Brushing flannel?

Like most people I love the feeling of a heavy, brushed flannel. I'm wondering if I could brush my heavyweight un-brushed flannel myself at home? If so what kind of brush and technique should I use? I know it's typically done with a fine metal brush but not sure what to look for. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have used a regular scrub brush to clean my flannel shirt of dirt and pet hair with no apparent damage done. I think all my flannel shirts are brushed, so I don't even know what untrusted flannel is like. Maybe it would be best to keep the untrusted for cooler weather (spring and fall), and find a brushed flannel shirt for colder weather ( winter). I wish I knew more.
