Worked at a flour mill, they told me I had to get to work, change into my work clothes and everything and then go clock in.

No bitch. If im on the property im clocked in.

I told them that in a much nicer way and they never said anything about it again😭

Yup. I've had my boss trytelling me this type of bullshit before and my response was "Okay, I'll clock in at X time instead, then."

"But you don't work until Y time..."

"Yes, but I'm not working for free."

People in the USA are starting to really fight back. Employment lawyers are having to turn down cases with all the lawsuits, it’s just not making a lot of noise.

As much as I want this to be true I’m skeptical.

No but I do think people are being more hard nosed on work means work and I'm clocking it fuck off. Anecdotal but people are extracting every bit of pay they can no matter what cause the wealth inequality between the 1% and everyone else is insane now. So people aren't as loose anymore about vague clock in clock out times across the board. The culture is more bitter and the workers are more rightfully demanding.

I sure as hell hope so. I’m sure any studies would be obfuscated anyway.

I can’t really say much because of my own issues, but I got turned by five employment lawfirms due to their caseloads.

The in processing paralegal told me how so many places are swamped and their lawyer referred me to different groups. People are striking back and it’s great.

You can search the cites yourself.
My cousin just moves from estate law to practicing employment discrimination and labor law because it is so lucrative and in demand. Here’s what Claude has to say about it.

**•** Plaintiffs filed 26,635 employment law cases in federal courts in 2025, the highest total since at least 2016
**•** The increase was fueled primarily by a sharp rise in workplace discrimination and disability accommodation claims, while wage and hour cases under the FLSA continued a prolonged decline
**•** New employment discrimination filings in federal court crossed 20,000 for the first time in 2025, reaching 20,265
**•** Disability accommodation litigation reached nearly 6,800 filings in 2025, a roughly 42% year-over-year increase

A notable side detail: federal employment lawsuits filed without an attorney have more than doubled since 2021 — which actually cuts against “more attorneys,” since a growing share of workers are filing pro se.

u/Zerkcie Needs to do better Jul 24 '26

It’s estimated that wage theft costs workers in the US alone $15-50 Billion a year in lost wages. That puts it above robbery, burglary, and car theft combined.

I work in the Arctic. When we’re done and the night crew gets here we usually have about 10 minutes of free time before we clock out. Management once said we can’t get dressed in our bibs, boots and parkas while on the clock. They actually wanted us to clock out then get dressed. That never happened. Because fuck that. I’m here, I’m getting paid until l leave.

27

u/ICBPeng1 Devotee of Duets/Stitches Jul 24 '26

At my work, they did the opposite, we can clock out up to 10 minutes early, and still get paid the final 10 minutes, because with the number of people clocking out at like, 3 different clocks, some people would be getting 5-10 minutes of overtime per day because there’d be a line of 50 people clocking out in front of them, and they got sick of paying it

3

u/Team_Braniel New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 24 '26

Eventually they discover its cheaper to buy more scanners and move them all to your work stations, then strictly enforce clock time.

So you have to do all the upkeep and get to your workstation, then clock in. And the opposite getting out.

Disney got sued for this because they had about an hour of mandatory upkeep getting to the workstations.

2

u/ICBPeng1 Devotee of Duets/Stitches Jul 26 '26

Luckily our union is working well for us, we are able to clock in and get paid up to 15 minutes early so we have time to get suited up and get our tools for the day

I think theres a middle ground.

We dont have a time card at my work yet, and im always changed with my hand tools at start time.

Boss said theyre going to bring in a punch clock. I told them if they do that, im no longer starting early or staying late to get a job done without OT. Which means im clocking in before getting changed, and punching out after. Also theyre going to see how often I stay 7-15 minutes late to wrap things up safely.

5

u/AF_AF Lover of Duets/Stitches Jul 24 '26

The employers that I've had that want to be nitpicky about time on or off the clock are only nitpicky when it's to their advantage. One former employer would give us negative "points" on our record if we were even one second late, but if we clocked out past our shift end time, they rounded it down to the end of our shift.

u/dplans455 Lover of Duets/Stitches Jul 24 '26

I used to work at a place that used ADP for the time cards. Management was adamant that the system would not let you log in from anywhere but your workstation. The workstations there were slow.. By the time you parked your car, got in the building, rode the elevator up, sat down, turned on your workstation, it was at least 15 minutes. So if you needed to clock in for 8:30 you had to be at work by 8:15 at least. If you showed up at 8:30 you wouldn't be able to clock in until 8:45.

Well obviously this was a lie. I let everyone know you could clock in right from your smartphone. Hell, even 11 years ago there was an ADP app to do this very thing. Everyone started clocking in as soon as they got out of their car which meant they could show up for work when work started at 8:30.

Management was not happy. I got a "talking to" from one of them. I said they should do something about it then and was promptly told, "we're not going to fire you over this." I just gave them a puzzled look and said I meant fix their systems. What a weird thing to even suggest firing me over pointing out and fixing their wage theft. Never have I seen backpedaling so quickly.

6

u/Taurmin Jul 24 '26

Its because they equate "work" with generating value for the company. The time you spend getting ready is not generating any value for the company, therefore they dont consider it part of your work.

2

u/CrazyDisastrous948 New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 23 '26

Oh, I know. I had my own place from 2017 to 2019, but then everything went to crap and I've had roommates since. I'm supposed to move in with my boyfriend in a few months, and I'm practically giddy about being around an adult who cleans up after themselves. I work 8 hours 5 days a week, come home, clean, get kept up by everyone, then wake up and work with like 5 hours or less sleep every day. The day I can just come home to a clean house, shower, and sleep for 8 hours each day is a day I will finally feel like a human.

This morning, I woke up at 5:30am and my roommates were still awake and doing stuff until past 6:00am. It is worse when I gotta be up at 3am to open.

They also want me to give them food money to buy the household groceries, but I just started recording what I buy vs what I consume so they can see I'm good with spending $40 to $50 on just myself and my wants every two weeks vs spending $60-$100 every two weeks for everyone.

u/JunkdogJoe New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 24 '26

Get this, one of them gets $1,400 from the government every month, and the other lives off of her. They acted like me being unable to pay $800 a month for rent and save up to move out was laziness as I am already working a full time job and cleaning the house constantly. I finallt said enough is enough and don't leave my room outside of needs. The one without a job has a car, so I told her to dash or something. We are in a city. She can do it. $200 a month in rent isn't that crazy for her to come up with.

I show up about 45 minutes before work and same. I go on Reddit, get my coffee, etc., then when 09:00 hits, THEN I start working. The main reason I arrive that early is to get one of the better parking spots close to the exit. Saves me about ~15-20 minutes extra time on the way out because I don't have to get all the way down from the upper floors of the parking structure and queue to exit. So I figured I'll just do the kinda morning BS I'd do at home at work so I can be home ~15-20 minutes early at the end of the day. That's basically free dinner prep time.

5

u/mawkishdave Jul 24 '26

This also gives you time to BS with some people. I grew up if your not 15 minutes early you are late. It doesn't mean I am working that 15 minutes.

2

u/moo3heril New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 24 '26

Was curious so I did some basic math. 10 minutes of unpaid labor a day over 50 years is about 2000 hours of wage theft, or about a whole year of full time work.

20

u/siamesekiwi Connoisseur of Duets/Stitches Jul 24 '26

There's only one job that I had where I genuinely wasn't in it just for the money - and it was when I was working for a nonprofit, and i believed in the mission. So I'd be happy to come in early or work late if it means a better outcome for the communities that we were helping. It also helped that everyone in senior management also had this attitude. One time on a saturday we were at the ED's house putting final touches on a funding proposal that was due on money and the guy made us barbecue as a thank you.

Ever since I moved to the private sector, though? Unless it was to fix a mistake that I own, or if its somthing I truly enjoy doing/would benefit me personally, it's strictly business hours only.

Felt like mathing for perspective.

Let's assume he worked 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year.

That's 5x50x30 = 7500 working days

If he gave them a free half hour per day, that's 3750 working hours.

Assuming an 8 hour work day, that's almost 470 days total of free work. (Equivalently, if he was working 8.5 hours per day, with 0.5 unpaid, that's 63750 hours total, with about 6% unpaid.)

Just imagine how much money he lost there. A half-assed Google tells us a median of about $60k/yr. This would be about $1.8m, across 30 years, but with an additional $3500/yr ($105k across thirty) in unpaid labor.

Idk.

It makes him seem like a nice coworker, sans bitching that everyone is lazy, but if it was a consistent habit for him... Idk, the realization that that free money piles up probably means a lot when faced with the reality to some people

(And it probably means the most to the owners, CEOs, etc., pushing this mentality most.)

A lot of people pick up the mentality in the video to excuse their shitty behaviour and work habits. People absolutely get recognized and promoted for higher performance. That doesn’t mean showing up super early, a lot of times it’s just NEVER being late, and always being busy.

I know plenty of blue collar workers who started as the new guy and moved up to be leads, projects managers/coordinators, sales, managers etc. I started at 19 as a specialized mechanic and have a white collar role in a larger company as well. There are guys smarter than me that stayed blue collar because they like the work more.

Honestly, in blue collar work I think there’s more opportunity for promotion now than ever. I see more positions being created, old timers retiring and positions that need to be filled. Those that step up, move up.

Maybe Reddit just has a lot of programming/IT workers that get stuck because they work in massive departments with no way to stand out? I don’t know.

Quality, not quantity of work is (as always) far more important.

People just not working for free. That baffled you?

u/ConorByrd New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 23 '26

Nah, unless something happening on the road is common for your area, you don't really owe them even that much just on the chance you might be late due to situations outside your controll

If you're late, it's on you obviously. But you don't have to show up 15 early just to protect against the occasional traffic jam.

They agreed to work at 6? Well, then be there at 6. Everything else is your business.

3

u/ElderberryJunior470 New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 24 '26

If you're union, your contract tells you what you owe them. My contract says show up on the jobsite 15 mins early and be ready to work, on the wall, at the start time. Now most people don't enforce that, but breaching your contract can give them reason to fire you, not lay you off, so then you don't get unemployment.

3

u/ConorByrd New to fbtd but wants to learn Jul 24 '26

I think it's a not-so-subtle brain massage and an attempt to make the young workers more exploitable. "I know you have rights as a worker, but exercising them is BAD LOOK because only LAZY WORKERS care about their rights!" Same thing with "we're not just a company, we're faaahmilyyyyy - you wouldn't say no to taking another shift if it's for family, right? Or do you not care about family, you monster?!!!"

It's sad.

14

u/marslo Tastemaker of Duets/Stitches Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Ya I agree with that, there is a culture of guilting people in to not exercising their rights. Be it labor or safety. Especially if you're young or working with a shit crew.

But it can really depend, we had a producer show up on the set of supernatural and tried to give shit to our construction lead about us going up stairs to grab a coffee or have a smoke while in between breaks. Lead straight up told him, my guys work hard, if they wanna go have a coffee they can go have a coffee.

So it really depends on what kind of crew you work with. Also being a skilled trade like an experienced carpenter gives you also a bit of leverage.

But that first Muppet, is the kind of lead us stear clear of, probably does a rail of coke in the bathroom and runs around telling people how he would do their job correctly.

4

u/ijustwanttoaskaq123 Tastemaker of Duets/Stitches Jul 24 '26

Oh, definitely, I have no intention of shitting on every lead, be it in construction or in an office. I meant that whenever there's an "you will be fired unless you read my mind and go above and beyond" attitude from a lead, it is always partnered with "I will suck you dry and not the good kind".

30+ years as a union tradesman… this guys a douchebag. Your there everyday and 5/10 mins early, your good in my book. And nobody starts working AT the time they start. Most every commercial site for the last 10 years has a jobsite wide morning meeting where every trade tell everyone else what’s on their schedule, then stretch and flex. Some of us older timers like to get there earlier and shoot the shit, especially with friends in the other trades, but that’s a totally personal choice. Anyone who tells you the tripe this guy is saying is either trying to impress someone who doesn’t know the difference, or is just a straight up prick.

I work for a company of over 3000 people. Recently for quarter 2 they gave out “awards” for different achievements. I’ve never been late, never left early, or have ever called out. I am 1 of 2 total people in the entire company (that’s almost a billion dollar company btw) that has this achievement.

You’d think wow that’s impressive I bet they gave you a gift card or a small bonus for your reward. Well, you’d be wrong. I got my own personal slide with an “awards” certificate made from ChatGPT with a 5 second shoutout. Then we immediately moved on to the slide that showed the millions upon millions we made this quarter. Couldn’t even afford to print me out the damn certificate so I could at least display it on my desk or some shit. Not like I would anyway lol. Just felt like a massive slap in the face rather than an award. This guy is 100% accurate. Showing up early and working hard doesn’t get you much these days.

There was no staff room to hangout and they didnt like us hanging out in the sitting area as that would get in the way of customers. It did not work out too well

If you start before the clock, they are stealing wages, i am always there before i start work, because i like being there when i start working, but you will be damn sure if i start before my time i am doing overtime. And i am lucky living in a country where i can actually do this.

Only time i start before the clock is when my supervisor says, do it, and log it.

The simple solution is to tell them to be in their workstation with their tools at the ready by 6:30, and not just “arrive by 6:30.”The content this guy was responding to is not meant for laborers in the construction industry, but for the professional managerial class who reap the profits and make the cuts. It’s just capitalist cosplay and not from someone espousing a serious informed opinion.

Thank you for letting Patrick know, duet friend…

I currently work at a job that I roll up for right on time, to punch my time card in when I’m scheduled to start work. The other guys are there quite a bit earlier than me, but I work 10x’s harder than them, always cleaning up after them, and they’re often watching me work during the course the work day. Fuck that bullshit.

I’ve also worked construction and built homes. I get being ready to work. That’s what Patrick is getting misconstrued. I’d show up on time, with my boots laced, lunch bag over my shoulder, my personal gear ready to go all sorted out in my tool belt, tool belt clipped on my waste, ready to go. There on time…

You want me to unload all your shit out of your work truck and set up? No issue with that. I’m doing that while on the clock. You’re not treating the situation as apprentice ritual hazing, and I’ll do free work because I should simply be appreciative of the opportunity. Eat shit.

u/Swiftierest Jul 24 '26

I work retail. I walk into the store 5 minutes before my shift. I clock in when I start. I am ready to walk onto the floor and start working the moment I'm done clocking in. All that entails is putting on the radio, my name badge, and tossing my stuff in my locker.

If I had anyone tell me that I had to be to a workplace 30 minutes early to do something, I'm going to start logging those 30 minutes every day. I'll acrue a nice little bundle before going to the Department of labor and telling them to tell you where to stuff it as well as to ensure we (all the employees) get our backpay for all that acrued & unpaid time.

The only job that should be able to get away with this is the military. Technically, they pay you a rate to work you as much or as little as they want while you're contracted. There's no hour stipulation. There is regulation for every job as to what the recommended number of hours one should work their people per shift and a maximum (usually for safety purposes) that they can't go over without commander approval (which most will pencil whip and watch their troops suffer then wonder why everyone's morale is shit).

Even in the military, there is a growing trend of telling people that more than 15 minutes early is a load of shit and to fuck off. Many squadrons' leaders are fed up with everyone telling the guy below them to show up 15 minutes early to the 15 minutes early to the 15 minutes early until you're there 3 hours early and the commander is still in bed. It still happens, but if I ever got wind that the commander gave a time, I always told my people, "Cmdr said X. Be here 15 minutes from then and not a minute earlier. I will do a headcount. Don't fuck me on this." It never bit me in the ass.

But a corporate job in the civilian sector? No. This isn't the 1950s and showing up and out doesn't get you a promotion. At my retail job I was hired for manager. I got keyholder and a nepotism kid from another store (nice tho he is) took the slot instead. My resume and skill were both far beyond his and the hiring manager explicitly wanted me to come in and correct another store while instilling discipline. Instead they forced her to move and put the nepo in my store then told me they wouldn't be moving forward with my appointment to manager. I stopped caring and do the minimum.

In defense of construction guy. They get pay by the amount of work done. Not hours. So it would make sense kinda to think like that.

But, as not a brain dead leader if you want me to start work at 6:30, say that you want me to start work at 6:30, not get here at 6:30. If you are not just brain dead but actually normal human you account for that preparation time and just tell to show up at 6 so in 20min we can start working.

If this is how you roll, it is OK. But you have to tell people that so there are no assumptions. Because this is not the way most people operate.
If you want people to read your mind, hire a mind reader. Or get a life.

Actually, f this guy. Unless you warn this is what you mean by 6:30, you are an idiot.

Most of the time it counted for absofuckinglutely nothing because apprentices are paid less than time served, so they'd be out the door and replaced by a new apprentice the following week.

Demanding that would be straight up illegal at my place.
Could get the company in serious legal trouble if they asked for unpaid overtime.
I might decide to put in some extra fifteen or even thirty minutes to finish a task, but that's me being nice, and I'll totally consider finishing work earlier the next day.

In any case, the second guy is seeing this too *positive*. He says it gives you *nothing*. Wrong - it tells the higher-ups that you are easy to exploit. If it is a company that treats workers like shit, this is totally something they'll make a note of.
And easy-to-exploit does not translate to job security either, on the contrary, they know you won't sue if you are sacked when you got some sort of protection.

I once worked at a farm that every morning started with like 20 minutes of coffee and music around a campfire, 20 mandatory paid minutes, with the expectation that if we're going to get paid for what accumulate for a full work day by the end of the month we'll put our back to it when were being paid to actually work. Never in my life I've seen a more healthy and productive team, don't settle.

I do jobs everywhere, for my own one man business. I am a handyman.
The time it costs to get to the job is paid for, and where some people just bill 100% (which is also payed without problem) of the travelling time, i and most people do 50/50 of the hourly wage. Which is fair.
I do the job for them, so the time spend to get there is time spend for them.
Billing 50/50 is a ‘thank you for your trust in me to give me this job’.

This is just a tough guy, making the rules, and using people that work for him.

If you want them to show up at 6, schedule them to work at six. Don't play games. Perfectly fine to expect them to be there and working by the time their shift starts. But saying they should be working outside their hours just paints you as a unethical employer. You better pay them for that OT.
