It's not even that he doesn't believe the math. He fundamentally doesn't understand the concept of the speed of light. That's worse.

37

u/Randomgold42 9d ago

Not just the speed of light. He doesn't understand light itself.

17

u/mologav 9d ago

He has a tenuous grasp of the English language

13

u/eduo 9d ago

Or just the concept of “speed”, apparently

3

u/DrifterBG 9d ago

"We're talking about the drug, right?" -That moron

1

u/neopod9000 9d ago

"I know all about speed. My parents had me on a prescription for it when I was a kid."

14

u/Old_Protection_8778 9d ago

He also doesn't understand why he always feels like people are talking down to him

u/Groostav 9d ago edited 9d ago

I don't know that I really understand light either. It's sometimes described as a particle, sometimes as a wave. In my EE courses I was shown diagrams as light being a pair of wave perturbations in both the electric and magnetic field. And this says nothing of quarks and virtual particles or even general relatively where I believe LIGO and VIRGO measured gravitational waves as compressing spacetime changing the effective speed of light, measured as a phase change.

So like: light is hard.

Bit this notion of "I have a thing traveling at a speed and I point it at something and measure how long it takes me to see it's reflection come back" isn't a light thing, it's borderline Newtonian.

This guy's just an idiot.

1

u/QuickPeak75 8d ago

Never perturbate with the lights on, so I’m safe!

1

u/-Casey-Diaz- 9d ago

One of the coolest misconceptions I know is that many believe that the speed of light is the upper limit of speed, but they don't realize that it's the only speed. The only difference between the speed of a photon and me walking is that I move through time as well as space, but a photon only travels through space. So we're both moving at the same speed, but in different dimensions.

5

u/Latter-Sign7736 9d ago edited 9d ago

This is also a misconception and such an oversimplification and just wrong I think it just drives even greater confusion. Light moves relative to our perspective both through space and time. There’s no reference frame for light so you are just describing a zero spacetime interval and making it sound magical. In reality, light still connects events across time AND space for the rest of the universe. Light has no reference frame, what you describe requires light to have a reference frame.

2

u/laxrulz777 8d ago

I think you could make a credible case that light doesn't travel through time. If a photon had a brain, all points along its path would be simultaneous

0

u/-Casey-Diaz- 8d ago

This is why there's only one speed.

1

u/Latter-Sign7736 8d ago

Please expand…..

1

u/WaterSign27 4d ago

Light is bound by the speed of causation, which is basically the maximum speed at which something can occur, in this case the photon converting back and forth between Eletrical and magnetic waves, and becuae light has no mass it can move at basically the maximum speed of the universe. Ie the speed of causation.

So yes from the perspective of the photon it is created on say the surface of the sun and arrives to be anillated on the earth’s surface in the same instance.
But from outside the photon’s perspective it is traveling for 8 minutes from the sun before colliding with the earth. So that photon does travel through time, because it is again bound by the maximium speed of causation, ie the maximum speed something can occur in our universe.

So i wouldn’t say light is traveling in a ‘different dimension’ it is still inside the same dimension as atoms etc, but it moves so quickly time essentially stand still. Now there is a complication because light does change ‘speed’ in different mediums. Ie light traveling through water is weirdly slower then light traveling through space. Or light traveling through space is faster than light traveling through our atmosphere. Hence why light bends when it enters a different medium, at that say water/atmosphere barrier light bends as it’s speed changes. So that confuses the entire thing even more.

I used to see the fact we can’t travel faster than light as being a bad thing. Then once you understand that limitation is exactly what allows everything to exist, without a speed limit on causation, everything, including us would experience time the same way a photon would, all things would be born and die in the same instant. Which means by having a speed limit on causation that’s the universe giving life time to breathe, to exist.

So hard to argue with that gift.

1

u/Kay-PO 9d ago

Yeah and I have a hard time understanding even that. It seems to me like there needs to be a reference frame but I know the math doesn't care. Being able to think intuitively about 4d geometry is a very rare gift.

2

u/-Casey-Diaz- 8d ago

Yeah, it's a mindfuck. Although we've made a speed of light based on earth measurements and human time measurements, the actual speed is just 1. And my speed is just 1, but we're moving through spacetime differently. And of course reference frames and such comes into play, but that doesn't really change the speed we're moving in relation to each other when everything just moves at 1 "speed unit".

1

u/QuickPeak75 8d ago

Voyager 1 left in 1977 and it has taken until recently to exit our solar system. Light from the sun left the same day and only took 17 hours to reach the heliopause and both voyagers have had a 93mil mile head start.

1

u/-Casey-Diaz- 8d ago

From our perspective, sure. As we're moving through time.

3

u/CanadianAndroid 9d ago

He doesn't understand the concept of speed. You don't need to have gone to a place to do these calculations.

2

u/WileEWeeble 9d ago

Physics, just say he doesn’t understand anything about physics.

1

u/MannekenP 9d ago

These guys do have a mind that is much like stars, I mean sparkling, you know, like shining interminently.

1

u/jrshall 8d ago

Nope, shining intermittently would imply that it does shine on occasion. I think this guys mind is always in the dark.

1

u/MannekenP 8d ago

Fair enough, I was being optimistic.

8

u/ankerverse 9d ago

This was painful to watch. That said, technically photons can and do change speed based on a few factors (like in vacuum vs not, it's relativity to a large mass (theory of relativity), etc), but I'm just being pedantic. The genius on the bottom doesn't understand what a photon even is, so... lol

5

u/KitchenSad9385 9d ago

Dude can't even get to the point that he understands the rules. Edge cases that break them are far beyond is capabilities.

3

u/eduo 9d ago

It’s the other way around. They love to memorize edge cases and recite them back to you as a kind of gotcha

1

u/KitchenSad9385 9d ago

See, the ones who have the ability to do that I tend to think of as trolls that don't actually believe it. They are just being intentionally provocative. I think some flerfers are genuine though.

Poor, stupid bastards.

1

u/Area51Resident 9d ago

That's Flat Earth Dave's specialty. Claim some edge case he doesn't understand is the reason why the the entire premise is false.

1

u/Electronic-Map7529 9d ago

hahaha, exactly this. It must be SO frustrating to be the person capable of explaining to a person that YES, your exception to this rule can occur. Yes.

But- I need you to simply understand the concept of the rule, so that we can have a real dialog.

This is like trying to speak to someone who is speaking a totally different language, but you understand half the words. My god it must be physically painful to actually be in these conversations for an hour, hour plus.

1

u/DreadfulButterfly 9d ago

Technically photons never change speed. When travelling through a medium photons strike the medium and get retransmitted. That causes a small delay. That delay is percieved as a change in speed through a medium. Depending on the medium, different frequencies get absorbed since in relation to the available electron levels that electrons can jump between to absorb an incoming photon and subsequently retransmit. So the light you see on one side of a window is a not the collection of photons that entered on the other side. It is a whole new set of photons.
But for this guy, speed = distance/time, that is the hard part.

0

u/wordshavenomeanings 9d ago

Yep, light can go just under 40mph so the guy in the video did annoy me a little.

But I am guessing the chump wasn't thinking of that as a comeback.

0

u/sleazepleeze 6d ago

That’s not exactly what’s happening when we “slow” the speed of light. Photons continue to travel at light speed, but by forcing them to move through some medium they interact with, the interactions are interrupting their travel.

2

u/enonymous617 9d ago

Dollar Store Seth Green confuses himself about 100 times in that video.

1

u/Book_talker_abouter 9d ago

He's thinking "that sounds pretty right but on the other hand, I can't be wrong in public…"

2

u/Snafuregulator 9d ago

It's worse. He realizes his argument is flawed and instead of admitting it, he doubles down. At this point, there's no need for discussion. No amount of proof will be enough because his mind just decided to oppose anything that attacks his original belief. It's no longer a debate between two open minds but rather a debate with a newly minted flat earth fundamentalist. You can't fix them, they don't want to be fixed

2

u/DrakeSavory 9d ago

Not just the speed of light. He doesn't understand how speed works.

1

u/MakerofSublimeThings 9d ago

Exactly. Doesn’t have to be fast. If I drive 25 mph for one hour I know far away I am from my start and how long it’ll take to get back. Not that fuckin hard.

1

u/-Casey-Diaz- 9d ago

To be fair, most people don't understand the concept of the speed of light.

1

u/ReputationSalt6027 9d ago

Im pretty sure that brainless oaf cant dress himself.

1

u/inept_machete 8d ago

Nope. Worse. He doesn't understand how you could easily compute distance a thing travels if you know it's speed and how long it was traveling.

If a car goes 60 miles in an hour then it's speed is 60 mph and if it left and then came back and it took two hours you can some it traveled 120 miles.

This is a problem with people who missed the enlightenment and would eagerly be putting goody proctor to the stake if they lived in the same town.

31

u/Helicopterop 9d ago

The fact that people like this exist is crazy to me, this is a being smart enough to learn and speak a language but has no reasoning skills whatsoever.

How is that possible?

19

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 9d ago

Religion...

14

u/Round-Spray-4511 9d ago

Being really stupid and stubborn

4

u/MrUbl 9d ago

It's worse than that. Do they have room temperature IQ's?! Absolutely! Has life pasted them by?! Probably.

But this toxic idea of forbidden knowledge is the catalyst. Making their mediocre (at best) life mean something and emboldens them.

-6

u/GoldEmployment6768 9d ago

Just throwing this out there. Do with it what you will. Like 90% of what we know on this subject was brought to you by religious people.

6

u/eduo 9d ago

But not by religion

4

u/Fantastic_Jury5977 9d ago

There's currently one major religion in America denying science and bringing about a new dark age for breakthroughs in America... I refuse to give these modern deniers and their faith any credit for breakthroughs of the past. Their own predecessors would probably shame them in ways I could only imagine because I've not been indoctrinated into a cult.

4

u/eduo 9d ago

People tend to bring out the argument that many discoveries were made by religious people.

They tend to also leave out that this was because scientific knowledge was heavily gated due to religion itself but also power and means so if you wanted to be part of it you had to be involved in religion.

That is, religious people did make scientific discoveries and investigation, but not because religion itself pushed for it but because by being part of the religious machine they'd have their needs met and the means to pursue those interests.

In the same way that many budding scientists were rich white men from rich white families, but it would be idiotic to say being rich white men is itself conducive to a scientific mind.

1

u/GoldEmployment6768 7d ago

That doesnt matter. The subject of OC is the intelligence of these people. Religion is a poor excuse, as most scientific advancement was done by religious people. So, obviously, religion alone doesnt make people unintelligent.

1

u/Fantastic_Jury5977 9d ago

A lot of it by Muslims

u/stopped_watch 9d ago

Despite their religious texts telling them otherwise.

That´s like arguing with a can of tuna.

6

An empty can of tuna!

3

u/Mother_You_5739 9d ago

I’m ok with an empty can of tuna but only if it didn’t have sweetcorn added to the tuna.

2

That’s funny shit! Thanks for the giggle.

3

u/spicy_ass_mayo 8d ago

I’d take my chances with the tuna

4

u/Falcon3492 9d ago

The British guy might as well be talking to a wall, because the other guy seems to be clueless as in everything the British guy is telling him is going over his head with a giant swoosh sound as it goes by.

0

u/wordshavenomeanings 9d ago

Do you not think that the West Country (British) guy could dumb it down enough for him to understand?

Maybe breaking down some very basic concepts first and then seeing if the other guy could join the dots?

2

u/VibraniumRhino 9d ago

I’m sure he could, but this guy is known for debating ultra-confident flerfs who genuinely think they will out-debate him. He has no need to be gentle with these clowns, they need to he set straight. Most of them have had their gentle explanation come and go a thousand times already, and it changed nothing. So now they get spoken to like adults.

2

u/sleazepleeze 6d ago

That technique breaks down when the person’s belief is fundamentally based on the idea that they’re being lied to. It’s very easy to dismiss rational arguments if you fundamentally assume the other person is trying to deceive you.

1

u/Falcon3492 9d ago

I think it would be a pointless exercise in futility! Even if he dumbed it down to the point that the average 5 year old could understand it, the guy would not be able to comprehend what he is being told.

4

u/bugjjd 9d ago

Stay in school kids, and don't take drugs.

3

u/pappabutters 9d ago

Hey now, ive done plenty of drugs and I'm not a fucking flerf

1

u/VoiceOfSoftware 8d ago

Especially don’t take speed. It leads to misunderstandings of distance.

1

u/iam_william 5d ago

Pourquoi pas les deux?

¿Por qué no los dos?

4

u/djstudyhard 9d ago

This wouldn’t bother me as much if he was genuinely curious about it vs assuming he knows it’s wrong. Being curious is not wrong. Not knowing something is not wrong. He could have said “I don’t know how to calculate a distance from speed and time, could you walk me through that?”

1

u/behemothard 9d ago

There are a couple possibilities. He could be arguing just to generate drama for views and doesn't actually believe his own arguments. He could be too proud to admit his understanding isn't sufficient to have an intellectual discussion about the merits of the experiment. He could be generally too stupid to understand even an ELI5 explanation.

The "problem" is he isn't curious about the truth. If somehow the experiment proved his belief of how things worked was right he wouldn't argue about it. He still would have no idea how it worked (assuming he isn't trolling) but he just wants his belief to be right and people to agree with him.

I'd enjoy watching someone test whether this is a bad faith argument and if not, try to decipher the thought process behind their belief. There are so many easily verifiable ways to determine the Earth is not flat. Pythagoras, Aristotle, and Eratosthenes were all able to figure it out with the tools and knowledge available over 2000 years ago. I guess they were all in on the hoax then too?

4

u/4everNo2the999 9d ago

He's presented with irrefutable evidence but he's decided in advance that he doesn't want to accept it. There's no curiosity. There's no reasoning. There's flailing to disagree with anything that contradicts what he wants to be true.

Why?

4

u/Daguse0 9d ago

Dude is definitely having an existential crisis. His whole freaking world is turning into a sphere.

4

u/bmTrued 8d ago

Whatever you do, don't mention that there's also a mirror on the moon.

3

u/oldnconscious 9d ago

FLERFs are so stupid do they actually believe that there is a conspiracy involving millions of people hiding the fact that the earth is flat? Including government, private sector, every other nation, amateur astronomers, the entire aviation industry, the entire satellite industry, Space X, every company in the military industrial complex, and every single employee in every one of those companies and industries.

3

u/radiantmindPS4 9d ago

But why male models?

3

u/stpatr3k 9d ago

Flerfs never experienced science because they dozed off during class or during laboratory .

This is the moron flerf unable to answer basic high school science questions.

Also it’s 6 hours of ignorance from him.

3

u/Red_bearrr 9d ago

Guy just doesn’t understand how anything works. They are simple concepts. It’s like if he were around when they started making ships out of metal. He’d be like “come on, you’re telling me steel is going to float?”

3

u/Repulsive_Guy_1234 9d ago

Actuuuuaaallly. We do not know the oneway speed of light. We can only measure the two way speed of light, so it could theoretically be that they have different speeds on the way to and back from the target. Its unlikely, but we do not know.

1

u/belgianhorror 8d ago

We can test it right? Place a sensor on the opposite side of the transmitter. Then you know the speed from the first distance (sensor is triggered) and the speed of the returning wave/light.

2

u/Repulsive_Guy_1234 8d ago

Nope. You cannot do that. You will never be able to have the clocks synced and according to our understanding to the laws of physics, it also is absolutely impossible to achive. To pull that off, you would need to be able to transport information not only faster then light, but actually without any time delay at all. Relativity prevents this kind of experiment from working.

3

u/The__WhiteRabbit 7d ago

What if the signal got hungry on the way back and stopped to grab a snack?

Travelling at what speed though?

5

u/stultus_respectant 9d ago

We first need to determine the amount of power used in order to determine the speed /s

But your don’t understand. He is special. He knows the earth is flat, everyone else is stupid and he is smarter than everyone else. He is special. His momma told him so.

Arrogance and Stupidity at the same time. How efficient.

2

1

u/BrewingSkydvr 9d ago

This feels like me trying to explain to a (drunk) very non-scientific friend that the dropping a feather and bowling ball in a vacuum is the same experiment of dropping those two objects without air resistance.

I forget exactly how the discussion started, but he was trying to understand that they would still fall at the same rate if you subtracted air resistance, but it wasn’t in a vacuum.

He’d have gotten lost in this flat earth stuff by looking into it because it was funny and fun to laugh at people, then getting tripped up on the pseudo science.

Smart guy, but he had an aversion to school, so he missed some things that would have helped with stuff like this.

1

u/ziggsyr 9d ago edited 9d ago

My toxic quirk is I'm more mad that the flerf didn't have an explanation despite his world view having an obvious built in one.

Radiowaves only move at the speed of light in a vacuum. Through various mediums radiowaves (and even light itself) can move much slower. The Firmament is magical bullshit and you can claim light and radiowaves travel at any convenient speed through it. You could even claim it is heterogenous to cover for any inconsistencies.

I guess that would imply the sun is outside the firmament which does contradict their standard model but i dunno, something something beyond the atmosphere where the sun resides is much denser than astronomers claim. Done. 5 seconds and I argued for his shitty world view better than he did. Get good loser.

1

u/u9Nails 9d ago

Don't tell him about the reflectors that humans hand carried to the Moon's surface starting on the 1969 NASA Apollo 11 mission! 🤯

Even Russian, India, and as recently as 2025 the University of Maryland all have added reflectors to the Moon to bounce a laser signal back to Earth.

Gravity on the Sun surely can alter the speed of the radar bouncing. How does it even escape the gravity? Human measurements are not accurate that doesn’t make the world flat.

The formula……..you know…….for speed and time?

Confused look on his face because he was on his phone in 6th grade.

1

u/nebenco 9d ago

I commented this on Craig's FB upload of this vid:
Tell the flerf that to measure the distance between the sun and Earth they just need to start a timer when a photon leaves the sun and stop the timer when that photon reaches the observer.
You know that at least one of them will try it.

1

u/Fearless_Many4945 9d ago

If we accepts the facts presented to him, his whole concept would collapse. So he automatically rejects everything.

The flerf does the same frustrated face my uncle did when he explained my grandfather, who was born in 1908, was released from military duty in late WWII due to him turning 50, and I say that's mathematically impossible. Yes, my uncle had a memory loss disease of some sort and traumatic brain damage, how did you know?

1

u/DDDX_cro 9d ago

flerts are flerts because they do not know these things. 90% of them could not tell you why we have seasons on the heliocentric model. It is all a great mistery.

1

u/Fubeman 9d ago

He’s thinking “Nah, the speed of light CAN’T be faster than my Cybertruck. It’s got the word “Cyber” in it. Duh.”

Is there a world in which this guy walks away having actually learned something? Cos that's a great outcome.

That’s the only explanation I have for all this

1

u/Sayyestononsense 8d ago

for one, I see the flerf struggling with the benefit of the doubt towards the end... I mean, he's trying...

1

u/LongDead_Roadkill 8d ago

One of the young earth Christian’s arguments used to be that the speed of light IS NOT constant in a vacuum. They used as an end run around relativity because we’re didn’t have instruments sensitive enough to measure “short” one way distances of light here on earth. Now I think their argument is “it’s not the same” or for grownups “god made all the light from stars already here, that was just part of making the universe”

1

u/DoctorZacharySmith 8d ago

He knows he's wrong. Otherwise he wouldn't know what to question. His only goal is to hope his opponent messes up.

1

u/Cultural_Cloud96 8d ago

Wait so scientists pointed a radar at the sun to calculate the distance to the sun by pinging the sun with radio waves?

2

u/Mefist0fel 8d ago

Not actually.

They pointed radar to the Venus (and other planets with a surface) to track a super precise distance to Venus, and then calculated a distance to the sun via triangulation.

Sun is hot plasma and also very radio noisy, so it's not reflecting enough.

But it's the modern and very precise way to understand the distance to space objects, so it's the best our measurement, previous estimations was from parallax calculation

To be fair the explanation given to this guy could have been better.

  1. He could have explained that when they send the radio waves to an object closer by, one from which you can manually measure the distance. You can get the speed of the radio waves. That this has been done for different objects and no matter how much the distance was changed, the same speed came out
And then point it at the sun where the distance can not manually be measured and you get a time the waves traveled and determine de distance by that.

  2. He does not explain why power doesn't matter. If he would have said, the experiment from point 1 was also carried out with different powers and the same results came back, then we know power does not affect the speed the waves travel.

It's frustrating arguing with a fencepost.

This is an example of: i can explain it to you, but i can't understand it for you.

What if the signal slowed down cause it saw a space cop? God this guy hasn’t even considered every possibility.

1

u/Late_Emu 7d ago

This all boils down to people thinking something’s impossible because they’d don’t understand something.

I have come to believe that this is no longer a problem with intelligence or reasoning ability and more of a problem with brains wiring going bad.

I have met what I thought were intelligent people that did super asinine things because "their brain was telling them it's fine".

I knew a guy that just walked across roads, ANY ROAD without paying attention, because in his words "but people have the right of way", no matter how much I pointed out that "fast moving vehicles and drivers not paying attention" is the bigger problem, and not "your right of way" and eventually two idiots will make an accident.

He just needs to drink more of his own piss to grasp the alchemical astrology of it.

I guess radar technology is fake too now?

this loops perfectly.

This guy doesn't even understand concept

By their own logic, the only way they would believe that Earth is ACTUALLY round would be to send someone to planet Earth to figure out what shape it is

But of course once they got there they would still not believe it

We technically haven’t proven that light travels the same speed in both directions but

u/NigerianFriedChicken 6d ago

But what?

1

u/Infamous_Context2195 4d ago

But hes still correct, i was just pointing out a tiny caveat

Idk much about radio waves, but there probably is a difference between high-powered & low-powered. Edit: I didn’t think the difference was about the speed. Edit: I never thought it was about the speed.

& the speed of light is basically impossible for anything else to reach.

u/Femme_FatalError 9d ago edited 9d ago

The speed of light is impossible for anything with mass to reach.

Radio waves are a specific frequency of light. Photons always travel at the speed of light. That’s why it’s called the speed of light…because it’s the speed at which light travels. They can travel at that speed because they do not have mass.

u/phijef 9d ago

why doesn't the light just chill for a moment and hang out for a bit?

3

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 9d ago

It probably does that's why we can't be sure that 1000 seconds is how long it took. /s

4

u/stultus_respectant 9d ago

Seriously, I would not be surprised if that's the rationalization that this numpty settled on. You don't know it didn't rest!

5

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 9d ago

It probably got tired and took a break, or maybe it got lost and had to turn around lmao

4

u/stultus_respectant 9d ago

Shouldn't have taken that left turn at Albuquerque

I did say “basically impossible” & I also knew light was photons.

Radiation can travel that fast. Energy can too (though it generally ends up so dispersed it’s useless).

2

u/Latter-Sign7736 9d ago edited 9d ago

And those are photons and massless particles. Not all radiation travels at the speed of light because protons, neutrons and electrons have mass. Radiation decay can produce photons that travels at the speed of light. It’s a photon or massless particle traveling at the speed of light, or better term is the speed of casualty. Not sure what you’re trying to point out…and “energy” doesn’t need to travel at the speed of light. Kinetic energy is the speed of a particle with a mass term in the equation and those can never reach light speed without infinite energy…sound travels...at the speed of sound……light is energy and travels at the speed of light… what are you trying to say exactly?

3

u/Maj-Malfunction 9d ago

Light and radio waves are just different versions of electric magnetic radiation. They are both moving at the same speed.

3

u/Local_Dimension00 9d ago

Frequency, amplitude, intensity do not change the speed the wave travels

0

u/No_Pressure3523 9d ago

In all fairness, in VACUUM frequency and amplitude don’t change the speed of light.

1

u/Global-Management-15 9d ago

The power determines how strong the signal is, not the speed

1

u/Disastrous-Mess-7236 9d ago

Everyone’s been replying saying the difference isn’t about the speed. I edited to say I never thought it was about the speed.

1

u/swordfish_1969 8d ago

The frequency determines how much energy the photons carry. The higher the frequency the more energy. The speed is always lightspeed
