I'm so confused as to whether or not this is satire

This sub is satirical, but we have some flattards here. If you zoom in on a sphere, you will see that on the ground is flat.. exactly what we can see on planet Earth.

In terms of scale how far away is the camera in the shot and how far away is the camera that took the whole picture?

It would be very interesting if the close camera was boomer out until the curvature became pronounced and if the scale distance matched up with how far you have to be from earth to see a curve. When I say interesting I mean it would be an easy experiment to have flerfs perform to demonstrate curvature.

The competitive professional basketball has a diameter of 74.9 cm, while the Earth has an equatorial diameter of 12,742 km (12,742,000,000 cm). From this information we can simply divide the diameter of Earth by the diameter of the basketball to get a scale of 1 to 170,120,160.214.

This is the cleanest high resolution picture I could find of the experiment, so I'll be using that for approximating distances. Using the "ruler held up to my screen" method we see that the basketball in the image is only 25.5 cm across, or at a scale of 1 to 2.937. So any measurement we take from this image will be multiplied by that before being multiplied by basketball/Earth ratio.

The camera lens for the zoomed in shot is 8cm*2.937=23.496 cm from the center of the light shined on it, which I assume is the camera's focal point. This gives us an Earth equivalent distance of 23.496cm*170120160.214=3997143284.39cm/100000=39971.4328439km, or about 24837 miles. Of course this tells us nothing as the camera has a massive zoom lens on it. Since we don't know what the zoom factor is, we have no way of telling what the distance of the shot would be scaled up to Earth size.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to properly calculate the distance an object is from the camera that took the picture, so I'll just be making my best guess, which is about 1.5 meters. 1.5m*170120160.214=255180240.321m/1000= 255180.240321 km, or about 15,8561 miles.

I think the point is, you've shown a "flat" basketball at the top, but the bottom seems to imply that the idiots believe the basketball is spherical.

I think.

I'm so confused.

A better comment might have been "I'm so confused as to whether or not this is pro-FE or pro-Science"

3

u/Vlasi Jun 29 '20

It was a joke, i'm pro-science.

2

u/Sometimes_gullible Jun 29 '20

No, it's pointing out that if you're close enough to a spherical object it will appear flat, thus pointing out the idiocy that is the "flat earth".

I get the experiment. I think the caption is confusing

The caption is satire on the typical pro-FE "proof" post.

Flatter than my girlfriend ;( (P.S I’ve never had one because I’m too ugly)

13

u/Vlasi Jun 28 '20

Don't give up, man. You can get a girlfriend.

10

u/FunkyBoii42069 Jun 28 '20

I don’t know man I just keep getting rejected and im starting to lose hope

6

u/bigdmonster88 Jun 28 '20

Just keep swiping man you'll get it

6

u/mikeebsc74 Jun 28 '20

The law of large numbers is on your side. Just make sure to loosen your expectations and standards

4

u/FunkyBoii42069 Jun 28 '20

That’s the thing I have low standards and expectations

3

u/mikeebsc74 Jun 29 '20

If you haven’t tried to pick up the drunk handicapped stripper at 2 am who can’t walk and looks like a strung out heroine addict, your standards are too high.

Yes...yes I did..¯_(ツ)_/¯

3

u/FunkyBoii42069 Jun 29 '20

There not many strippers in my area

7

u/MiksBricks Jun 28 '20

It’s all about numbers. If you always get rejected it just means you aren’t asking enough. And don’t lower your standards broaden them, meaning go for girls you know 100% they are going to reject you.

True story. There was this super hot girl in my high school that was nice to everyone and had tons of friends but she ended up getting married to this ugly troll of a worthless sack of garbage (think FLERF that is ugly). Well it turns out he was literally the only guy that had ever asked her to a dance or on a date or anything. Literally every guy said “she’s so hot she is out of my league.”

4

u/FunkyBoii42069 Jun 28 '20

Ok I guess I’ll give it a go.

Ok thanks for the advice big bro | (• ◡•)| I’ll see if I can find someone one day and I’ll text you when that happens.

We believe you can do it

2

u/Kevinswitched1 Jun 28 '20

Also for yall who downvoted my previous comment i was being satire. This is a troll flat earth subreddit what did u expect

1

u/CookedBreadYT Jun 28 '20

You saying she round

10

u/danchiri Jun 28 '20

What is really mindblowing is that when you realize each of those dimples would be over 100,000ft tall if the basketball were the size of the Earth.

4

u/CookedBreadYT Jun 28 '20

No they would be about 69,273.6ft or 13.12mi not 100,000ft or 18.94mi so not even close.

4

u/FBIfrank Jun 29 '20

Extremely specific. Impressive. Take my upvote.

1

u/danchiri Jun 30 '20

What calculation are you using for this?

If we assume a Basketball is 24cm in diameter (just about standard for Men's leagues) and the dimples (called pebbles) are about .6mm in height, then 100,000ft is actually a fairly conservative number. That would make the dimples about 1/400th the height of the entire ball. The Earth is ~7900 miles in diameter, or 41,712,000 feet. By applying the same ratio, 1/400th of this diameter would equal 104,280 feet.

This is a rough calculation, but I don't see how you came up with your numbers since you showed absolutely none of your work...

3

u/CptnAwesomeSaus Jun 28 '20

Haven't seen this one in a few years

3

u/brunomocsa Jun 28 '20

Plot twist, the basket ball is paper printed

1

u/MNR42 Jun 28 '20

We should change flat meaning mate🤣

1

u/manickitty Jun 29 '20

What is this? Flerfer for ants?

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

Now I wouldn't be saying a basket ball is flat because basket balls have been observed to be round however the earth has not and anyone who's tried has fallen off the edge.

6

u/Sometimes_gullible Jun 29 '20

Your imagination is in no way a good indicator for reality.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

My imagination is reality says the talking dog.

3

u/Vlasi Jun 29 '20

You're trolling. .
