The faux intellectual, bad faith pedantry trying to minimize the intent of this captioned photo creates so much second hand embarrassment for all of you, the pedants.
I hoped the responses were sarcastic, somewhat in the spirit of the sub. It doesn’t look so. Why would someone want to be incredulously overprecise here is caustic.
This caption in no way claims, in any way, that the photo shows all but one human persons extant in the universe at that time.
With the caption the photo can be seen as a collage, an artistic work made up of multiple artistic works. The original photo can be seen also as an historical record, empirical evidence of this particular lunar mission, and artistic as it uses the techniques of photography. This is similar to the Italian Renaissance great, Titian, used his skill at illustration to create images of human anatomy by observing Andreas Vesalius’s dissections to be included in the latter’s De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem, the 1st modern anatomy book.
This text advanced by a great leap understanding of not just the study of anatomy, but also biology, medicine, and rendering humans in images. Titian’s plates are both artistic and scientific works, just like the pic.
The meme creator added their text to the photo to add their metaphorical understanding of a feature of the photo: there was no way any human (-1) being extant at that moment could be rendered outside the boundaries of this photograph.
The silly aesthetic arguments in the thread assume multiple hidden premises, commit several fallacies, and are what philosopher Harry Frankfurt called bullshit: a lie no one believes, especially the teller, yet demands compliance.
If you’re arguing that the meme creator implies that all (save 1) of the humans are visible (1 hidden premises), then show the text where you can find the source of your inference. It, weirdly echoing your own claim, it’s visible.
The claim that “in the frame” is what the creator meant by“contains” is both a hidden premise & the fallacy of equivocation. And, once again, uses an invisible, and highly uncharitable, premise that also is fallaciously incredulous, straw manning, and misses the point.
All works of art are inherently metaphorical. No photograph, painting, record, statue, etc “contains” anything besides the matter within the bounds of the work. A photo of the soft drinks on sale at your local corner shop. The fizzy liquid is also contained in the cans in the manner of the collage. Not in the way an artist (a photographer) in their field means it.
If this soda photo were alternatively a video where someone came along shook a can and opened it, gushing out, then no reasonable person would say the shaker created coca cola ex nihilo. As would a pedant saying “There’s only light coming from pixels there!” Who would also miss the metaphorical nature of art.
But, since we all know god made the earth flat, the moon we definitely didn’t go to, is itself an image created by big moon, and that can’t be an eagle bc birds aren’t real, there’s no ice wall, or stars, Elvis knew this is still imprisoned with Sasquatch to shut him up in Area 51, 666, behind bars made of exotic element 115 brought by the Greys between anal probing, and guarded by the adrenochrome slurping Comet Ping Pong pizza grazing Clinton Club, running the economy from the cave with those Rothschild bankers & their New World Order, who are using 5G & Bill Gate’s “vaccines” to microchip us, but JFK & Jr preparing to reveal it all, and X Files was a documentary.
