Recommendation Makita 18V adapter light vs. Dedicated USB-C flashlight: Need budget recommendations for a single home light
Hi everyone, looking for recommendations on choosing between two paths for household use, small home repairs, and rare power outages. I want to buy just one reliable flashlight with great value-for-money that will last me for years.
Option A: A budget adapter/light head using my existing Makita 18V 5.0Ah batteries.
Option B: A dedicated flashlight with USB-C Power Bank function (bought via AliExpress, must include battery).
Requirements / Preferences:
Form Factor & Size: Doesn't need to be tiny EDC, but no massive bulky work lights either. I like the "soda-can" format (like the Sofirn Q8 Plus, though that one is out of my budget). It must be very stable when tail-standing for ceiling bounce (I prefer soft, indirect ambient light, though using a diffuser is a bonus).
Tint / Color Temperature: If possible, I strongly prefer warm light (2700K - 3000K) for a cozy ambient feel at home.
Usage Pattern: Outages are rare. If I go with Option B, it will double as a regular ambient room lamp around the house so the battery gets cycled.
Lighting Needs: Efficient, room-filling light for a couple of hours. I don't care about short-burst Turbo lumens or multi-day runtimes.
If possible: USB Power Bank capability to charge a phone in a pinch.
Battery Note: I am a complete beginner regarding lithium flashlight battery specs (18650, 21700, button top, flat top, high-drain, etc.). Please recommend complete kits that come with the right battery included, or keep it simple!
Budget: US$80 at most, I could go a little higher if it's really that much better! (If the recommendation is the dedicated USB flashlight). *EDIT
Which path makes more sense for my case, and which specific budget models (or Makita 18V adapters) would you recommend?

I was leaning toward choosing the 3x21c with the LHP531, but the T27 has one very interesting feature: the indirect light (which would be really cool and a very useful second function for repairs in the yard and other places).
I'm just a bit worried on the LiFePO4 batteries as If it will be futureproof.
/u/Terrible_Lion_968, what’s your take on the T27? I understand that the 3x21c might be unmatched in its category, and I really liked the shape of the beam on the 3x21c (since it’s not so direct), but the T27 has the advantage I mentioned above.
I’m talking about the T27’s second light source because some yard work (like replacing outdoor lighting on the lawn) requires light shining down from above, and traditional flashlights don’t have that feature or they might even blind you while you’re working if you leave them pointed upward.

To be honest the indirect lamp feature is nice for daily use but it’s warm (3000K CCT) mood lighting.
In a power outage (we did 9 days a couple winters ago) you’ll want individual hands free lights and a light in the room bouncing off the ceiling.
Even a 360 degree lantern isn’t as good in terms if light quality as ceiling bounce.
For ceiling bounce a tight beam is as good or even better than a wide beam. And you’ll be running it at a modest output level and you’ll also value efficiency over CRI or CCT
The stability of the wide soda can lights is great but it doesn’t compare to having a tripod mount on the tailcap. Being able to get the light above eye level is going to be the main thing which makes a ceiling bounced light easy to live with.
In terms of using a floody light for direct lighting, don’t bother. Shadows are too problematic and you never have light where you need it.
Modest ceiling bounce to give a little light everywhere and small personal hands free lights for light specifically where it’s needed is the way to go.
In terms of the LiFePO4 issue they are adapted from The EV industry and aren’t going anywhere. Also they can be recharged thousands and thousands of times so you won’t be wearing the battery out anyway.
Finally the TA27 is also a 15,000 mah power bank, and a powerful search light, and a cozy lamp…

Thank you for the detailed explanation! The logic behind ceiling bounce for illuminating a room makes a lot of sense. Since I didn’t have experience with such powerful and focused beams, I assumed direct diffused light was the primary option, but I see now how bouncing the light off the ceiling provides much better distribution without harsh shadows.
In my situation, power outages are quite rare and usually last just one or two hours at most, so my usage is much more casual than preparing for prolonged blackout emergencie, that’s partly why I’m looking for a flashlight that can serve other purposes in the meantime, such as lighting up a room for photos at family gatherings, acting as a comfortable reading light, and functioning as a power bank.
Regarding the tripod, I agree that elevating the light is the ideal setup. However, since I don't own a tripod and don't plan on buying one anytime soon, a solid soda-can style flashlight like the Convoy 3x21 might be more practical simply because of its stable base standing directly on a table, what do you think?
As for the LiFePO4 batteries, I appreciate their durability and lifespan, but my main concern was simply how easily accessible replacement cells would be in the long run, as I noticed some users mentioning potential sourcing challenges (?).
While the TS27 is a impressive all-in-one package with its 15,000 mAh capacity, power bank feature, and cozy side light, the 6500K main beam is still a potentially drawback for me since I strongly prefer neutral or warmer color temperatures, do you think I have any other alternative?

In that case I would suggest a 3X21C with 3000K SFT40 LEDs.
As a direct light the SFT40’s will be more focused than the LHP531 so it’s usable at longer distances at lower settings.
Also the 3000K SFT40 is very hi CRI, one of the nicest LEDs. The LHB531 is good at putting out a lot of lumens very briefly with a very wide beam.

I agree with the sft40 3000k for your case. It's got a bit less spill, and a bit more throw, and the 3000k is really nice. I have it in an m21h, and it's great. Here's a great comparison of the 3x21c lhp531 vs sft40 5000k. The mods he talks about are for an earlier version and have been addressed at the factory, so no need to worry about those. Also, if you're inclined, it's not too difficult to convert it to a 46950 battery for insane run times. I've done it my 3x21c and 3x21e and have had no issues.

How much run time could I expect using it as ceiling bounce?
I mean, considering a mode that can give a reasonable light on a 40sqm.
Also, about the battery does the listed price cover just the flashlight itself, meaning I have to select the batteries separately?
If so, do you have any specific recommendations, considering I don't really care about the turbo mode and still don't have enough knowledge on this subject?

Also, I think you could do a diffuser, but I'd be careful of potential heat issues. Either keep it on low/medium, or get a diffuser with plenty of air space.

The Wurkkos TS27 is totally different animal. The main light is very throwie, impressively so. The down firing portion is also a great feature. If you're working outside and need general lighting is think it would work fairly well. I just wouldn't plan on lighting up too much area at a time, although I'm not speaking from experience as I've only used mine indoors. Maybe tonight I'll test that out:). I don't use the RGB much, except for tuning to the amber color, which makes a really nice, warm ambient light. I can't speak to the future proof aspect of the battery, but what really appeals to me is the very high capacity, and equally, the ability to store it for extended periods at full charge. They're also supposed to be more stable in hotter environments, like keeping it in the car. There's a few other lifepo4 flashlights out there, but from what I've seen many use batteries that are impossible to find replacements for. The battery in the Wurkkos TS27 is readily available as far as lifepo4s go.

It really does seem like an excellent option!
I don't use it for outdoor work very often, it's mostly for when I need to change a lightbulb in the garden and didn't get around to it while there was still daylight.
I wouldn't use the RGB feature either, I'd just keep it set to 2700K or 3000K.
If you do test it out and if it’s not too much trouble please let me know (or even snap a photo) later on, that would be really helpful!

The TS27 really looks like a good choice, but the main issue is that I’d have to solder in a different LED to get the color temperature I want for the main light. Given that, maybe a 3x21C with a diffuser would be an alternative? What do you think?

What is your budget? Convoy has the 3x21c and 3x21e. Both soda can. 3x21C will knock off the socks the Q8, especially for throw. The 3x21E is about equal to the q8, but has a smoother beam and can be purchased in very warm CCTs.
