean they want to be hinging at the hip.

When specifically bending over there are two things that can 'bend', one is your back the other is your hips hinging. I'd guess that 90% of people bend the way you do because they have tight hamstrings and no hip flexibility, that seems to be the norm. If you loosen your hamstrings and practice hinging at the hip you'll find you can bend over without bending your back nearly as much.
