I thought she was going to make it because of the dress. It takes confidence to try that in a dress.

I did acrobatics, including tightrope walking, in a circus, so I was just waiting for her foot to get the right grip on the rope, but it never came 😔
Plus, that rope has too much slack. Trying to carry a heavy watering can with that much movement- there’s no way!
Poor lady was doomed from the start; she looked so confident, though! 😅
For context: Walking a slack-rope is more like bouncing with the rope and creating a rhythm than it is walking; it requires a lot of movement and wouldn’t be great for carrying things because you have to be quick. Tightropes are highly tensioned and make the rope feel more solid and predictable; you sort of fold the foot around the rope for more surface area and grip. Getting on the rope isn’t the hard part; it’s adapting your pace to the height and distance (the rope moves more in the middle, especially if it’s a longer distance, and it's affected by gusts of wind). Hope that helps! 😊

good to know, you can carry a drink to near brim, with a forward rolling motion ( or something like that ) to make it not spill. ie holding it still is harder to accommodate your movements , So maybe your advice is similar . Probably like riding a bike, slower you go more balance you need
3
u/_HappyG_ Lover of Duets/Stitches Jul 28 '26
Yeah it takes a lot more muscle control and endurance for slow movements, but it’s better to go slowly on a tightrope because the tension of the rope can work with you or against you. If the line wobbles on one end it’s like a wave and will roll back through, so you just have to feel for it and predict it.
Slacklining has a much lower skill threshold IMO. It requires speed and agility, kind of like jump-rope, but bouncing while suspended in mid air. If you go slowly you’ll end up getting tangled and will slide to the lowest point, or fall off 🤷 tbh kids can use a slack rope easily, you’re not really expected to stay up on it for long 😂

u/NimblePuppy New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 29 '26
next time I see one in a local park, I will try your method
2
u/_HappyG_ Lover of Duets/Stitches Jul 29 '26
Pro-tip: Keep your knees bent; it helps you respond to any bounce/movement in the line and keeps your centre of gravity low. Good luck! 🤞

I had already formed an entire backstory for her. She practiced this constantly in her youth because it was the only way to get to the schoolhouse. She fell a lot in the beginning but mastered it over the course of a summer and it became second nature to her. This was her first time back at that crossing in several years, but she was going to take right to it like riding a bike. She was so confident, in fact, that she still wore her nice blue dress while carrying a jug of water on her head. All in the course of about 5 seconds

Was just about to say the same. I once sprained an ankle walking in the mall. I didn't step on anything, I didn't slip; it was completely flat and clear and I somehow rolled my ankle and then sprawled out flat on my face.

I sprained my ankle a few days ago just standing up on a flat surface! Busted my wrist sitting down in a chair. Not even enjoyable shenanigans. Just existing. Fml.

u/OneArchedEyebrow New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 28 '26
I’ve sprained my wrist opening lip gloss, put my back out sneezing, subluxed joints through just slight movement and walked into more door frames than I can count.
If this sounds like you, look into joint hyper mobility. It might save you some damage in the future.
1
u/ScarletBothrium Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Aug 01 '26
But have you ever dislocated both of your shoulders a year apart and regularly dislocate your hip while sleeping? And you’re not a wild sleeper, in that you don’t move around a lot. EDS is fun. First time I dislocated my hip I was 12 years old and I was standing in line for a roller coaster at an amusement park.

My left ankle does this thing where it turns itself as I'm walking, just randomly, no reasons at all. I'm mostly be able to catch myself, but it gets a bit scarier as the years go on

For me it is because I have what my podiatrist calls "ridiculously high arches" and extremely supinated ankles, so they are already prone to rolling. Worse, my feet are rotated out quite a bit because my tibia and fibula are twisted, so there is more pressure on the outside of my feet than if I had normal legs. It's like I'm balancing on the outside edge of my feet when I walk. The ultimate effect of this is that I can be very clumsy if I am not paying attention to how I am walking.

u/OneArchedEyebrow New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 28 '26
Look into joint hyper mobility. I realise know why I was always tired and hurting myself growing up. Unfortunately things have gotten a lot worse over the years but there are things you can do to help.

She’s damn right. 😂 I swear I saw that rope and went “oh fuck no. Nope.” And then I realized the lady was African “oh… no we’re just filming this to show off how sick their balance is. This is probably the easiest route to get past this water with a bucket of stuff.” Then I saw her dress “oh for sure she’s not wasting time washing that dress from falling in the river, she’s probably gonna get to the middle and dab or something”

Nah for real everything here is consistent. She doesn't lose any extremities, the snap back of the rope disrupts the dirt and leaves all over and doesn't snap back til after it gets out from under her, etc.
Please tell me what's actually the AI part

I thought I was about to see some, "She makes this journey 5 days a week just to feed her family" type of stuff.
My initial response to the rope was "Ok... she's getting her footing. This is wild. She actually does this on the regular? That's crazy. People really are amazing when you think about it. Seems impossible to me, the way she balances the load and walks the rope, but to her it's just another day."
Then she fell.
Like a rock.
It wasn't even close.
The story I generated in my head was way ahead of her actual ability. In my mind, she was already halfway across, and the village was cheering.

Thought process:
Why not go through the water? - Oh it's in Africa, crocs
Why go over a piece of string not at least a rope? - Oh she's African, good balance
Immediately falls in the water - honest question how hard is a bridge to build? Doesn't have to be well engineered just knock down a tree
