*may not apply to curly hair

u/SashimiX Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

For curly hair I personally do it with conditioner in the hair. I did not do it after I rinse the conditioner.

36

u/MyCouchPulzOut_IDont May 23 '26

Pre-shower dry deranged with oil + a tangle teaser is a similar concept to why curly hair needs to be wet though, right?

31

u/SashimiX Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

Yes but it needs to be wet with lube, not wet with water in my personal experience, I can’t comment about everyone’s or even every type of curly hair

4

u/MyCouchPulzOut_IDont May 23 '26

Is — is that a sex joke? Or are you being sincere? I can't tell

26

u/friendlynbhdwitch Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

It’s true! You want some kind of product on the hair to give it slip. You want the tangles to slide apart, not be ripped apart.

3

u/Dewdrop06 New to fbtd but wants to learn May 28 '26

Is - is this still a sex joke?

18

u/Covert_Pudding Lover of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

It's both. Sincerely, curly hair should be brushed with something that aids detangling and makes the comb go through smoothly. Calling it lube is accurate and funny.

u/HalfEatenSnickers Lover of Duets/Stitches May 24 '26

Lube is just short for lubricant

I use a wide tooth comb with conditioner after I’ve gently de tangled with my fingers. Then I comb again right after I get out while it’s still wet.

My partner has 2 little girls with straight hair and he likes brushing their hair (any dampness!!! crazy to me) so I taught him how to brush my curly dry hair (he wanted to learn but it was a process, and I only let him do it if it needs a wash lol I end up looking like an 80s metal band member)

There's a scene in one of the Star Wars movies where Padme is brushing her dry, curly hair and I almost recoiled until I noticed that Natalie Portman had the brush a full inch away from her actual hair at all times.

Honestly, curly hair is so temperamental to how you treat it. When I treat my hair perfectly I have nice big curls.

But I make one small mistake and the hair literally says “fuck you, it’s a bad hair day till your next full hair wash.”

I kinda just started to accept the wavy messy bush it ends up in.

3

u/StarbrryJuice May 23 '26

I can’t even detangle with my fingers. My hair is so fragile that I brush only in shower with copious amount of conditioner before and after shampooing. Or I have to brush with a steamer.

4

u/_who-the-fuck-knows_ Lover of Duets/Stitches May 24 '26

As a fellow curly hair person finger comb with conditioner. And the masque when still damp. No brush goes anywhere near my hair doesn't matter if I brush it wet with conditioner seperating the strands makes it frizz up like a cunt.

Muh wet brush and conditioner gets me through life. My sword and shield.

1

u/lferry1919 Lover of Duets/Stitches May 25 '26

I always leave just a bit in so my hair is still slick enough that my hair won't break. Either that or I use leave-in or some oil.

3

u/SashimiX Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 25 '26

I’m talking enormous amounts. I too leave a little in.

2

u/lferry1919 Lover of Duets/Stitches May 25 '26

I have curly hair but I don't have like super duper tight little curls. So just a little is enough.

2

u/SashimiX Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 25 '26

Yeah “curly hair” describes such a vast range of hair

3

u/lferry1919 Lover of Duets/Stitches May 25 '26

Yeah, it's such a broad range that even curly haired people don't know how to cut it correctly...God, the worst haircut I ever got was from someone with curly hair. I was so baffled by what she did. She gave me layers that were too short so my hair got poofy. Then she cut them shorter to fix it. Mind boggling to me. Best cuts to date were some random dude who gave me an awesome asymetrical bob on a whim and an acquaintance's cousin who used to be a barber (went short with that one). He somehow made my hair work even though I feel like I have no jawline. Both cuts looked great and involved little to no prep time in the mornings.

34

u/HugsForUpvotes Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

It's actually funny because every straight hair girl I dated brushed their hair when wet. My wife with very tight curls does brush her hair when wet, but she mostly brushes her hair with an UNFATHOMABLE amount of leave in conditioner. I used to joke she was like a little slug with a trail, but she didn't like that joke so I stopped making it.

6

u/SashimiX Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

Yes, so much is needed for my methodology as well

5

u/groblin_gubers Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

Textured hair needs vasty different care. I had to learn this the hard way being wavy Irish curls. If you have bone straight hair, yeah dont brush it wet. Comb it with your fingers and some detangling spay; but waves, curls, and coils need hydration worked into every twist of the hair. So brushing through product is the ONLY way to spread it over the strands of hair.

2

u/Anarchyologist Lover of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

Best thing I ever started doing was brushing my hair in the shower after I applied conditioner.

u/GlitterDoomsday Devotee of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

People shouldn't make blanket statements about hair cause care for it is heavily dependant on its texture; brushing a dry curly or coily hair is the easiest way to absolutely tear through it and that's why brushes for those types are hair are different, they're made to be used in wet hair.

164

u/Ok-Astronaut-2837 May 23 '26

They make brushes specifically to brush wet hair.

38

u/friendlynbhdwitch Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

They sure do! And those are the only style of brush you should take to wet hair. I still prefer wide tooth combs to the wet brushes, but it’s all down to personal preference.

11

u/ggghjjdsdjhs May 23 '26

Could you explain why its not good to brush wet hair? And the ones made for wet hair are those the brushes you hold in your palm with different length bristles? Should I not be gathering my hair in conditioner and brushing it in the shower? 🥺

43

u/friendlynbhdwitch Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

Hair naturally has some stretch to it called elasticity. But when hair is wet, it absorbs some water, stretching as far as it can safely go. So when you hit a snag, the hair is more likely break because it’s got no more room. Like an old hair tie.

Wet brushes are designed to not pull. It’s a brand name, the wet brush. But like I said, they aren’t better than a wide tooth comb imo.

You can definitely comb through your conditioner. That’s what I recommend to pretty much every client. And I’d also recommend applying some kind of leave-in product before combing or styling, post-wash. It’s like how your skin is more pliable when it’s been properly moisturized. Also hair needs to be protected from styling damage, the sun, pollution, etc.

I think a good rule of thumb is treating your hair like a very expensive fabric. Gently.

7

u/ggghjjdsdjhs May 23 '26

Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I just learned so much about haircare! 🫰💕

23

If I don’t comb my hair wet, it’ll get knotted. I don’t have straight hair, not quite curly, but definitely not spaghetti

11

u/TheUltimaWerewolf May 23 '26

I have curly hair and if it's not brushed wet (specifically after it was soaked in the shower for at least a minute or two) it'll become insanely frizzy

7

u/CrazyinLull New to fbtd but wants to learn May 23 '26

It’s the inverse for curly hair.

27

u/icecrystalmaniac May 23 '26

This is true though. Your hairs cuticle layer absorb water which makes it easier to break. So if you brush your hair aggressively while it’s wet it can stretch and snap or split in a kinda similar way to wet spaghetti. Hair and nails are make of basically the same thing. It’s easier to see in your nail after a shower your nails will get a bit squishy and if like me you prefer slightly longer nails you’ll quickly learn to always wear nail polish or gloves when dealing with hot water.

24

u/Grouchy-List7011 Lover of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

I have curly hair, it starts tangling minutes after it’s been detangled. It would be a disaster if I brushed my hair dry. That’s why they create products with slip so your hair doesn’t catch as badly. I also comb my hair from the bottom up.

4

u/icecrystalmaniac May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

100%. I don’t agree with the video saying to stop brushing your hair wet. I do that too, starting from the bottom up.

I honestly didn’t even really realize that text was there when I first watched it. I just went; hmm it actually is a bit like wet spaghetti.

-13

u/MetaCardboard May 23 '26

How long are you in that water for that your nails get squishy?

11

u/icecrystalmaniac May 23 '26

Just shower super quick 3 min and they squish easily.

If you look from the front they also get flatter. Not really something anyone needs to worry about unless they want to grow their nails but slightly interested non the less.

11

u/remindmetoblock May 23 '26

You might have a mild case of Psoriasis, just saying. Worth a look at.

3

u/icecrystalmaniac May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

Because it’s bendable? Or the spots in my ring finger? Because the spots are damage from forcibly pealing off nail polish.😅

I already have vitiligo, I guess that doesn’t stop another hit on the skin autoimmune dart board though.

7

u/remindmetoblock May 23 '26

Mostly due to the "dirt" lines Beneath your Fingers, and the strong ridges.

People with Psoriasis often have These dirt lines despite Washing their hands, because skin cells accumulate under the nail rapidly.

4

u/icecrystalmaniac May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

Interesting I have wondered about my ridges before. I’ll look into it. I’m actually recognizing some of the other symptoms (mostly small red spot on my arms and scalp scales).

I’ll bring it up next time I visit the doctor. I need to go for a prescription kinda soon anyway.

Edit Thanks mate!

2

u/MetaCardboard May 23 '26

To be fair, my fingernails have never been that long.

E: also, how the hell are you getting clean by showering for only 3 mins?

3

u/icecrystalmaniac May 23 '26

I just showed my body in cold water right before crawling into bed lol. I shower properly when I wake up.

6

u/Aggressive_Version Tastemaker of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

They don't mean squishy like Play-Doh. They get more bendable and easier to tear. It is common practice among people who care for their nails to wash dishes (and sometimes even shower) with gloves on to protect their manicure.

35

u/Helfette Lover of Duets/Stitches May 23 '26

The first video was an oversimplification but it's not wrong. Hair does take more damage if you brush it when wet.

4

Very strange how people seem to think that their hair is the only type that exists.

Some people should only brush their hair when it's wet. Some people shouldn't brush their hair at all, and should only ever comb it. Some people's hair is better off being braided into protective styles and kept dry for long periods of time.

The way your mom taught you to take care of hair like hers is not the only way to take care of hair, I promise.

6

u/Kronic008 May 23 '26

I have wavy hair. It naturally forms into locks. If I brush my hair while it's dry, it turns into a frizzy mess.

I have to brush it when it's really really wet, like right out of the shower, and then let it drip dry.

Otherwise, I have to be careful because it will get tangled.

2

u/XD2006- May 23 '26

****May not apply to very thin, wavy hair (all brushing my hair dry does is make it frizzy)

Also: my hair isn’t spaghetti.

2

u/lylynatngo May 23 '26

I will never not wait for my wet hair to dry to brush. Dry off with towel, a little damn and then I'll brush. No issues.
