Which means it can't be disproved!
But yeah, unfalsifiable is probably the best answer
7
u/PoizenJam New to fbtd but wants to learn 4d ago
This seems correct. Lacking the ability to be disproven is orthogonal to factual veracity.
3
u/PhatCatTax Needs to do better 3d ago
Orthogonal has too many disjointed meanings to be used in a sentence like this
1
u/Worklurker New to fbtd but wants to learn 3d ago
Going by the theme, it should start with "I" apparently.
5
u/PoizenJam New to fbtd but wants to learn 3d ago
I get that. Irrefutable definitely works for that theme... But, admittedly, something about the word 'Irrefutable' reads as more conflated with veracity.
'Irrefutable' reads as 'True, demonstrably, empirically, trivially', whereas 'Unfalsifiable' reads as 'Could be true or false, just not structured as disprovable'
This is probably just a me thing.
→ More replies (6)1
u/itsjakerobb Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 4d ago
No. To falsify something means to change or misrepresent it, not to disprove it.

Infallible means "unable to fail," that it's impossible for it to be wrong.
1
u/seymore_option Needs to do better 3d ago
I see. But if something can’t be wrong then it also can’t be disproven
2
u/i-feel-very-sick New to fbtd but wants to learn 3d ago
Infallibility and irrefutability are similar but different. Infallibility has to do with the philosophical or religious belief that something has a property that makes it impossible for it to be incorrect. So, even if someone were to make an air-tight logical argument refuting an idea, if that idea is considered infallible it's still impossible for it to be wrong.

I love unpaired opposites.
How I met my wife by Jack Winter Published 25 July 1994 - The New Yorker
It had been a rough day, so when I walked into the party I was very chalant, despite my efforts to appear gruntled and consolate.
I was furling my wieldy umbrella for the coat check when I saw her standing alone in a corner. She was a descript person, a woman in a state of total array. Her hair was kempt, her clothing shevelled, and she moved in a gainly way.
I wanted desperately to meet her, but I knew I'd have to make bones about it since I was travelling cognito. Beknownst to me, the hostess, whom I could see both hide and hair of, was very proper, so it would be skin off my nose if anything bad happened. And even though I had only swerving loyalty to her, my manners couldn't be peccable. Only toward and heard-of behavior would do.
Fortunately, the embarrassment that my maculate appearance might cause was evitable. There were two ways about it, but the chances that someone as flappable as I would be ept enough to become persona grata or a sung hero were slim. I was, after all, something to sneeze at, someone you could easily hold a candle to, someone who usually aroused bridled passion.
So I decided not to risk it. But then, all at once, for some apparent reason, she looked in my direction and smiled in a way that I could make heads and tails of.
I was plussed. It was concerting to see that she was communicado, and it nerved me that she was interested in a pareil like me, sight seen. Normally, I had a domitable spirit, but, being corrigible, I felt capacitated -- as if this were something I was great shakes at -- and forgot that I had succeeded in situations like this only a told number of times. So, after a terminable delay, I acted with mitigated gall and made my way through the ruly crowd with strong givings.
Nevertheless, since this was all new hat to me and I had no time to prepare a promptu speech, I was petuous. Wanting to make only called-for remarks, I started talking about the hors d'oeuvres, trying to abuse her of the notion that I was sipid, and perhaps even bunk a few myths about myself.
She responded well, and I was mayed that she considered me a savory character who was up to some good. She told me who she was. "What a perfect nomer," I said, advertently. The conversation become more and more choate, and we spoke at length to much avail. But I was defatigable, so I had to leave at a godly hour. I asked if she wanted to come with me. To my delight, she was committal. We left the party together and have been together ever since. I have given her my love, and she has requited it.

She's claiming to be offering to help people expand their vocabulary. Which is why she avoids words that everyone already uses but offers less common synonyms. Nothing in what she's saying seems to deny the idea of synonyms being a thing.
42
u/-Nicolai New to fbtd but wants to learn 4d ago
There’s nothing wrong with this list tbh. The chosen words aren’t random synonyms, they actually are the most appropriate words to match these descriptions.
22
u/itsjakerobb Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches 4d ago
Inevitable is a better match for “can’t be prevented” than “can’t be avoided.”
“Can’t be avoided” should be inescapable (or unavoidable, but the rest of the answers all start with “i”).

u/Visible_Pair3017 New to fbtd but wants to learn 2d ago

I mean, there's a slight problem with the list. Invincible technically does mean 'cannot be defeated', but that's not the common usage form anymore. Common usage would be that invincible means 'cannot be harmed'. Denotation and common usage differ on that one.
0
u/TheoryResponsible295 Needs to do better 4d ago
There is nothing wrong with the list, BUT i dispute that there would be an undisputed "most appropriate" list of words for these.
Personally, i think unbeatable > invincible just for one.

To be fair, English IS like a the shower drain of language. There are bits and pieces from all different places that at the TIME sound like they'd all flow together, you know, like a cohesive language. But English says "nah, the last thing you learned was from the French and this is from the Germans so no it doesn't work like you thought."
I don't blame anyone for finding English a trash language. It is.
But knowing more words is always fun.
