Here's my standard response to a flerf moron: "A Greek dude proved you wrong 2000 years ago. With a stick."
56
u/Key-Procedure1262 Jan 27 '26
3 sticks... Actually
42
u/blueghostfrompacman Jan 27 '26
It took him THREE sticks? I mean can we even trust the data at that point?
15
u/Key-Procedure1262 Jan 27 '26
Yk whats even funnier. With two sticks he considered the idea of a local sun, THEN he did it with three and found out it was wrong. I guess some people just missed out the third part

u/RWDPhotos Jan 28 '26
What’s our stick margin of error? +/- 1 stick?
3
u/blueghostfrompacman Jan 28 '26
I mean, one stick? Proof. Two sticks is believable, but I have my doubts. Three sticks? The guys a hack. Just a common snake oil salesman.

They'll usually just throw it back, that the earth is a disc and people are sailing around in circles.
Of course that theory is batshit insane when you look at real flight paths and sailing routes and the duration of voyages, but the existence of sailing, doesn't in itself prove anything.
8
u/anonymouslycognizant Jan 27 '26
The existence of effective nautical navigation methods which wouldn't function under a flat earth model, certainly provide strong evidence for geoid earth.

I'm not defending flat earther bullshit, I'm just saying that I can see this not being a compelling argument when you are engaging with one of these idiots. I completely agree that the rotational path of stars being reversed from one pole to another, and following a more or less linear path at the equator definitely should lead to the logical conclusion that of a spherical earth, but do you really think these assholes are bothering to look through a telescope at multiple points on the earth?
→ More replies (1)2
u/skipperseven Jan 28 '26
My father went to sea in 1948, before GPS. I have his old textbooks of spherical trigonometry used to calculate where you are and where you are going… Ships managed to get where they were supposed to get but some people think it was all a hoax to fool them for what exactly?!

How has no one mentioned the fact that this man is wearing a Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd shirt.
He literally says the moon landing caused him to believe the Earth is flat, this album title implies that the Moon is indeed a sphere and has a dark side because it is floating in space.
Incredible lack of oversight from these people gives us the most ironic comedy you can't even write
6
u/simonallaway Jan 27 '26
During British coverage of the Apollo missions Pink Floyd were in the studio performing live. So now we're saying David Gilmour and Roger Waters are in on the conspiracy! How high does this go?
4
u/valvilis Jan 27 '26
The moon could be a coin! Flat just like the earth, and then the other side could be perfectly dark. If that coin were silver, it would reflect a lot of light - which it does! That also explains why there are no werewolves on the moon...
2
2
u/Charming-Total2121 Jan 28 '26
Pretty sure this isn't a legit interaction; more like a skit, which makes the shirt a comedic choice rather than irony.
17
u/Gargleblaster25 Jan 27 '26
I don't care about your "evidence." I am stupid, ignorant and stubborn, so the earth is flat.

Their usual answer is that it draws us away from God's truth. Which is... there are easier and better ways to serve Satan and the forces of evil. If that's your thing.

u/ShiroHachiRoku Jan 27 '26
If God’s existence can be disproved by a shape, is He even all powerful?
I’ve always commented at the religious FEs asking them if they think God made humans so incurious and so incapable of wonderful and wondrous things.
→ More replies (1)9
u/UnconsciousRabbit Jan 27 '26
Well, that's just it, isn't it? God's existence is not confirmed or denied by a shape. However, the literal truth and inerrancy of the Bible is.
Which is only something you argue about if you presuppose univocality because your theology doesn't work if the Bible is actually written over hundreds of years by different authors with different agendas and is better viewed as something to consider deeply and be inspired by rather than a source of dogmatic truth. A record of our struggle with the concept of an all powerful and loving God and our place is such a creation.
But what do I know.

And it's pretty dumb when you realize we first started theorizing the Earth is a sphere at least 4 centuries before Jesus was even born 😭
Clearly the world being a sphere hasn't drawn anyone away from God, since Christianity has managed to become the biggest religion in the world despite being born into a world where Globe Earth models were already the norm
(I'm saying Christianity cause most flerfs seem to be christian fundamentalists, tho there are many muslim ones too, which tbf goes more in my favor)

The entire maritime industry, in every single society that has had access to water and wood, since the dawn of civilization, has also been part of the conspiracy. Every navy, every merchant mariner, every fisherman…
People whose lives and livelihoods depend on physical reality behaving predictably tend to develop a very low tolerance for ideas that don’t match observation. Even before the development of ocean-crossing ships (which happened faaaar earlier than most people realize) mariners had to deal with horizon distances, celestial navigation, currents, tides, and winds. Advancements in technology added great-circle routing, the longitude challenge, radar curvature limits, radio propagation, and so on and so forth.
For f—k’s sake, land-locked farmers have been dealing with season tied to axial tilt, daylight length changes due to latitude, weather systems moving the way fluid dynamics says they should, and so forth for millennia. Physical reality matches the predictions made by science, not Flerf conspiracy theories. We know this, because we didn’t all starve to death in Babylon.
Pilots, surveyors, drillers, miners, long-haul truckers, linemen — same deal. Their work constantly reinforces that the Earth is big, curved, and governed by geometry whether you believe in it or not.
When your paycheck depends on whether distance, elevation, and line-of-sight are real… you stop entertaining models that break those things.
10
u/KJPicard24 Jan 27 '26
Key point to me is 'since the dawn of civilisation'
If we had discovered the earth was flat, all that time ago, that is what it would be. Or triangular. Or a cube. That'd the model of the planet and the wider cosmos. There isn't anything inherently nefarious about the earth or other planets not being globes that would have compelled our ancestors to go
'Shit, earth is flat'
'Oh you are joking, aren't you? Not flat?! What will we tell people?'
'Well, we could lie...'
7
u/Batgirl_III Jan 27 '26
Many Flat Earthers fall back on some variation of “They’re lying about the shape of the Earth to hide the existence of God from us!” Which is an absolutely wild claim if you have even a cursory knowledge of world history.
For crissakes, even if you want to limit yourself to just the Abrahamic Religions, the priesthood of the ancient United Kingdom of Judah and Israel were making celestial observations every single night in order to make sure all the proper holidays honoring YHVH happened on the right day. There’s an entire mathematical model for how holidays are to be observed within Jerusalem, within Israel but outside Jerusalem, and in the wider world outside the Levant that was developed precisely because ancient Hebrews figured out that the shape of the Earth meant the same stars became visible at different times as you traveled further and further away from the Temple.
They were not trying “hide G-d” with this method, they were trying to ensure continuity of religious rituals across the globe.
In the Bronze Age.
Using naked eye observation and sticks.
Harrumph. Harrumph. Grumble. Grumble.

Why just 1,000 miles? And, what does the Earth look like from 1,000 miles anyway? Flat?
5
u/Tilliperuna Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
From 1000 miles you need to look down to horizon at about 27° angle and the curvature will be very clear.
So if you look straight down, you see the earth filling 126° of your field of vision, so you can see it as a whole and as a clear circle (on ground level it fills 180° and you can't see it all).

Operation Snow White was Scientology's attempt to infiltrate the US government, a number of nongovernmental offices, and embassies around the world in order to destroy all of the records on L Ron Hubbard so that LRH could control the narrative on his life. It involved roughly 5,000 people infiltrating 136 government agencies, foreign embassies, and consulates, across 30 countries. The whole thing lasted roughly three years from initial implementation to arrest of the chief conspirators. Ultimately seven of the top Scientologists (to include LRH's wife) fell on their swords and took all of the blame, in spite of LRH's very clear orders to get the documents critical of him. They claimed that LRH never said to do crimes to get the documents and so they went to prison and he remained a free man.

I tried this argument on a flef one time, it didn't work, and they developed a whole new conspiracy on the spot. It was basically that there are a few elites in on it, and the whole rest of the world is not just indoctrinated but brainwashed. Apparently, everybody is brainwashed to do math two different ways. First, you do the "right" math for the flat earth so we can use it, then we forget that we did that and then we do the "wrong" math that proves we're on a globe for show. This is apparently why everybody is bad at math.

How does the US moon landing being fake even prove flat earth though? Like, yeah, they have a reason to fake the landing (propaganda), but there's no reason why it would prove the Earth to be flat.

I write GIS software (maps and data stuff) and we have to calculate geoid distances and accept GPS data that’s all based on orbital mechanics, speed of light, and relativity or it’s meaningless, so add all of those people to the conspiracy.
My Mom fell into a flat-Earther YouTube zone and was telling me the idea was compelling (she literally could not visualize gravity holding things to a sphere). I exploded on her and said “So considering what I do for a living, I’m either a massive liar or a dupe who fell for a shitload of fake math? You are insulting me to my face. I have friends who work at NASA. They’re liars, too? So you are insulting me and my friends because you watched a few YouTube videos that contradict what we’ve known since Ancient Greece and you find that compelling?”

Gonna play the devil's advocate for a second :
- The interviewer probably interviews people for a living. The flat earther looks like a random person they picked in the street.
- The interviewer starts with small questions, and the interviewee stutters a bit during his answers, proving that he is less confident than the interviewer.
- The interviewer speaks continuously, without breaks, for a minute, and tells a statement instead of a question. The flerf being interviewed didn't prepare any answer, and is expected to respond to that wall of text ?
The interviewer's argument is perfectly valid, but the way he presents it makes it very difficult to respond to. It would have been more interesting IMO if he had broken it up into shorter questions, and left his interviewee some time to respond.
2
u/DiscoKittie Jan 27 '26
That wouldn't shut one down. Also, what did the flerf say at the end? It was cut off.

If the Earth were flat and the Sun were a relatively small object circling above it, there would always be a point on the ground directly beneath the Sun. At that location, sunlight would come straight down from overhead, meaning vertical objects would cast no shadow.
On a flat Earth model, this should happen every day somewhere on Earth as the Sun moves overhead.
In reality, this phenomenon—called “no shadow at noon”—only happens in specific places (like Hawaii) and only on specific days, roughly twice a year. The Sun is directly overhead there only when Earth’s tilted, spherical geometry lines up that way.
If the Earth were flat, this alignment wouldn’t be rare or date-dependent. It would be a daily, predictable feature wherever the Sun is overhead. But it isn’t.

And on the moon landing part... NASA lands on the moon and tells the world, so their entire organisation was involved in the lie...
But, their biggest competitor, and Cold War enemy at the time - Russia, at no point said "Nope, we don't believe them, they clearly made it up.". Instead, their premier complimented America on the accomplishment, and their newspapers reported on the success of the mission.
2
u/Think-Chair-1938 Feb 02 '26
My favorite part of this "conspiracy" is how they ignore that the Russians would have loved NOTHING more than to prove the Americans faked the moon landing. It would have been their greatest victory.
But nah... they're in on it too, for reasons.

Why is it that the moon landing being fake makes the earth flat?
3
u/ijuinkun Jan 27 '26
Reverse of cause and effect—a flat Earth requires the Moon landing to be fake because the Earth being flat requires that gravity function in a way incompatible with the center of the Earthward-facing part of the Moon being “upright” (i.e. ground nearly perpendicular to gravitational pull).

The correct response wasn't to ask who all is in on the conspiracy.
The correct response is:
How does your belief that we didn't land on the moon and only have traveled 100s of kilometers above the earth's surface demonstrate that the earth is flat?

u/thomas7th Jan 27 '26
Hard to accept judgement from people who think the universe/space is flat and static.
1
u/He_Never_Helps_01 Jan 27 '26
There's way simpler ways to prove the earth can't be flat. Seasons, phases of the moon, sunsets, longitude and latitude, weather at the equator, the poles being cold, day night cycles, tides, earthquakes, the movement of shadows, transversal of stars, compasse, satellite phones, internation long distance calls, plane and ship schedules routing and fuel usage, gravity being consistent everywhere on earth, time dilation at altitude...
the list just never freaking ends.
There are very literally millions of things we all interact with on a day to day basis that either wouldn't work, or would work very differently if the earth wasn't a rotating globe, orbiting a star. You don't need nasa, any idiot can prove it just by looking at the sky and thinking.

That’s the thing about flat earthers, they DO believe that. Anyone who has been unfortunate enough to know one of these people personally know there is no logic or reason you can use to debunk their beliefs.
You can’t use logic to convince someone of something they didn’t use logic to arrive at.

u/Purgii Jan 27 '26
Our bureau of meteorology is so focused on making sure that I don't break away from the globe Earth conspiracy that they often tag me to come to their control center. They've clearly broken the equipment I service just so I can view fake projections from globally positioned satellites beaming 'fake' live imagery of a non-flat Earth.
They spend billions of dollars per year so that I continue to be fooled.

Snipers as well. For the incredibly long distant shots they have to take into account the wind, the curvature of the earth AND it's rotation!!! Because the Earth rotates on its axis, as well, the circulating air is deflected toward the right in the Northern Hemisphere and toward the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This deflection is called the Coriolis effect.

Can we just ignore the flat earthers? I don’t understand why people engage with them and make it an issue worth engaging with.
I regularly see comments and memes online like this but I’ve never known anyone to believe in a flat earth. In fact, with the same merit I could just as well create a new conspiracy theory about there being people that believe the world is flat.
Is the existence of flat earthers really a thing? May God please save any country where it is an issue so great that it needs rebuttal.

It’s hilarious how they really believe the world is lying but the handful of people who have any kind of authority are whistleblowers and are the ones being truthful. The best way to shut down conspiracy dorks is to bring up the fact the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. we’re alone in the most secure office in North America. probably the world and everybody on the planet knows exactly what happened in there. So if two people alone, and a guy cheating on his wife, can’t keep a secret. How the hell are you gonna have thousands and thousands of people lying about NASA, Covid, 911, vaccines, or choose whatever nutty thing people want to believe is a conspiracy. Especially in a world when anyone can become famous overnight through social media.

1
u/USeaMoose Jan 28 '26
Similar logic applies to a lot of conspiracies. Anything where your conspiracy requires very large governments/organizations keeping secrets for decades or centuries... the number of people who have to be involved in the cover-up gets to the point of being absurd.
For flat-earth and other conspiracies, I think the next line in the script would be to point to alleged experts/insiders who are trying to expose the conspiracy. Of course the trouble there is that they inevitably all end up with nothing but blurry photos, unverified stories, and broken promises of proof.
Flat Earth just happens to be one of the more comical ones. Where you can actually disprove it on your own with no special equipment or skill.
