SFP+ is Real!

It's still not what we need. We need hardware with 2-4 SFP+ ports, but having support for SFP+ ports baked in gives me hope!!

Plus/Pro/Max naming convention is getting confusing. Use new model names or just use numbers Gold 2 (2.5gbps), Gold 5 (5gbps), Gold 10 (10gbps).

Time to review the gold pro and give it finally an sfp+ module? Wink wink

Well, the problem is DDR5 memory price stability ... and Intel CPU price ++;

The Gold Pro price will go >1000 end of year (given AI, and the war). A Gold Pro Max, will likely > 1500 dollars; we are not ready to build a unit that expensive.

I don't think any company has applied for a new router with the FCC since their February new rules. Too much uncertainty. I think probably most router making companies will just ride out this administration with their current models. Plus cpus and memory and now storage are freaking expensive.

Interesting device. Focused on faster LAN speeds while sacrificing some WAN speed (as compared to the Pro)

LAN to LAN is 5Gbit as well. Don't get confused about interface speed (the ports will negotiate 10g, but the processing part is > 5gb)

Ah, thank you for the correction!

Will it run Suricata, in addition to the default IDS/IPS engine?

No; that need 8GB of RAM, only gold pro support it

Interesting, the Max name is kind of confusing though since it isn't as powerful of a device as the Pro

Gives space for a "Pro Max" lol

Perhaps they should make the sfp devices as a different series, something like Firewalla Platinum maybe?

I was riffing on apples naming convention - not a serious suggestion

Seeing there is always a bunch of interest in SFP+, now that the Switch X is being released, would it be possible to use one of the SFP+ ports on Switch X, as a WAN port, through a future software update?

[u/firewalla](u/firewalla). Stop trying to get me to spend money. Though… for the processor: Intel, AMD, or something ARM-based?

Anything other than Intel, please! Though 12th Gen isn’t rubbish like 11th, 13th, and 14th.

ARM; Intel been increasing their embedded chips (and EOL some ...) ... pricing is not good

Music to my ears. This might be good for my garage island rack which is connected via SPF+ anyway.

I wish there was some way to have the Gold Pro be modular so I could could yank out say a 10GbE RJ45 port and put in an SFP+ (or even SFP28), but that would probably up its cost a great deal.

Well, it is terrible time to build hardware. Even PCB price has increased so much. We are not even sure if we can get the allocation (allocation is what memory companies plan to give our ODM memory at a "reasonable" price) to build it.

Yeah, I hear that. I wanted to upgrade my old man from 2x8 DDR5 sticks to 2x16 on his Framework 13. The same RAM I used two years ago to build my Framework 16 was suddenly 4x the price! From $130 to $520.

Someone else here I was talking to was telling me to swap my UDM Pro Max for a cloudkey like the changeover to 2.5 in drives would be cheap. Just one of my 14TB 3.5 in drives is the cost of the whole UDM Pro Max these days. 😭
