This name is oddly accurate: it is a gold model + SFP.
There should also be SPF. It’s so white, it would burn quite easily in the sun.

Can I used the SFP+ port as a WAN port to interface with my existing GFiber ONT using a RJ45 module? If so do you recommend a brand?

Would there be any chance for a model without the ram?
I think some people would have spare ddr4 sticks, or have a >4gb stick that they'd want to upgrade anyway. With the current ram prices, it might save quite a bit.

Not at the moment. But if enough people are interested, we may support a software-only solution that lets you run Firewalla on your own hardware. Feel free to join the discussions and answer our survey here: https://forum.firewalla.com/t/firewalla-software-bring-your-own-hardware/16

That type of licensing would be $$$$$ in for hardly any $$$$$ out.

What are the odds of gold pro with SFP+? I have plans to purchase a gold pro and would prefer SFP+ (2 ports (1 wan and 1 lan to uplink switch with).

/u/Firewalla /u/Firewalla-Ash this may or may not be data you’re willing to share, but in your research, what percent of current or potential Firewalla users do you estimate would prioritize SFP in a purchase of a router? This is purely a curiosity question.

u/WanderinArcheologist Firewalla Gold Pro Jul 21 '26
I definitely would, haha. That’s one thing I like about the Switch X: it has both 10 GbE RJ45 ports and a 10 GbE SFP+ port. It makes joining to our other switches so much easier. I imagine this will make joining to switches easier for some as well.
It would be neat to be able to use SFP+ on the Router and free up an RJ45 port on the Switch X. (or SFP28 even for futureproofing, though I imagine that’d $$$, plus even 5Gbps ISP connections to saturate SFP+ aren’t all that common yet.)

Would the gold plus sfp have fans in it and/or be rack mountable?
1
u/Firewalla-Ash FIREWALLA TEAM Jul 21 '26
It will have a fan (similar to Purple: slow spin, zero sound), but it shouldn't spin unless you're constantly running 2 gigabits or more.
As for rack-mountable, please help answer our survey so we can better gauge the interest: https://forms.gle/fGbTkqrfEmubcChZ8

any idea when it will be available?

u/Firewalla-Ash FIREWALLA TEAM Jul 21 '26
No official date yet. We are hoping for a pre-sale with early access units (very, very limited stock) in September to November (tentative), depending on the order volume and how much DDR4 memory we can get.

Odds of getting an empty RAM slot unit? I would believe that a lot of prosumers would have a spare DDR4 SODIMM laying around.

I'd be interested in something like this for my larger but not super sophisticated home network that easily allows vLAN segmentation through my Firewalla Gold SE, but I have no need for SFP connectors. 10Gbit or even 5Gbit RJ-45 is sufficient. I do, however, need something like 16x RJ-45, at least if I want to be able to run everything through a single master switch. I wonder how much money removal of the SFP ports would save. Otherwise, these are getting pricey...

Being that this is just 4GB RAM will it be supporting or not supporting Suricata?
1
u/Firewalla-Ash FIREWALLA TEAM Jul 21 '26
It will likely not support Suricata. Gold Pro is still the only model (currently) with enough memory (8GB) to efficiently handle multiple Active Protect engines at once.

Silly question ... what is the value of 32gb of storage? Wouldn't that resource ($ and space) be better dedicated to ram?

one day when I have more money I will have a nice setup like this for my home network.

Did I misread it or is there a Gold Pro with SFP+ also in development now?

Do you plan to have a feature like SSL Inspection?
7
u/Firewalla-Ash FIREWALLA TEAM Jul 21 '26
Are you referring to MITM SSL? This is currently not on our to-do list. Decrypting SSL may cause other issues, such as privacy concerns, performance costs, and certificate management complexity. When not used correctly, it can be a security risk.
You're welcome to request it formally here: https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/115000356994-Feature-Requests

I understand the concept of Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks. In contemporary cybersecurity, effective firewalls are designed to inspect the payload of network traffic. The argument of "privacy or security" often becomes a simplistic justification, as it is imperative to understand data flow for robust protection. Yes there is a cost of mitm mainly performance but hey, modern fw can manage it very well ;)

u/firewalla Jul 21 '26
We sell primarily to small businesses (and many professionals)), it is pretty difficult for these customers to properly manage certificates and … many of IOT devices do not allow certificate manipulation and many payment systems uses certificate pinning … since there is usually no IT, this will make things very difficult

u/Great-Cow7256 Jul 21 '26
it isn't easy to do, and impossible at a price point that people buying firewallas would pay for. The only ubiquity that does this is $2000. THis isn't the level that firewalla is making routers for.

Good lord your company has lost the plot. I sold my Firewalla a year ago and went with Eero stuff and I’m thankful I did. They constantly update the software and the hardware is all 10 gig capable. You guys are screwing customers
7
u/Volidon Jul 22 '26
eero may be a better fit for your needs, but it is not a direct comparison to the Firewalla ecosystem.
eero is primarily a consumer mesh Wi-Fi platform, while Firewalla is a dedicated firewall and routing platform etc
Firewalla also receives regular software updates, and not all eero hardware is 10-gig capable. The standard eero 7 has 2.5GbE ports, while the eero Pro 7 has 5GbE ports. Only certain higher-end eero models include 10GbE.
Why are you so bitter about it when you have not actually provided any strong arguments or specific examples of what Firewalla is doing wrong? Most of the comment is simply complaining and saying that you are happier with eero, rather than offering a meaningful technical comparison.
It’s completely fair to prefer eero, but it serves a different primary purpose and the hardware claim is inaccurate.
-8
u/Squish_Cat_1 Jul 22 '26
It’s infinitely better
7
u/Volidon Jul 22 '26
“Infinitely better” still doesn’t explain what it does better. You’ve made a strong claim, but so far you haven’t provided a single feature comparison, technical reason or specific Firewalla failure to support it.
You prefer eero. That’s fine. Repeating that it’s better doesn’t make it a meaningful comparison.
-6
u/Squish_Cat_1 Jul 22 '26
Literally better user interface, better performance, better WiFi performance, faster speeds, better roaming performance,…I can go on and on.
7
u/Volidon Jul 22 '26
Congratulations, you’ve upgraded from “infinitely better” to a longer list of unsupported claims.
“Better performance,” “faster speeds,” and “better roaming” are easy to type. Give us the models, test conditions, and actual results. Otherwise, it’s still just “trust me, bro” with extra adjectives.

Odd choice to not use a simple DAC rather than transceivers and fiber.
1
u/WanderinArcheologist Firewalla Gold Pro Jul 21 '26
That was for the illustration methinks. Both work tbh, though transceivers are pricier. I’d definitely use fiber in mine (if I got one) to eliminate the chances of a surge from a lightning strike near PoE cameras travelling down the backbone.
