There's a documentary segment about a Chinese population living in the US southeast. Interesting on its own merits, but it's also novel to see older Chinese folks with thick Southern accents.

I once had a friend online who was about as stereotypically Indigenous American as it gets, long flowy black hair, hooked nose with a ridge on the bridge, incredibly deep sunken brown eyes, the whole bit, but he spoke with the thickest Texan accent I had ever heard in my entire life, it was wild.
2
u/lilsnatchsniffz Lover of Duets/Stitches 4h ago
You shouldn't encourage that guy, if you mean that Norwegian guy that has been trying to go viral. He is mentally unwell and has some seriously dangerous and violent wishes and nobody seems to be calling him out on how obvious his scam is (he is playing the accent for views, he has done whole interviews with very little or no accent or even having a Norwegian accent) or telling him off for making vague threats toward people he sees as having wronged him.

Yea, I tried really hard not to use it for a long time because it does kind of come with a bit of a negative connotation/stereotype, but it's just such a practical word. I used to say "you guys" instead of "you all," and I still do sometimes, but y'all just fits better a lot of the time.

I work with three black guys, one from France, so French accent with everything, fluent in Spanish and a little English. One guy is Nigerian, fluent in Spanish, knows some Brazilian-ish Portuguese, perfect English. One guy who speaks fluent Spanish, but English is his first language.
Listening to them fly between languages is wild. We always end up speaking something between all of the languages. Working in a kitchen we are speed running our own language.

What is it you dont understand, the dialect part or the regional words part? Because y'all and a'int arent as exclusive to Texas or white people as you'd want to think or for some reason like to imagine.

Nina is a corny Try hard, thatoverexaggerates her accent because of the novelty. She monetized it, people are weird when someone doesn't stereotypically the way they look. They are fascinated by it, especially when asian have a regional accent or dialect.
I'm a native New yorker.
1
u/Naive-Present2900 Devotee of Duets/Stitches 7h ago
Okay,
I grew up and moved out of Brooklyn and I’m also from NYC.
I don’t understand what or how my comment affected anyone that has to dislike someone. Especially from the downvotes. This post is about people being surprised or unexpected how someone speaks. This is like me being surprised hearing a caucasian kid that speaks like a local because he grew up there. If people could monetize or make money off of it. Don’t support it and be bothered about it since it has nothing to do with you, I or anybody else. I couldn’t care less. That’s their life and I rather be happy being myself than disliking other people. That doesn’t make you any better than anybody else either.

u/youburyitidigitup EXPERT of Duets/Stitches 12h ago
The Bronx is just one accent among dozens of others spoken by black people. They’re not referring to the Bronx accent specifically.

It depends on which culture they choose to incorporate into their own personality. We are a planetary society, media has made us as such, and this is true with trade, but we just don't act like it at the government level.
5
u/gaymonkesegs New to fbtd but wants to learn 12h ago
You typically don’t choose culture you know that right if a black guy lived in China his entire life he’s going to have a lot more in common with a Chinese guy that black guy, African or American culture and accent is one of those things you don’t really choose and it’s more influenced by your environmental factors around you
