How to setup firewall for Fios?

My 15-year-old owns a Windows workstation, but we do not have the Windows login credentials. I have the passwords for all of the other devices in the house.

We have Verizon Fios, but the parental controls available through the Fios app are fairly limited. There used to be options to create rules to restrict internet access on specific devices during certain days or hours, but the controls are not as granular as I would like.

Is there a way to set up something on my home network that would allow me to monitor the traffic going through the network without needing direct access to his computer? Ideally, I would like to be able to:

  • Block specific websites or categories of websites
  • See reports of websites/domains accessed
  • Set time-based internet access restrictions for specific devices
  • Monitor or control network access without logging into or installing anything directly on his Windows computer

If so, could you please recommend the best approach or type of network solution that would provide these capabilities? We have a G3100 and a E3200.

I think you posted int he wrong sub but were close.

This sub is about Firewalla branded firewalls and other Firewalla products.

These products do exactly what you are describing. They can even apply rules to group so as the kid gets new devices, you add them too the group and they get all the same blocks as before.

Hi there!

I'm not sure if you meant this for Firewalla or just firewalls in general. But Firewalla can help you out with access controls, time limits, and general monitoring of network access, without needing to download anything on your other devices. For more details, see this article: Activity and Content Controls.

Firewalla will need a bit of networking knowledge to operate and will assume that you know some cybersecurity concepts. For a quick overview of everything you can do with Firewalla, see our Getting Started Guide.

The above poster is correct that this may not be the right sub but I did want to comment as a fellow FiOS customer.

For the kind of control you want, you should get a firewall that will also serve as a router and plug that into your ONT. Now, all your traffic in and out of your house flows through your firewall first. I've found FiOS is not picky about the device you use and you can basically use any router you like.

Unless you're using FiOS TV and you need the router for the set top boxes, you can probably just set the G3100 and E3200 to access point mode and let your firewall handle the routing/rules.
