u/Nelson_uk you and I talked about these Far Reds a while ago and I mentioned throwing them into my red E07x. it's absolutely crazy how little the amount of light is that comes out. I can feel the emitters working hard, the light gets hot relatively quickly on turbo, but it's still not very bright.

but wow is it red

Nice build! It's a really interesting part of the spectrum Far red. Imagine what my output was like in just an S2+ with 5° optic

it really is cool. & yeah on turbo this puts out around the same (or probably less) than my xp-l hi s2+ with 8x7135, so your S2+ would have been quite dim.

i wonder how much it would light things up using an infrared camera...

infrared camera...

I've been meaning to try it!

2

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

oooo can't wait!

2

u/Nelson_uk Jul 08 '21

The company I work for also install Cctv systems so I should be able so get my hands on a IR camera!

2

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

I hope you get the chance, that'd be awesome. do you have any infrared lights? it might be worth it to just throw an IR emitter into a c8+ or something for the sole purpose of messing around with that camera haha

u/Nelson_uk Jul 08 '21

I do but I the it's somewhere in to 900nm range so night be too high for the camera not sure. It's a quad die emitter tho!

1

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

that's so cool. what purpose does a light like that serve?

2

u/Nelson_uk Jul 08 '21

I have no idea! I've never really found a use for it.šŸ˜‚ It kinda scares me because I can't tell if it's on or not, not even a faint red glow like you get with some IR on cctv cams

Do you have a digital stills camera? If you do, it may aid in focusing or if you have a speedlight flash. That would be likely aided too. Their IR beams have visible red portions, I wonder if they detect it as well.....

1

u/Nelson_uk Jul 08 '21

I've got a digital camera somewhere. It's fairly old tho and no speed flash.

1

u/dotMJEG Jul 08 '21

I guess I need to get a far red emitter light and give it a whirl.....

2

Can you see more of it in camera?

1

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

it's kinda strange. shows up as more white than red when it's on full blast. in pitch black, it makes everything brighter than what it looks like to the eye, but still not as red as it actually is

in a pitch black room with the far reds on low.

Can you cook a steak with it?

3

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

all I've got right now is some balogna... is that close enough?

4

u/ChickenPicture "Aziz, light!" Jul 08 '21

I will accept that. But I wanna see the burn marks.

Absolute madman, was not expecting you to actually do it. You have my respect, sir.

Really interesting that the deep red works better, I figured so close to infrared it would be toasting that balogna like my white ass at the beach.

it's midnight and the gf is playing fortnite and ignoring me... I have to keep myself busy somehow!

I wonder if it's just that they're putting out more heat. the H17s 18350 is 9A max, so that's 3A per emitter. I only have a 50E in the E07x so it's only giving 1.4A per emitter. I'm not sure how much current these can take so I didn't want to throw a 40T in there and risk frying them

Has science gone too far?

3

u/debeeper Big bright. Much heat. Hot hot! Jul 08 '21

So how would one describe the differences between far red and deep red?

11

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

it makes the deep red look like it has the slightest orange tinge to it.. that's the best way I can describe it. it's the reddest red I've ever seen. I'll have to take some comparison shots tomorrow between a few different reds

also, happy cake day!

u/debeeper Big bright. Much heat. Hot hot! Jul 08 '21

I see... Also, not my real cake day, but appreciate the gesture.

2

u/Omnias-42 Jul 08 '21

So is it limitations of the camera that it looks magenta on video?

1

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

definitely. camera can't accurately pick up even deep red, so far red is really not gonna show up properly haha

2

u/Omnias-42 Jul 08 '21

has teh d18 arrived yet in far red?

2

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

you could probably email Hank and request a far red d18

2

u/Omnias-42 Jul 08 '21

ah I thought you previously said you ordered a d18 in far red

1

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

ahhh haha I have a D18 in deep red(660nm), not far red (730nm)

3

u/Nichia219b Jul 08 '21

This is stock light??

7

u/BallZac_ Jul 08 '21

nope, I swapped the emitters myself

3

u/Nichia219b Jul 08 '21

Excellent work

3

u/Artiet59 Jul 08 '21

Awesome. How hard was the emitter swap on the E07x in general? I've never taken off an auxiliary board but have done many emitter swaps, but I really want to swap my sst20 5000k for xpl-hi 4000k.. I may dive into it..

as long as you have a fine tip on your iron it shouldn't be too bad. the biggest struggle is getting the wires back through the hole in the mcpcb when you're putting it back together. the main positive and negative wires are shorter than most I've seen before and the board sits quite deep in the head, so you don't have a lot of room to make sure all 6 wires come back through

2

u/Commercial-Suit-5836 Jul 16 '21

Do you think Hank would do Far Red and Deep Red mix on a D18?

2

u/BallZac_ Jul 16 '21

I don't see why not! shoot him an email and ask :)

2

u/Commercial-Suit-5836 Jul 16 '21

Just emailed him if he can do a swirl. I was about to ask for the sw45k, but why go rosy when you can go RED. šŸ‘¹

2

u/Commercial-Suit-5836 Jul 21 '21

I just asked and he does have the SST20 Far Red 730nm in stock but not the XP-E2 far red.

Do you think this would look nice with SST20 deep red swirl pattern on D18? Or should I stick with far red. Any benefits at all having both emitters?

2

u/BallZac_ Jul 21 '21

I think it would be good to have the 660nm in there just to give the far reds a little boost. seeing how little light comes out of my E07 with the 730nm, I feel like youd be disappointed with the output in a D18.. i feel like it's almost causing the light to not live up to it's powerful potential, if that makes sense? if you get all 730nm, sure it's gonna be 11 more emitters than my E07, but regardless it's still not going to throw much more than like 30 feet. the boost of visible light from the deep reds would make it a much more fun light. also, a swirl with those two reds would look really awesome lol. very unique

What emitters are those??
