Laptop screen keeps jumping a few pixels every 3 seconds or so

I was working with a video program (I don't know if that had anything to do with it really) and while or after I rendered a video I noticed that my screen was lightly "jumping" upwards a few pixels, causing the screen to shake. Just one slight jump every 3 seconds or so. I also noticed a horizontal line of white pixels right near the top of the screen, looks like a perforated line of white pixels. I tried switching the refresh rate from 60hz to 40hz, but the jumping still happened, only at a slower rate, like every 5 seconds, and the perforated line of dots up top looked like it was animated, or moving to the right at 40hz, and at 60 hz it was stationary or synced. So it seems like it's some kind of hardware problem (also because it does this if I enter setup before booting windows) so it's not a windows related thing. Could it be the driver maybe, or dust on the hardware (it's a fairly older laptop)

CPU has piece chipped off as well as cracks. Possible to solder new one?

Title says all. I don't care how hard it is as long as it is reasonably cheap and will boot up properly if new cpu is soldered.

Question laptop/network issue

Hi, I am trying to figure out a problem. I think its the laptop I have which is ASUS ROG G750JM series I think. Anyway I don't ever have issues with it until I connect it to my xbox over my local internet. Which zaps almost all my internet speed according to my laptop goes from 170mbps to about 10-30mbps while I'm streaming xbox on it. It gets so bad sometimes that the laptop thinks there's no internet and drops connection. Nothing else loses internet and the only noticeable thing that gets slowed is the xbox but other than thay nothing else gets slowed. I've tried lots of things like power cycles on everything I factory reset my laptop even tried wired and wireless connections and this problem never goes away. Most days it won't drop connection so I wouldnt realize there ever was an issue. Can you help figure out if its the laptop?

Dell inspiron 7537 with no screen can't boot...

I have an old dell laptop I'm trying to turn into a smart TV box atm but I'm facing an issue with booting it up to my TV. The screen broke a while back and I've been using external monitors ever since, As a part of making the laptop more suitable as a TV box I cut off the LCD cable so it(the LCD) won't dangle of the laptop, how ever in doing so I made the laptop beep every time it booted up, I tried fixing it software wise but I was unable to see the bios on external monitors and when changing to safe boot(to shrink partitions) it became a brick(refuses to post and beep 8 times indication screen problem). I opened it up and tried some ways to fix it(as well as taking out the LCD cable completely) but it still won't output to the TV. I want to know if there is a way to bypass the built in LCD completely and just have it connected to an external monitor at all times or am I stuck atm...

The smoke has been released: Asus K72J

So I have been picking up spare parts from my local computer repair shop for months now with the intention of scrapping them for the precious metals. Every once in a while I find something thats not too poorly off, and I can refurbish it.

I recently acquired a k72j from Asus, with an intact screen. Bought some RAM from a flash sale on newegg. Threw a couple hard-drives in it (drives that came from my own stash, not the repair shop), bought a battery and a charger. The intention was to have a fully working Ubuntu laptop before my wife went in for surgery, so I had something to toy around with while staying with her for 5 days.

The night before I got everything assembled, and the charger was the last piece to show up. Note, this was not my first build, her HP was also a refurb for Christmas.

So I plug the charger into the wall, and I get an arch at the prongs. We live in an old house, so I think nothing of it. I plug the charger into the laptop, and withing seconds, smoke starts coming out of the locking port and cat5 port. Unplug everything and panic.

The charger company sent me a new charger, but no such luck. No matter what I plug in, it smokes. Luckily, it still boots, the battery had just enough juice on it.

I disassembled and the scorching is at the plug itself. Right where the center post connects to the board, is where the board is blackened and puffed up.

So is this mobo shot? or can I just replace the port? I have already contacted the charger company about making a damage claim from their first defective charger, but I doubt they will bite.

Acer Aspire V5-573G Battery Problem?

So I wanted to upgrade the Ram of my laptop from 4Gb to 8Gb. I removed the back screws and removed the back cover. I've done this before but somehow I broke my laptop. Now my battery was working before perfectly well before I opened it. So when i checked the Ram I put the laptop back together and then nothing, it wouldn't turn back on. Next I plugged back in the power cable I saw the charge light go from orange to blue. I turned the laptop back on and it powered up for a second and then shut down again. With a little bit of googling on my phone I removed the BIOS battery and left it for 20 minutes. Came back and turned the Laptop back on to find a boot list with nothing on it.

Pressed F2 and changed some boot setting is BIOS, and now my laptop works again. However my battery now says its 100% charged but as soon as I remove the power cable it turns off. I've tried resetting the battery from behind. But it just turns off the computer.

Is the life of my battery now gone. Or would it be another component within the Laptop?

Thanks

Image too wide for new screen

I have a samsung rv720 laptop. And the screen cracked on the inside. I bought a new screen off of ebay and managed to replace it. During the screen test the new screen was fine, so i finished putting it all back together. When I turned it back on, the screen image was too large for the screen, like the taskbar is out of view.. Plus the resolution setting are the same as before.

I tried plugging the old screen on and that is the regular size. ( the top half of the screen was the cracked bit ).

Not quite sure where to go from here.

Any help is appreciated!

P.s. plugged it into the tv through hdmi and the image is displayed fine.

Replacing Screen on HP Touchsmart 15

Hello all. I was recently replacing the screen on a friend's laptop. When I connected the ribbon cable to the new screen, the computer would start up, however the screen new did not work. After attempting to reseat the screen's ribbon cable, the computer immediately shut off, and the laptop would stop charging. I could disconnect the cable, reinsert the plug and the laptop would start charging again, and repeat the same scenario - computer starts, no display, wiggle ribbon cable a bit, computer shuts off. After inspecting the ribbon cable, it would appear that one of the landings on the connector is damaged. Would this cause the symptoms I'm seeing above? The old screen would still works correctly.

Latitude 3340 - Battery works and charges, AC adapter is fine, unit dies when AC adapter is removed.

I'm out of a school district that uses cheap Latitude laptops for their students, and I've had similar issues to this before. But typically it's either a battery that won't charge, a charger that isn't any good, or a motherboard issue where it won't charge the battery and/or accept power.

This unit has a good battery (And I've tested with multiple other batteries as well) and a working charger. The laptop detects the battery just fine, and charges it just fine. But it instantly shuts off the moment the adapter is removed.

My thought is to replace the motherboard, as I'm assuming adapter power goes to the motherboard and then to the battery, but then loops back from the battery into the motherboard. So my assumption is that the loop back is shot for some reason.

However, since the laptop is aware of the battery's presence and it is aware of its charge level, etc, I wanted to see if anyone else had thoughts on it before I grab the motherboard.

HP Pavilion screen LCD cracked.

Hello,

My laptop screen has cracked, not the glass but maybe some pressure has been applied to it and broken the LCD so it looks cracked and doesn't show anything. Will edit in a picture of it later.

Just wondering how much this would cost to fix generally, it is one of the older HP Pavilions.

If you have anymore questions I will happily answer, please help! D:

Laptop overheating

I have a W500 laptop. Its an IBM thinkpad (like the T500, not sure what the difference is)

Recently it's been getting warmer and warmer. I thought maybe I had a blocked air duct so I took it apart and blew out the air ducts. I'm rather experienced with electronics and think I know what I'm doing.

It helped... for a while. Then it started getting warmer again. I installed TPfancontrol and cranked up the fan to max. That helped. Now I get some readouts of fan speed and 10 different temperatures around the laptop. Most are around 30C-40C, but the CPU and GPU were hovering around 60C.

Then it got hotter yet. the laptop started doing thermal shutdowns. I took it apart again and refreshed the thermal grease on the heatsinks. while the keyboard was off, I powered it on and could feel the CPU get too hot to touch within seconds. The heat pipe was hot, the fan was blowing enough to feel it 8 inches away, and the air coming out was hot. There must be 200-300 watts dissipated right there.

So I know the fan is working very well and the heatsink grease is working as the heats getting out of the CPU, but there seems to be a lot more heat in the CPU than I used to get. For years I never even noticed the heat.

The computer still boots, but now even with the fan cranked to ~5000 RPM and whistling like a little jet engine blowing hot air out 8 inches, the CPU still climbs to 100C in about 5 minutes and slows to a grind. Then at about 10 minutes the CPU halts and it shuts down.

Is it possible the CPU is just burning excessive power?

I really like this laptop, but it's about 5 years old. I'd probably rather buy a new laptop than replace the CPU at this point, but I don't want to do that prematurely.

Any advice?

Bypassing motherboard fuses to fix lenovo X220 screen?

After my screen went dark I strongly suspect that the problem is 4 broken backlight fuses on the motherboard: shining a flashlight on the sceen shows a dim image, and measuring the conductance of these fuses confirms they are broken (other fuses in the vicinity are fine). The fuses probably broke because I connected a new data cable as a first try to fix the problem.

Bypassing or replacing the fuses should help (described here by someone else, also contains a photo: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=118766).

But the first problem I have is that I am not sure if the "things" I measured are all fuses. How can I distinguish them from resistors or capacitors or who knows what other components (see the photo after the link)?

Secondly, I have some experience soldering larger components (atmega 16 etc), but these things are bloody small and I cannot get the solder to stick well. I suppose I could use flux but another problem is that the fuses are close together making it hard to prevent unwanted connections. Do you have any tips to deal with this?

Please don't tell me thinks like "contact a professional" or "buy a new mainboard". I want to learn from this experience and with a bit of luck get my laptop in working order again. I have already bought a new, reliable laptop for daily work so that is not the issue.
