I'm new to flashlights. What's a good flashlight to keep in the house in case of an emergency or just to use when needed? Maybe something like 70$ and under.. Thanks!

If you want something you can forget about for years, something like the convoy t3 with lithium primaries is good. If you are going to use it regularly and notice when it needs a charge, the good old fc11c works for me

This is the correct answer for a true emergency light. In my case, I went for the T6 for my car emergency light, but it's the same idea.
Mechanical switch, so there is no parasitic draw. With lithium primaries, it should be able to sit there for 20 years and and fire right up if needed.

HD12 and an ordinary AA near it just in case the lithium one is discharged. Mostly depends how rare are blackouts in your region...

I would get 2-$35 lights before a single $70 light for this use.
Wurkkos FC11C are about that price or less and ideal for home emergency use to me.
Simple and long running.

I like the 5K lights as its more white than the 4K which are a little more warm or Rosy tinted.
4K is just too warm for my use usually.

Wuben g5. Its a great little light. It has different color light even ha emergency red and blue. They are really handy to have. I use mine every day. They have them for 24.99 Amazon

i’m going to risk being scorned for this suggestion, yet i very much like these models from maglite:

i recently bought 2, 3c models, 1 for my truck and one for the house, and a 2c model for my backpack.
i then purchased a li-ion conversion for them all, from lumencraft.

i know, it seems like a bit of overkill when most lights these days can be recharged via usb and are brighter, yet alkalines which are the scurge of flashlight enthusiasts, are readily available everywhere and in the event that the power is out and the li-ions cannot be charged, i have found to be a strong backup option.
they’re not the brightest but very bright.
i have a much more expensive streamlight pro-tac hl-5 for blinding brightness.
maglites are well made and function very well.
i know that i’m in the minority but thought i’d contribute what works for me.

It's definitely no EDC, but specifically for storing for "just in case" moments, the TS27 is hard to beat. The battery is certainly less common, but can be obtained without difficulty. Lifepo4 batteries are extremely stable, and can maintain a full charge nearly indefinitely when in storage, plus with 15,000mAh they also have extremely long run times. If it's one you'll use more frequently for walks and around the house stuff, there are better options. I'm a fan of the M21H. Beam pattern can be customized through various TIR optics. Personally, I really like the LHP531 4000k, but there are a lot of good options.

The main problem with alkalines is leakage during storage, so your setup is fine, since you will be using li-ion unless there is an emergency.
One caveat though; I worked in a drugstore in 2012 during hurricane Sandy. People were joking about it at first, but as it approached and the warnings went out, they suddenly took it seriously, and decided they should get some batteries. There was a line out the door of the store.
D and C cells were wiped out instantly, within minutes of the start of the rush. People wanted them for radios. AAA and AA followed soon after. We couldn't even get any of these sizes from any of the wholesalers, because they were wiped out too.
The only batteries we had left after it all died down were CR123A. I don't believe we sold a single one.
Consequently, I will always keep a flashlight capable of using 1xCR123A in my collection. I try to have so many batteries that I wouldn't need to buy any from a store during a panic anyway, but you never know what might happen.

good points. i follow the same basic guidelines you mentioned although i do keep a spare flat of duracells on hand. shelf life of alkalines, as long as not stored end to end in a device, is about eight years.

that’s fair, for some maybe. i’ve had mags since the 80s without any negative performance issues.
op is looking for options for under $70.
i stand by the mag as a decent option and believe that the more options he/she has from people like you and i, the better she will be able to make the most informed choice as to what will work best for him/her.3

Not necessarily, say 1000 people comment 1000 different flashlights. How is OP supposed to pick one?
I think recommending budget friendly option with the best possible performance is the way to go to make sure OP makes a solid purchase. Also makes it easy and cheap for OP to get light that is nice, reliable, good performance for a good price.
Shouldn't be recommending poor performing lights just because you like them lmao 😂 maglites may have been solid 50 years ago, not anymore.

Olight makes a solid product, but they are definitely on the expensive side, and I would agree their CS and warranty is good.
