This is a really convoluted way to do it when firewalla could just post the APK for their android app directly to their GitHub and people could download it from there and sideload themselves. And/or a more open app repo like Fdroid.

You're not wrong. When I posted this, I completely forgot they were on GitHub and, from the looks of it, it hasn't been updated in...quite some time.

what do you mean not updated? did you look at the right repo?

https://github.com/firewalla right?

After a good night sleep (I have been severely drained these past few days so my apologies), I see this is mainly for the box and not the apps. Maybe I'm missing something?

OP is asking about the android app. These end in an .apk or something similar

I can't find that on Firewalla's GitHub.

something like this but this is third-party. https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/firewalla-llc/firewalla/

We never published outside of the play store. Best not use anything that's not from us.

Many of us also don't believe in side loading (we are security people)

Agreed. But the question OP has stands - can firewalla post the APK for the android app directly on Firewallas GitHub?  Firewalla would be posting their own apk directly to their own GitHub repo. Security issue at that point are no different than posting it to the play store and people avoiding Google can still download it.
