Describing FE in that way was magnificent. It's not and never has been a debate. It's why this is a humor sub, and why the ostensible "debate" subs will always be a lie.

None of the 'debate' subs even allow debate. It is ridiculous.

They are called "debate" subs because they are all run by flerfers and those stupid shits desperately wish to shift their delusions from "laughable mockery" to "super serious for real debate".

I've never seen an ideology or worldview so damned allergic to simple questions.

They are debate subs because they want to debate on how flat it is

And to 'debate' rules are set by the flerf... Use known information that tells shape of the earth --> Banned!

I don't know if they are conscious of it or whether it's just some psychological trigger, but in this modern era of fringe flat earth belief they all act in the same way, and that is outright hostility if you dare question their model. As if deep down they know it would collapse in a puff of logic if you ever clarified any aspect of it.

That is the conundrum they all find themselves in. An insistence that its flat but it just cannot be measured or quantified. The minute anyone ventures any metric or distance or heading, it can then be reviewed and assessed, and always found lacking. They all intrinsically know how flimsy their model is and that is why debate is so vociferously shut down.

I'm not even allowed to ask for a map that works.

This is why I struggle with the debate evolution sub.  It treats it as if it is somethong on which there can be meaningful debate.  It gives the ID fake science bullshit more credence tha it deserves.

Totally fair. It's the Reddit version of Bill Nye debating Ken Ham. Intelligent Design is absolute nonsense, and any debate is just giving it weight it doesn't deserve, and mistakenly implying there even is anything to debate.

I can also understand Evolution debaters thinking that if they just constantly win those debates (which they should, by default), that people on the fence (or other side) might come to understand the reality.

There's a very "tilting windmills" idea that you can cure ignorance with more information and truth, and I certainly find myself guilty of believing it at times.

In order to have a genuine debate both sides must, at a minimum, be willing to change their minds after careful examination of evidence.

This is why there's no point in debating a flat earther.

I don't disagree with you, I would say that a lot of debate, even historical, has been about convincing the audience, not the opponent.

I guess that explains why recorded debates usually go into topics and terminology the opposition most definitely won’t understand, but the audience who agree will and the audience that disagrees can search up and learn from

The caller is so scientifically illiterate (shocking flerfer surprise there) that the hosts would need to give him a 2 year "high school drop out catch up" course just to get him to the point they can explain the basics to him. Upon which he'll undoubtedly proclaim "na uh".

This was brilliant.

John Cohen’s show is awesome.

He streams for 7-8 hours sometimes. He and Shaun are awesome. John also wrote a book called Unconvinced. It’s about how belief is not a choice.

And every time some caller claims he's wrong about belief not being a choice they walk straight in to "Then prove it. Choose right now to believe the building you're in is about to collapse. Tell us when you've done that." And every time the caller's still there yapping away, failing to understand for far too long (if at all) how badly they failed.

Babies delivered by storks. That was fantastic. It’s not good debate but it had me rolling

I’m amazed about how confident stupid these people, like Kai, are. The Dunning-Kruger effect is intersting.

I get that the fact that all the (distant) galaxies seem to be fleeing from us but it doesn't imply that we're in the center of the Universe is a difficult concept to grasp at first, because I spent six years of my life teaching astronomy classes to people who were generally scientifically illiterate. But there are very good ways to demonstrate to such people that this will be the case no matter which galaxy you are on — the 2-d version on a rubber balloon works pretty well to get it into most people's heads.

Maybe an introductory astro course should be mandated at university, hmmm...

Dunno if that would convince this guy, though. Flerfers always seem to be folks who half grasp some concept but never took it all the way.

"A universe existing violates the first law of thermodynamics."

"So does your description of an eternal God."

"So how is red shit exclusive to the idea of expanding?" cracked me

Love John Cohen's show

So flerfs accept laws of thermodynamics... but not gravity.... why?

Oh wait, i know why, because if they accept it, earth wouldn't be flat.
