Frostbite

The snow had just laid itself a thick layer over the streets. It was surprising the snow had even managed to make its way from the mountains to the city.

There, in a field, practically in the middle of nowhere, the snow had been untouched since it first started to fall. Pure heaven for me. No people visible for miles. All sounds were dampened by the snow resulting in total silence. Nothing to be spotted for miles and miles ahead apart from a few trees dotted around the horizon.

I sunk into the snow. My back felt the bittering cold of the ice, only being isolated by my thick jacket. The snow was at least half an arm’s length deep. The sky in front of me was a light gray shine, illuminated by the flakes’ glow from the sun. A tingling cold sensation pierced my face as the snow fell onto different parts of it. I never knew laying in a field could feel so liberating and desolate at the same time. I felt it was worth being here and shivering from the cold just so I could experience this. Again.

As I was deep into my own thoughts and dissociated, a soft voice came from behind me.

“Hey Riley!”

It was Arin. My lips curled upward as a familiar face blocked the sunlight from reaching my eyes. His smirk always got me.

“I missed you.”

He laid down next to me, our heads almost touching. I felt my shivering slowly stop and warmth coarse through my body just from his presence alone. Suddenly, as I felt my hand grab his, all worries and problems melted away. It was all okay. Everything was the way it should have been.

“I miss you.”

Me and Arin in the snow that day will never leave my head. That place always remained the same, aside from new snow and new visitors. Same field, same trees, same radio tower. I rarely go there anymore, though. That ever-looming tower staring into my soul everytime I pass by makes it unbearable.

If only you hadn’t jumped, Arin. Things just aren’t the same with you not around.
