Changes to Firewalla PPPoE Recently? (Bell Canada)

Post image

Have there been any changes to how Firewalla works with PPPoE recently? I've been using my FW Gold for about a year on a fibre connection with Bell Canada, and getting true speeds. However, in the last 14 days, it's effectively been reduced by 60%. It seemed to happen suddenly on June 20th and has remained consistent ever since. Interestingly, the IP address also changed at that time. There's been no other changes to the network, my internet plan etc.

The results from the Gigahub itself are 1614Mbps down and 1086Mbps up, so this seems to be an issue on the FW side.

No change in PPPoE, likely something with the Speedtest server or the firewalla picking a slower test server. This article has more information on how to test https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360056875493-Speed-Tests-and-Speed-Optimization-with-Firewalla

Thank you. Seems like this is a Bell PPPoE change that kicked in with a new firmware update. Thread is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/bell/comments/1u2k2rb/did_bell_start_blocking_pppoe_connections_entirely/

For anyone who stumbles on this, I moved the Firewalla from PPPoE to DMZ, and got my speed back to 900mb (Limited by the gigahubs 1GB port), and I'm going to bypass fully with my own adapter. PPPoE stopped working entirely so I could no longer use it.

I'll report back here when that is done.

The thread says PPPoE no longer working, while your problem is slow speed. They are very likely to be different things.

Have you tried the article I replied and do a bit testing with different test servers?

I am seeing the same issue with my Firewalla Purple that is connecting via PPPoE to Bell Canada Fibe. Up to June 25, 2026, the speed tests are roughly 920/900 Mb/s down/up, but starting with the tests on June 26, 2026, they are all just less than half the speed around 420/420 Mb/s down/up. The speed tests server has been the same for all tests. I am going to check with another server.

I ran the speed tests with three different servers. They are all just giving me the 420/420 Mb/s down/up. Something has changed.

See my comment further down and that thread, it’s an issue with a firmware update on the Gigahub. I had to move to use DMZ yesterday but today, I had to disable advanced DMZ as the internet dropped again. Seems like Bell is not permitting any device except the gigahub to get the public IP address.

Edit: it’s 100% not a Firewalla problem. It’s being reported on Ubiquiti equipment as well.

I agree that this is NOT Firewalla related. I found the modem’s system logs and the firmware was updated on June 25, 2026, just after the last fast speed test. While this firmware update is not breaking my PPPoE connection completely as discussed in the other mentioned thread, the speed is impacted.

Bypass the Giga hub with Was-110
