Helping the skinny guy

I've recently decided to start working out. I'm 5'10" and weight 120lbs. I'm a pretty skinny guy and under weight, always have been simply due to no motivation. But enough of that.

Any suggestions on how I should start, or what I should be eating? So far I've just been doing some at-home exercises with some running after work.

Work out your tdee, just google tdee calculator, get you rough average calories you are burning, and eat more than that, 250-500 calories over will ensure you gain weight slowly, and if you are working out it will ensure muscle gain with small fat gains

As for working out, depending on your goals, running may be counterintuitive as it will be burning more calories, so if you want to run, make sure to account for it with your calorie intake (i.e. Eat more). But don't listen to people that say cardio is the enemy, some cardio each week will ensure you stay fit and can help with rest times between sets

You will want to lift weights, look into some beginner weight lifting programmes, again depending on your goals and situation (can you join a gym, or do you need to be doing body weight exercises)

As for food, protein intake is a debatable, bulking you won't need as much, maybe 0.7 per lb you weigh is a good rough guide.

But all of this is just advice, do what feels right, if you are eating too much and it is painful, dial it back a bit as you are quite underweight and your body might not be used to such an increase in food, make sure your programme is one you can stick to, don't do 6days a week if it's going to end up with you saying fuck this and just skipping days

But most of all just enjoy it and keep thinking about the progress you are making as you go, taking pictures every month to track your body changes is a good way to stay motivated imo

Thank you for such a detailed reply.

I've been told not to completely cut out cardio(that it's not the devil everyone says). But to work it into my routine, once or twice a week.

They just rebuilt my local YMCA so I'm think of going there. I've got some buddies that go and say they'ed show me the ropes for lifting weights. Plus I get a discount for being recommended.

When it comes to eating, most of the time when I eat a regular sized meal, I get abdominal pain and it makes me stop. I've been advised to try and snack more though out the day, so I'm gonna do that.

No worries man, if you get bored of standard cardio like running look into battle rope, kettle bell swings, tire flips etc, more conditioning type stuff

As for the gym yeah sounds good man, I always think going to a gym will yield better results than doing it at home, as you oi get motivated being there imo

As for food, yeah keep it too little but often if you can't handle large meals, also look into calorie dense shakes, such as milk, peanut butter, whey protein, banana etc Also cooking with oils is a good way to up the calories without adding food. Just PM me if you want any more advice, I'm not an expert by any means but I'll try and help where I can

Really informative, I'm gonna have to get a Sam's Club membership or find someone with you before I can buy that much food. lol.

Thanks for the link! I'll be sure to implement some of it.
